Many speakers, when first starting out on their public speaking careers, feel very exposed and self-conscious when on stage. Probably, you can recall feeling the same at some point. And one of the most vexing problems speakers experience is just what to do with their hands that feels natural and unforced.

Standing in front of a room full of people, all of whom are eagerly anticipating the start of your speech, just serves to magnify the problem of what to do with your hands.

Is it acceptable to put your hands in your pockets? Or would it look odd just leaving them to hang limply by your sides? Or should you fling them wildly about in the belief that ‘grand gestures’ look natural from the audiences’ point of view?

And the more conscious you become of what to do with your hands, the more your focus will be diverted away from your speech and the more your nerves will begin to get the better of you.

Try making use of these tips and in no time at all you’ll have forgotten all about your hands and be able to get on with the real job of delivering a truly excellent and enjoyable speech.

Learn to relax. The real truth is that you only begin to focus on what to do with your hands when you are feeling particularly stressed. In your normal, day-to-day life you don’t worry about what your hands are doing as you speak to you family, colleagues and friends, do you? And the reason for that is purely because you feel at ease with the situation and do not experience nervousness at all.

Take a particular note of whether you usually use hand gestures to illustrate what you are saying at all other times. Try and relate to a friend how to tie a tie or describe a spiral staircase and see just how you use your hands to help enhance your words.

If you find that the use of hand gestures comes naturally to you, then continue to use them when making your speech. If you do what you always do, you’ll find that it won’t feel artificial or forced.

In general, if you don’t gesture naturally, then don’t try to start!

It’s a safe bet that if you feel at all nervous, your emotion may be unconsciously demonstrated by what your hands are doing. Are you repeatedly putting your hands in and out of your pockets, clenching your fists or clutching your notes tightly?

Realize that finger pointing, desk banging and fist clenching gestures will convey negative or hostile overtones – maybe even be insulting to those belonging to certain cultures. Avoid these at all costs!

Be sure to limit your gestures during your presentation or you will appear to be windmilling your way through your speech.

If you find that you really feel uncomfortable about how to use your hands during your speech, try spending some time learning some helpful relaxation techniques and practising the use of different hand gestures in front of a mirror. If you think that your hands look natural and unobtrusive, then so will your audience.

Always bear in mind the physical nature of these actions and understand that they simply form another part of your communication with your audience.

Once you begin to understand how the use of gestures can naturally enhance and lend support to your words, you will begin to find that you are no longer thinking and worrying about what your hands are doing. Instead you will pleasantly surprised discover that you are using your gestures naturally and without giving them a second thought.

When you can do this, you can congratulate yourself on graduating to the next level of expertise in public speaking!

When you are just starting out with belly dancing you will want to find some good belly dancing music to practice your moods. You don’t need to find authentic belly dancing music to put your moves into use. If you are just practicing at home use whatever music you enjoy.

The one thing that you should make sure of when you are selecting your belly dancing music is whether you like it. Only if you become serious in your pursuit of belly dancing will you need to explore more authentic music.

Variety Tapes

You should be able to find a variety of tapes and CD’s that are being sold as belly dancing music. If you are just playing around with belly dancing then this sort of music will be fine. This type of music is typically a combination of Middle Eastern music with some western influences. This is a perfectly appropriate way to become familiar with the more traditional belly dancing music.

It is also fine to use music that has nothing to do with belly dancing. If you are performing your routines for your friends and family the choice of music is not that important. What are important are the rhythm and the beat of the music. As long as it is appropriate for your routine then you should use it. Latin music is particularly pleasing for belly dancing.

The Real Music

If you are looking for some authentic music then you should probably find someone who is familiar with belly dancing and the music that goes with it. The perfect person to ask is a belly dancing instructor. There are different styles of music, just as there are different styles of dance. When going for authenticity try to match the style of the music with the style of the dance moves.

Learning all the different styles of dance is a great way to find the right styles of music. As you become more intimately familiar with them, you will learn to recognize the music. If authenticity is not your main concern then feel free to try one of the many compilation CD’s available.
