Traditional Belly Dancing Coins

by Paul J Eastwood

When you begin your adventure in belly dancing you will want to enjoy the fun of creating the perfect belly dancing costume. When a belly dancer is performing for an audience, her costume is as much a part of the entertainment as her movements. Gold accessories are very popular for belly dancing costumes.

Belly dancers do not wear very much jewelry as a rule. They find that wearing too much jewelry can inhibit their dance movements. The addition of belly dancing coins is an exception to this rule. Scarves and bras are usually decorated with these coins for a traditional touch.

The Tradition

Where belly dancing coins originated is not known. It is believed that the tradition started when the members of the audience would give the belly dancer coins to show that they enjoyed her show. Other people believe that the tradition started with gypsy dancers that also use coins in their traditional dance. Whereever it started, wearing coins on a belly dancing costume is almost required.

Scarves

The scarves that are used around the hips are commonly adorned with coins. The color and movement of the scarf is accompanied by the flash and sound of the coins as the dancer performs their dance. It is possible to find scarves that already have the coins attached or you can add the coins yourself.

You can also usually find scarves that have the holes already for adding coins. This allows you to add coins, beads, and jewels to your scarf for a look that is completely unique.

Headwear

The headwear is another place for adding coins. If you don’t wish to have anything around your hips while you are dancing then you can choose to add the coins to your headwear. A headdress that is completely made of coins is certainly a very dramatic statement.

Tops

Coins can be added to your bra top if you wish. You can opt to have them sewn on or you can add them on your own if you prefer. The bottom part of the top is a very likely place to add coins. This allows for them to have

Singers Must Learn How to Project Their Voice

by Thomas Smythe

The development of your vocal skills should include voice projection, which is the way you sound to your listeners. While most people are visual, if you are singing for an audience they will also be influenced by the sound of your voice as you sing. Do you sound powerful communicating your song with emotion? That should be your goal as a performer.

For example, someone can sing a song with perfect pitch, but if they cannot sing with power and projection the voice will sound weak and unimpressive. That is the last thing a performer wants to impose in front of their audience. When you learn the proper techniques of voice projection, you will also learn how to protect the health of your vocal cords.

If you speak or sing from the throat, it affects the quality of your singing or speaking. And it affects how long you’re able to speak or sing so that it may cause damage to the vocal chords. If your breath is shallow and you don’t take in enough air, you don’t oxygenate the muscles or have enough air to expel for a prolonged which makes the final notes trail off and sound raspy or breathy.

When you sing or speak in combination with the throat, the diaphragm and lungs you will generate a large chamber that will help manifest a warm sounding voice. If your voice resonates loudly in this chamber you will find that you will sound louder yet place little stress on your vocal chords. You can influence the volume and range of the sounds with the size of the chamber, because the mouth cannot accomplish this alone on its own.

In order to increase volume the speaker has to push the air out harder because with the deeper breath, the diaphragm does the work. When shallow breathing occurs, the speaker or singer uses the same muscles that work when screaming or shouting takes place. This slams the vocal chords against each other and has the same effect as a constant cough which can cause damage over a long period.

Audiences view weak pitches from a singer as unprofessional and boring, if they hear the voice at all. If you have a weak voice that does not command attention, you are severely handicapped as a singer. A microphone may add some volume but doesn’t compete with deeper breathing.

Tense muscles are the enemy of the professional singer, because it comes with shallow breathing which does not help the tonal quality. Vocal projection goes hand in hand with good posture. If you can learn to stand upright while feeling comfortable without stress you will discover that you can reach more high and low notes while you sing, which is a great benefit.

All songs require good interpretation when you sing, as it is a part of being a good musician in general. You tell a story as you sing and you need to keep the audiences attention. When done correctly it almost hypnotizes the audience as they listen intently. Without proper breathing, there is no projection. Without projection, the song is forced and the singer loses much of the quality they strive to achieve.

Reach Those High Notes With Ease!

by Thomas.L. Smythe

If you ever sang in the shower (because there are some great acoustics in the bathroom) what happens when you want to hit the high note? Do you strain and crack and then force air that turns your thin note into a falsetto? Many people do not have the proper vocal training to hit the high notes with ease, if you want to stay a shower head balladeer then hiring a vocal coach does not make much sense.

Most people never really think about it, but most people treat their voices roughly every day by shouting, shrieking, coughing loudly, and not to mention using cigarettes. This poor treatment of your voice in combination with the limited range of sound you do when you are speaking, does not help the voice if you are a singer at all. No singer who wants to be taken seriously must treat their voice this poorly, so they should get some input from an experienced vocal performer about care of the singer’s voice.

Our vocal cords have to be taken care of which means proper resting, and some people talk too much but do not sing enough! If you are trying to hit the high notes and you are using all your might then you are doing it wrong. A high note is sung with the same range as the notes before it, and the breathing technique is what allows you to reach the higher notes.

