I want you to know right now that you are not in the speaking business! You are in the business of marketing your speaking services. Your talent or message will only take you so far but when you learn to become a top-notch marketer, your public speaking business will literally explode!

I would see mediocre speakers get public speaking jobs that even I couldn’t obtain early on in my motivational speaking career. Even worse, these speakers would get job after job while I didn’t. I had a friend who was a great speaker, yet he didn’t last too long. One reason was he couldn’t figure out how to get bookings for motivational speaking and was not making enough money to support his family. It made me wonder what these guys were doing that we weren’t. Now I understand that today I make a ton of money in my public speaking career not because I’m a great speaker but because I’m a great marketer. Below are some tips to help you do the same.

1) Instead of filling your ego, fill your bank account – that is the first thing you should remember when you’re starting your public speaking business. Instead of focusing on fame and stardom, have the mindset you need to go after jobs that put money in your pocket. If you do enough speaking engagements and seminars, fame and stardom is inevitable in your professional speaking career, believe me.

2) Teach people how to give you money. Conference planners and hosts don’t always know what you want or need. Their whole goal is to put on an amazing conference or seminar and I can guarantee you that they aren’t focused on putting money in your pocket. For that very reason, teach people how to give you money. Pre-sell your book and show the conference planner how they can give the book for free by including the price of it in the registration fee. Learn to offer pre-sell merchandise and back of the room merchandise. Never be afraid to go after the big money.

3) It’s just that one idea that makes all the difference. Know that one idea is all you really need to get started to making money with your professional speaking career. Help you generate the ideas you need and then be prepared to take action on them by doing different things.

4) You should never stop learning. In fact I will help you learn multiple proven, contested formulas that will attract continuous and unlimited wealth so that you can live stress free and live exactly how you want to live each and every day. You need to not only work right, but you need to work smart. You need to learn to use strategies that work instead of trying to work those get-rich-quick schemes that end disastrously.

5) Market. Market. Market. If no one knows you, they can’t give you a motivational speaking job. As simplistic as this concept sounds, I often find people who claim to never advertise or dip into vain self-promotion. I don’t think self-promotion is vain. In fact, I think not marketing yourself is the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot.
