Before you get your hands busy with mining, you might want to look at the following needs:
1) Mining Skill. You can get this by going to your local mining trainer and getting trained.
The following is a list of mining trainers and their locations:
Gelman Stonehand: Stormwind, western end of Dwarven District. (Alliance Trainer)
Kurdram Stonehammer: Darkshore, north Auberdine area. (Alliance Trainer)
Matt Johnson: Duskwood, in the north section of Darkshire. (Alliance Trainer)
Brock Stoneseeker: Loch Modan, Southwest part of Thelsamar. (Alliance Trainer)
Brom Killian: A Horde Trainer who may be found in Undercity, South of the bridge leading to the War Quarter.
Geofram Bouldertoe: Deepmountain Mining Guild in Ironforge. (Alliance Trainer)
Makaru: A Horde Trainer who may be found in Orgrimmar, center of the valley of honor.
Brek Stonehoof: A Horde Trainer who may be found in Thunder Bluff, Western edge of the center plateau.
Yarr Hammerstone: Dun Morogh, eastern edge of Kharanos. (Alliance Trainer)
Dank Drizzlecut: Dun Morogh, north of Gol’bolbar Quarry. (Alliance Trainer)
2) A mining pick. It should be noted that you can also use enchanted picks as the only difference between it and a normal weapon is its glow once equipped. It may seem pointless, but some people think this is a cool feature.
3) Gloves (optional but recommended). Get the cheapest gloves you can find and enchant them with 5 mining skill. This won’t cost you more than 2 gold.
For those who were asking about this, your chances of getting a crystal will not be improved by using the 5 mining skill. However, it may deccrease the possibility of failed attempts.
Engineers Note: If you create for yourself a Goblin Mining helmet, this adds 5 to your existing mining skill.

WoW Mining Guide for Copper Mining
It is recommended that you mine approximately 50 copper then smelt. Note that copper is abundant. You can invent your own mining route or you can make use of any of these:
World of Warcraft Mining Locations:
* Alterac Mountains
* Ashenvale
* Darkshore
* Desolace
* Dun Morogh
* Durotar
* Duskwood
* Elwynn Forest
* Hillsbrad Foothills
* Loch Modan
* Mulgore
* Redridge Mountains
* Silverpine Forest
* Stonetalon Mountains
* The Barrens
* Thousand Needles, Tirisfal Glades, Westfall, and Wetlands
Horde
- Tauren: Mulgore: Simply select any starting point and follow the cliffs that you would see along the way. And remember to check out the Venture Company mine. You should obtain about 40-50 copper on this course.
- Orc and Troll: An easy way to do this is to simply complete whole circuits of Durotar. However, there is plenty of copper here, that it might be more enjoyable to begin at the Razor Hill and afterwards move West towards the Quilboar grounds, hugging the cliff face until the river is reached before moving up North to finally set foot at Orgrimmar. After which, you could move East until you reach a small farmstead, then head South to drop into the canyon. Following the canyon and heading South East, you’ll find yourself in the razor hill again. At the end of all these you’ll earn about 25-30 copper ores.
- Undead: Starting from the entrance of DeathKnell, go towards the south and follow the cliffs all the way round. Pass the Undercity, all the way up to the bulwark. From there, go north to Scarlet monastery. Travel west when you reach the coast, and then go south afterwards to follow the cliffs down to Agamand Mills. Travel to the south again after that, and follow those hills back to the entrance of Deathknell. This run should get you about 30-40 copper ores.
Alliance
- Night elves: Darnassus has completely no ores, thus you must move to Darkshore. Begin at Auberdine and then move East until you find the cliffs at the top of the map. Then, move Southward, hug the cliff face as you move. When you arrive at the entrance of Ashenvale, go West towards the coast and then go back North, back to Auberdine. After which, move East, like you did before, but this time, heading North, following the clifts around the coast, heading South once more to Auberdinewhen when you arrive at the cliffs. This follows a figure 8 pattern and you’ll find this easier as compared with taking Auberdine in one whole route. You’ll earn here about 40-50 copper ores.
Dwarves and Gnomes: Copper is abundant in almost all places, which is why you don’t really need a route to follow here.
Human: Beginning at Goldshire as you head East to the North of Crystal Lake, once you reach the North of the logging camp, move South. Follow the course of the river to the borders of Duskwood and Elwyn forest, before moving North West to return to Goldshire. Visiting at least 2 mines on this trek earns you about 30-40 copper ores.