When you train with correct breathing it becomes the most important part of singing. Talking involves breathing, swimming, running; anything that makes you use your lungs to allow air to be recycled needs to be practiced. If you are not breathing properly you cannot allow your voice to react in a way that will allow you to sing higher.

We talked about falsetto, which is not using your lungs. Instead it is using your neck and throat muscles which are the muscles are not designed for singing. You must practice breathing in order to relax yourself so you can comfortably reach the higher notes. For example, Lamaze teaches breathing techniques for expectant mothers,as its practice is used to help them feel more comfortable and at ease.

If you do not have a vocal coach and have to practice at home its harder to know if you are achieving the higher notes by ear. If you play piano then you can use scales to help you hit the higher notes. On guitar you can usually match a chord or practice with certain songs. You are not supposed to mirror higher notes until you can understand the root of the note.

If you want to really hear your voice so you can study it, record yourself singing. The best part about hearing your voice sing is the authenticity it has, voice impersonators can sound like somebody but only you can match your real voice. You will have the chance to hear your pronunciations of words and your delivery, and make the necessary corrections if you need to.

While you sing and listen try to sing along with your recorded voice to see if you can match exactly the recorded voice. You can even try to sing in harmony just for fun, or just sing along with the melody of the song that you recorded. You will then become familiar with your range when you sing and try to expand it even more with more practice.

Getting Started In Homeschooling Your Child

by Danise B. Keasda

Home schooling are better known as home education has become a favorite way for parents to get an education for their children. Many parents are dissatisfied with the schools in their area, for one reason or another, and if one parent has time during the day to take the time to act as teacher, counselor, and gym instructor, they may decide to teach their own children at home.

From 1964 on, there has been a growing number of parents taking a look at their local public schools and deciding that crowded classrooms and strictly regulated curricula did not allow teachers to give students the individual attention they truly needed.

Parents whose children were enrolled in these crowded schools made the assessment that they would be better able to provide their children with a good education than could the public schools and thus began the homeschooling movement in this country. In most states, an “umbrella school” is available - this is a standardized suggested curriculum for home schooling parents, including tests; the state often provides the necessary school supplies for students and gives the child a monthly checkup on their academic progress. The program is designed to give home schooled children as close as possible to a standard scholastic environment.

In order for a family to home school their children, the parent has to find a certified correspondence school that will accept them. There are compulsory school attendance laws, which have to be followed. The school then has an approved curriculum that must be adhered to.

If you are interested in home schooling your child, you may find it helpful to get in contact with other parents who home school their children. You can give your children an opportunity to socialize via having a regular group classroom, field trips and the like; this is a good move since socialization is the thing lacked by many home schooled children

Many parents who home school their children are concerned about how this choice may impact their child’s odds of getting into the college of their choice. Every state allows parents who home school to issue high school transcripts for their children, but is a good idea to keep very detailed records of your child’s scholastic progress. Home schooled students are permitted to enroll in more than 900 colleges and universities.

The idea behind home schooling is that children are naturally interested in learning and will want to know more about the world around them, especially in their particular areas of interest.

One of the advantages of home schooling is that children who have been home schooled are generally much stronger performers, academically speaking then are their peers who have been educated in public schools - this is one of the biggest reasons that parents choose to home school their children.

Frankenstein Remembered

by Fabian Toulouse

When you think of the Frankenstein movies, names like Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Mary Shelley and James Whale come to mind. But have you ever heard of Kenneth Strickfaden? Long ignored in the annals of horror movie fame, Strickfaden is the man whose electrical designs made Frankenstein the movie that it is. He was called “Dr. Frankenstein’s electrician” and was directly responsible for all of the electrical effects used in the monster creation scene. He also created all the electrical effects for the slew of other Frankenstein sequels. He was even a stunt double for Boris Karloff, who was deathly afraid of electricity.

Strickfaden was meticulous about his special effects, concocting various laboratory equipment, as well as securing the use of a Tesla Coil built by the legendary scientist Nikola Tesla himself. Rest assured, all the electricity in the film was real, and the equipment he used to produce them became known, in fandom, as “Strickfadens.”

He was responsible for all those dazzling electrical devices Frankenstein and Fritz, in various movies, clutched, clung to, and recoiled from. Strickfaden also coordinated the memorable lightening bolts that shot across the lab. Without the aid of Tesla’s coil, those fantastic discharges would be impossible to create.

It should be noted that Tesla coils are a resonant transformer created by Serbian-American scientist Nikola Tesla around 1891. These coils make very high voltage, low current and high frequency alternating current electricity. The electrical discharges produced those lighting-like plasma filaments that were used in the film. Believe it or not during the early 1900s Tesla coils were used to apply high frequency current directly to the body in what was then considered therapy!

