Poker Players Speak a Funny Language
Poker players use language that could be confusing. A novice to poker might get confused when sitting down to a table of seasoned poker players. This happens because poker players use words that might make no sense at all.
To follow along during a poker game, the speech needs to be explored. At the beginning of all variations of poker, the players ante. An ante is a small amount of money that is bet before the cards are dealt.
A small blind and a big blind are used in some versions of poker. These blinds are forced bets for the person sitting the left of the dealer and the next person going clockwise. If the player decides his hand is good enough to win, he will ante which is the same amount as the big blind.
Cards that are dealt to all the players are placed in the middle of the table are shared to make the hands in community types of poker. Using the two hole cards, the two face down cards that were dealt in the beginning, and the window cards, the player tries to create a winning hand. These are predetermined winning sets of five cards that are ranked from highest to lowest, such as a full house or a pair.
The community cards are placed on the table and called the window cards. The first three cards dealt face up are called the flop. The next two cards are called the turn and the river respectively.
Once the two hole cards are dealt, the players then either bet or fold. The player who hands his or her cards to the dealer and waits for the next round is someone who folded. This happens when the player feels like their two hole cards will not make any good hands.
The player to the left of the dealer is the person who places the small blind. A dealer button is passed around to the players to show who will be the next person, in the next round, to place the small blind. The button travels clockwise around the table.
After the players have anted, the dealer then turns the flop out face up. Depending upon what is in the hole and the flop, the players then bet again. The person who has that round’s dealer button bets first if they feel like those five cards will give them the win.
Calling, raising or folding is what the other players must do. The player simply bets the same amount of the bet when they call a bet. The player bets the same amount as the initial bet but adds more when they are raising the bet.
Once all the window cards are down, the flop, the turn and the river, the last of the betting occurs. If there is more than one player still playing a showdown happens. This is when the remaining players show their hole cards to reveal what hand they have.
The person with the higher-ranking hand wins. The ranking of poker is a high card, a pair, two pairs, three of a kind, a flush, a straight, a full house, four of a kind and a straight flush respectively. The winner with the highest-ranking hand wins the pot and the game begins again.
