When faced with having to make a speech and you have little or no experience of speaking in public, it is inevitable that you will want to pick up as many tips on speech building and presentation as you can. In fact, if you could only discover those hints and tips that were able to convey some sort of ‘magic furmula’ you would be overjoyed!

In reality, however, your search for this magic formula is likely to be a long one.

No matter how much thought a person might put into their speech preparation, there are three mistaken assumptions that will make their public speaking task all the more difficult.

Assumption No.1:

That in order for your speech to be successful, you will need to overcome the natural hostility of your audience before you can begin to relax.

In fact, the opposite is true. Your audience actually wants you to make a successful speech. Human nature dictates that our natural empathy with a Fellow Being means that we will feel another person’s discomfort when we witness it. If you are experiencing embarrassment, nervousness or unease whilst addressing your audience, then they will be sharing in that experience too.

No audience wants to feel bad on your behalf, so instead of being hostile towards you, they are actually willing you to make a really good and confident speech.

Assumption No.2:

That one of the biggest tips when building your speech is that you absloutely must include jokes or funny stories, otherwise your audience will not enjoy your presentation.

Wrong - although this supposed pearl of wisdom will appear on just about every list of public speaking tips you might uncover. The success of a speech certainly does not depend on it being peppered with jokes and stories.

After all, if you were an absolute ace at telling jokes and stories, you’d be a professional comedian, right? But most of us have great difficulty in even remembering a punchline, let alone be able to deliver it with style, so why make delivering your speech even more stressful than it already is by trying to carry off three or four ‘funny’ stories just for their own sake?

Assumption No.3:

That you need to be an expert on the topic you are speaking about or your audience will boo you off the stage

Again, this is a commonly held but completely erronious belief and is completely incorrect. In fact, you really don’t need to know much about your topic and still be able to deliver a really good and entertaining speech.

What is vital to know, however, is how to research your topic well, so that you are able to discover the best and most relevant material possible for your audience’s delight. If you can master this skill - and it is simply a matter of learning the correct research technique - you will soon be able to construct a speech on any topic and for any audience easily, successfully and for time after time.

So, before you begin your search for a list of ‘magic’ tips on public speaking, make sure you get rid of these three, completely misleading speech-making assumptions.

Remind yourself that your audience isn’t hostile towards you - they actively want you to succeed and deliver the best and most entertaining speech they have ever heard. After all, they want to feel good on your behalf - not bad.

Secondly, that there is no absolute requirement that you need to include jokes and stories in your speech. Unless you really do feel at ease telling anecdotes and can deliver punchlines faultlessly, don’t put yourself under extra stress trying to be a comedian as well as a speech-maker.

And finally, don’t become despondent believing that you need to be an expert on the subject you are to speak about. Your sole duty is to make your speech well and confidently. If you do this, your audience will naturally accept that you know your subject well. You can achieve this by thoroughly preparing and executing your research before actually writing your speech - a much more achievable task than attaining true, expert status, wouldn’t you agree?

So, when looking for tips on public speaking, first rid yourself of these three, common misconceptions and you will have already made good headway towards your goal of delivering a successful, entertaining and informative speech for your audience.

Over the past decade, a good many people ask me how to get into cartooning, or some similar artistic endeavor, especially if, like me, art is not their strongest skill. Before I entered “the trade”, I too, was curious about how a number seemed to “sneak in” these so called “glamor-fields” and many couldn’t even draw a straight line.

Yves St. Laurent, also not an artist, never drew one of his designs and was the only major designer not to do so, yet remains a household word even after retirement. Walt Disney was a fair artist but knew others were better so farmed that out. Disney was also so broke when he conceived his Magic Kingdom idea, he couldn’t even afford art supplies, but he could afford paper clips and “molded Mickey, Donald, Goofy and the gang out of them.

Obstacles and disappointments will become your “friends”. Unless you won the lottery or your uncle as rich as Bill Gates left you the entire empire, you are going to be relying on your own resourcefulness, blood, sweat, tears, and surrounding yourself with talents bigger than yours, who believe in your vision. Disney had a disdain for bankers and wrote about it often. I can see his side of the story, but on the other hand, can see the banker’s point of view.

If a man walked into my bank off the street asking for a couple million to launch a Magic Kingdom run by a mouse named “Mickey” I might have thought twice as well. The reality is, unless very well-established, art projects and banking do not mix very well. This is just a sad reality, and blood, sweat, and tears, are more often than not your financiers.

There is no one correct one path in entering cartooning or any other artistic field. There are some “good weaponry of preparedness” that might help see you through it. Of course education is number one, either from an institution or books. Though it seems formal education is the better instructor, I have seen successful people get it from books. Find a mentor or mentors and get as much information as possible. Don’t know someone who has been in the field? Google names of famous people in your field. You would be surprised how many of the biggest of the big, are the friendliest and most helpful.

The bottom line is this. You may not become “an overnight success”. It surely did not happen to me. I can’t even begin to list all the obstacles, challenges, learning experiences, strange jobs I had to hold, etc. to keep me, and Londons Times Cartoons afloat while in the learning process. I can look back a decade, and decidedly say, “It was not only worth it, I would do it again in a a split second.

Did you know that a piano can have up to 12,000 moving parts? It’s true. Not only that, but many of those parts are moving parts. And if you want your piano to stay in good working order, it needs a little bit of maintenance to stay its best.

During your first year of piano ownership you’ll probably want to get your piano serviced two to four times. I know that sounds like a lot, but keep in mind that a piano is an investment. This includes having it tuned, regulated, voiced, and getting worn parts replaced or repaired.

Tuning is the adjustment of the piano’s strings. There are over 200 strings in a piano. The piano tuner technician will adjust the strings so they are at the correct pitch. This is ensures the notes will sound in harmony when musical intervals are played.

How does a piano go out of tune in the first place? The most common cause is humidity changes. It’s recommended that you don’t get your piano tuned right after the humidity has changed or the tune will only hold a couple months.

Regulation is the adjustment of the mechanical aspects of the pianos because the cloth parts compact and settle, and the piano changes dimension somewhat due to changes in humidity. Uneven keys and keys that stick are signs that a piano needs to be regulated. The frequency of regulation needed for a piano varies according to how much the piano is used along with the climate it’s kept in.

Voicing a piano is an adjustment of the tone of your piano. As you use your piano, hammers wear and compact and some notes will become too harsh. At this point, your piano needs to be voiced. Most people find that their piano needs to be voiced every 1-5 years, depending on how much use your piano receives.

Of course there’s more to piano care than just the inner guts of the piano. There’s an exterior of your piano and it requires a bit of care too. Most people can handle keeping their piano clean, but one thing to remember is that using furniture polish on a good piano is a big no no.

A piano will also need periodic reconditioning by the piano technician which is cleaning, making any needed repairs, and replacing specific parts if needed. When your piano technician comes over to work on your piano, it’s a good time for you to dust the hard to reach areas of the piano such as the behind the lower panel where the pedals are.

If your piano has deteriorated severely then reconditioning it won’t be enough. You’ll have to get the piano completely rebuilt which involves completely disassembling the piano. As you might imagine it’s very labor intensive and quite expensive, but in some cases it’s the only way to restore the original performance level of your piano.

A piano is an investment. (not a gigantic paperweight that needs dusting.) If you properly maintain your piano, not only can it provide a lifetime of music and enjoyment, but it can actually increase in value.
