The Many Lives of Edward Bear aka Winnie

by Steve Collins

If you came of age watching Disney, there is a high probability watching Winnie the Pooh was a major part of it. Disney has crafted Winnie the Pooh into one of its most popular features, with many different direct-to-video featurettes, an animated television series as well as three feature length films. Children and adults alike have enjoyed such fare as The Tigger Movie, Piglet’s Big Move and Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, but you may not be aware of the rich history behind them, and the person responsible for it all.

Winnie the Pooh was the doing of British author A. A. Milne. Named after the stuffed teddy bear owned by his son, Christopher Robin Milne, Pooh’s actual name was Edward Bear. The first chapter of what would one day be the first book of Pooh was commissioned by the London’s Evening News for its December issue in 1925. At the time, Milne was already a prolific writer who had succeeded in creating several notable works. He was a playwright, a poet, and a novelist and his subsequent fame regarding the Pooh stories would always be a source of irritation to him.

The actual Pooh, owned by Christopher Robin Milne, was named after a bear named Winnipeg that roomed at the London Zoo, and Pooh, a swan that they had encountered over the holidays. The first tale that mentions Pooh, titled When We Were Very Young, explains that Pooh’s arms were so stiff that he could not use them to swat away flies; instead he needed to blow them away, resulting in the ?pooh? sound and his subsequent nickname.

The Hundred Acre Wood that appears prominently in the Winnie the Pooh books is most likely based on Ashdown Forest in East Sussex England. This was where Milne lived and his son grew up, and the name of the forest itself is much like that of the Five Hundred Acre Wood, which is close to Ashdown Forest.

The first Winnie the Pooh book was published in 1925 and was titled simply Winnie the Pooh. This book introduces many of the characters filmgoers are now familiar with, including the toy animals of Pooh, Piglet, and Eeyore, as well as the live animals of Owl and Rabbit. Latter in the Pooh adventure, Kanga, a mother toy kangaroo and her baby Roo are introduced as well. While most of the stories are original, some had been previously published in the Evening News and some poetry works. Tigger would not be introduced until the second book, House at Pooh Corner.

There a wealth of trivia to learn about Winnie the Pooh, and the animated features are just the tip of the ice berg. Take a look and see what other sources of Pooh lore you can learn!

Before we start, lets take a look at the different types of singing

There’re basically 2 ways that most people sing, the natural way and the normal way. The natural way of singing is beautiful in the voice of the masters and it is defined as singing that is completely free from any deliberate physical or mental effort. The normal way, which most people use, may be defined as the way singing ought to be done to reach certain goals or objectives.

DON’Ts:

1. Don’t have too much to drink before you go up on the stage to sing your karaoke songs. One very big reason for this is because drunk people tend to trip on cords and fall off the stage. They also slur the words to people’s favorite songs. As a result, their show leaves much to be desired. Save some of the drinks to celebrate AFTER you have put on a fantastic show.

2. Don’t eat or drink milk, cream, dairy products, chocolate, or mixed drinks with any of these things in them. They coat the throat and produce phlegm, which makes it most difficult for you to sing your karaoke songs.

3. Don’t read your karaoke song from the screen. This makes for a really boring show.

4. Don’t scream into the microphone, or strain to reach the notes. Your karaoke songs will sound terrible, and you will likely damage your vocal chords.

5. Don’t take it too seriously. After all, you’re here to have FUN!

That’s all there is to it! A night of singing karaoke songs is meant to be fun and relaxing. Remember these tips to enhance your experience, and you will surely have a great time.

DOs:

1. Choose a song that’s right for your voice. Know your limitations.

2. Choose a song that means something to you, carries special memories for you, and that you feel passionate about.

3. Know the words and music.

4. Drink water before each song to hydrate your vocal chords. Your karaoke songs will sound better, fuller, and stronger.

5. When you walk up onto the stage, exude confidence! The audience will be filled with anticipation of what’s to come.

6. Take control of the stage. Make eye contact with the audience. Pick out someone in the audience every so often to make eye contact with, and smile right at them. Include them. Reel them in.

7. Make the song yours! It’s your karaoke song; it’s your show; so put on a great show. Sing from the heart. Let the audience feel your emotion.

8. Move with the song. Move during the instrumental breaks. Think energy!

9. When you’re done with your karaoke songs, take a bow and thank the audience. This always leaves a great impression.

10. Have FUN!

Guitar Self Tuning

by Paul Green

Whether you are playing a show or just practicing, you should tune your acoustic guitar every time you play. Playing an out of tune guitar is not fun. Beginners can become frustrated with learning because they do not understand the importance of acoustic guitar tuning. The few extra minutes it takes to tune your guitar is always worth it.

It’s best to use an electronic tuner for acoustic guitar tuning. Sit down with the electronic tuner on a nearby table or stool. Turn it on and strum the first string. The tuner will sense which string is being tuned using its built in microphone. The indicator will show you how close you are to the correct pitch. It will also show you whether you are sharp or flat. Turn the tuning key and tweak the string until your tuner shows that you’re in tune.

Keep in mind that one always tunes up, which means going from looser to tighter till it’s in tune. If it becomes too tight, don’t just unwind it a little bit to try to improve it (called “tuning down”). It works far better to give the string some play and then start tightening it again till it’s right. When you tune up, not only are your results more accurate, but you also help the string hold its tuning longer.

A reference pitch source is needed whether or not you want to use an electric tuner when learning how to tune your guitar. Some options as to other things you can use are a tuning fork, another in tune guitar, a piano, or an MP3 that you know is in tune. Your results will always be accurate if you use an electric tuner when acoustic guitar tuning. If you’d like to try it the old fashioned way, an electric tuner will be helpful if you’d like to check your results.

The sixth, or E string is the place to start acoustic guitar tuning. Be sure to tune it to the reference pitch, and after you have it tuned, the other five strings can be tuned to that note. Simply follow the tune. There is a lengthy reason for how and why this works, but it’s not necessary to know how a car works to drive it. Under that same theory, extensive musical knowledge isn’t required in order to perform acoustic guitar tuning.

Then proceed with your acoustic guitar tuning as follows: 1. After verifying the guitar is in tune, play it on the fifth fret. Use that as a basis to tune the open fifth string. 2. Using the fifth string as a guideline, play the fifth fret on that to tune your fourth string. 3. Use the fifth fret on the fourth string to tune the third. 4. Pay close attention here, because there’s a bit of a change. The third string should be played using the fourth fret to tune the open second string. 5. Changing it up again- return to playing the fifth fret, only using the second string this time, to tune the first string.

If you’re just starting out with acoustic guitar tuning, you may want to ask someone at the music store when you purchased your guitar to show you how to do acoustic guitar tuning the proper way. Then just keep practicing until you’re comfortable with the process. It takes time and practice to learn to do acoustic guitar tuning, especially by ear. For the novice, the simplest way to perform acoustic guitar tuning is with the use of an electronic tuner. You can find one for around $20 and you will definitely get your money’s worth. An electronic tuner that is made specifically for tuning guitars has the ability to recognize which string is being played.

The Secret Influence of Blues Guitar On Popular Music

by Zack Roberts

Here is an old line from one of the famous blues songs and it says, “the blues had a baby…and they called it rock n’ roll.”

Let me tell you, there is so much truth to that line! You can listen to all the first rock n’ roll songs and discover the blues guitar riffs, chord progressions and scales being played, just in a less bluesy kinda way.

“Johnny B. Good” is a key example of a blues guitar progression being played with a rock drum beat and a vocal melody that is unusual from how a blues vocal melody would sound. It doesn’t finish there though. The influence on modern music is nonetheless very prevalent. We hear it in hip-hop, rock, emo, indie, reggae, r & b, funk, etc

The commonly used 1 - 4 - 5 chord progression (3 chords) that is used in blues is also used in almost EVERY type of music that exists. Even Beethovan uses this chord progression as well as many others from the classical period. Not only do blues guitar riffs and chord progressions gets played in modern music, but virtually all guitar solos also have blues overtones in country music as well as the other styles that I mentioned. It has been a Essential component in organizing the shape sound of modern music no matter how you look at it.

Mastering how to play blues music should be a top priority on any guitar players ‘to-do’ list. Once you learn the ins and outs of this genre, you can improvise it to create your own modern songs, riffs and/or solos. Many guitar players that I know improvise on the blues scale to produce their main riffs and super spectacular leads as well as use the chord progressions to write different, more modern music.

Don’t let anybody convince you that the blues is dead!

Understanding point spreads

by Simon M Skinner

Every major sport that people bet on has a point spread system.

People who are new to betting and college football spreads may not necessarily know what these numbers mean. Point spreads are interesting because many sports analysts will talk about these point spreads on television, although there are limited areas in the US where you are allowed to gamble.

If you want to add a little spice to your understanding of the game and to your betting enjoyment then a good understanding of point spreads will certainly help.

If you understand sports betting in general then you will be able to grasp the concept of point spreads more easily. All major sports have some form of point spread. Point spreads change regularly as they are determinged on a game by game basis.

For example, if the University of Oklahoma is playing the University of Texas then there is going to be a point spread associated with the game.

The two teams are rarely exactly matched in skill, so you are going to find that one will have a better chance of winning the game. In college football spreads this can be a very large number depending on who the two teams are.

In a game between OU and UT, then the spread is going to be lower because the teams are relatively close to each other in terms of skill and competition level.

Because it is often obvious that there is one team that is much better than another, there is the point spread. If you were allowed to simply bet on the better team, then 50% of the time all bettors will win. The point spread means that the team has to win the game by a certain number of points.

For example, if OU is favored by 7 over UT, then they will have to win by 8. If they win by 7 then it is considered a push. You would neither win nor lose your money if they won by 7.

How Piano Software Works

by Leo Prenev

Everybody loves to listen to music. Music is a part of our life, our way of being, and it makes up a great deal of human emotion. As people get older, they may begin to develop an interest in a particular instrument, such as that of the piano and its melodious music.

If you crave music, you can get it almost in an instant. Today’s internet world has seen a rapid growth and because of this fact, the music industry has seen a number of major changes within a short period of time.

Piano software is available online for those of you who wish to learn the instrument. You can download instructional videos, music lessons, and much more, all at the touch of a button.

Piano software varies a good deal, even for beginners. Some companies will ship you a box set of DVDs to learn from, while others will allow you to download a learning based package to your computer. Popular items may be “learn to tell notes” or “metronome” devices.

Piano software typically includes tools that will help the novice user get up off the ground to a running start. Lessons may include play-alongs, or sing-alongs. Flash is a normal component to use in software based learning suites.

The piano software teaches the user step by step instructions gradually introducing him or her to the basic aspects of the piano, the different parts, and the key notes etc.

The newer styles of piano software contain a virtual piano which is kind of fun for the beginner. They allow you to click on the piano keys with your mouse, and hear the corresponding sound that the note should play. This is a great way to get your ears in tune with how the sound and visuals should work.