Kenneth Strickfaden was celebrated as an innovative special effects genius, especially in the 1930s and 1940s. He worked on movies from “Frankenstein” to “The Wizard of Oz” to “The Mask of Fu Man Chu.” In his later years, he worked on various television series, including “The Munsters.” With more than 100 motion pictures to his Credit »”>credit, he still managed to give 1500 traveling science demonstrations and lectures across the U.S. and Canada. He remains one of the nearly forgotten heroes of early film and television, where the lightening bolts were real, the laboratory equipment dangerous, and stuntmen walked into electricity storms.

Solvents and Mad Scientists

by Fabian Toulouse

When you think of a mad scientist, you’re bound to call upon images of a be-speckled, manically laughing, slightly hunched over crackpot in a laboratory surrounded by beakers full of bubbling, fizzing solvents and crackling electrical machines. The mad scientist is perpetually obsessed with ranting monologues about being misunderstood by the world. He’s not mad, he’s misunderstood and now the world has to pay for not supporting his megalomaniacal wish to play God.

Every culture has its distinctive mad scientist: Victor Frankenstein, Doctor Jekyll, Rotwang, Dr. Steel, Griffin, Doctor No, The Invisible Man, Dr. Phibes and, of course, Dr. Moreau. They have all been exiled form normal science and are forced to experiment in secret until that fateful day, when they will unleash their creation on the world. A multitude of bad experiments and bad special effects could have been kept from the world, if only reasonable scientists had listened to their stark, raving mad associates.

For our lack of devotion, we have been flooded with a multitude of Saturday matinees and worn, thumbed-through paperback novels chronicling their exploits. Comic books and posters alike encapsulate famous line like, “They all laughed at me. But I will show them. One day it will be the one who laughs last!” And so the voyage to the center of madness continues, with us, the audience, grinning from ear to ear.

There have been numerous great actors who have made their names playing mad scientists. Luminaries like Bela Lugosi, Charles Laughton, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and the indomitable, Vincent Price have all reinforced that powerful archetype. Price, in particular, surprised audiences with his depiction of the disfigured Dr. Phibes, in The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971). So twisted and entrancing a tale was woven by the filmmakers that audiences demanded a sequel, Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972).

In “The Island of Doctor Moreau,” written by H.G. Wells in 1896, our mad scientist is the eponymous Dr. Moreau. He uses a battery of medications and solvents that turn animals into humans, which have managed to populate his hidden island. Moreau is lord of these man-beasts, and though he has caused tremendous pain and suffering, he has no intention to stop his experiments. As the story unfolds, the protagonist, Prendick, the archetype of the English upper-class, slowly begins to understand that indeed Moreau is onto something concerning the nature of man. Indeed it seems that something is our never-ending fascination with the misunderstood and the incomprehensible.

Teach your child to give using a stuffed toy

by Wendy Tsao

Stuffed toys are child’s most precious possession. A child creates special emotional bondage with his stuffed toys which makes it very difficult for him to give away. Stuffed toys are your child imaginary friend whom he can talk to when everyone else isn’t present.

Many mothers have expressed concerns that they hear their children talking to their favorite stuffed toys, hugs them when they get back to school and take them to bed with them. What they don’t understand is that their children are absolutely physiologically healthy and any thing else isn’t. A normal healthy child opens up his senses to the world and communicates in his own way with his surrounding which might be difficult to understand from an adult point of view.

This emotional bondage that a child creates with his stuffed toy makes it very difficult for him to give away. It is a common word that we hear coming out of a child when someone asks him to give his stuffed toy “No, This is mine, Mammy got it for me”. Mothers get troubled by hearing these words as they think that their children are growing selfish and not giving. They try to force their children into giving things away which creates a very harmful emotional experience in the child mind that might affect his whole future.

The right way to teach your child to give his old stuffed toys is to convince him that there are other children out there who are unprivileged as he is and they need these old toys more than he does. It is always a good idea to take your child to see other children in orphanages or children in poor neighborhoods where their parents can’t get them any toys to play with to understand that they really need his old stuff. Invite your child to deliver his stuffed toys to these children and play with them.

Many might think that this would be a hard emotional experience for a child to pass but they are absolutely wrong. This experience will teach your children how to appreciate what they have and work hard to keep it. Also it strengths their social commitment to the society and make them effective contributing citizens.

It is always a good idea to reward your child for his good deeds by taking him to the toy store to get a new gift of his choice. This new toy will motivate him to do more good things to get new things. These actions will repeat until giving is a habit in your child behavior and will remain in his mind as a wonderful experience that gives him a good feeling of self esteem.

In order to make this experience more exciting for your child, Add some “I am proud of you son” flavor to the gift you give to your child after giving away his old toys. Transform your child drawing into stuffed toys adding a nice photo of you and your family and nice words to tell your child how much you love him. Rest assured that your child will always remember this stuffed toy for the rest of his life and it will be the first thing comes up in his mind when he does a good thing along with your sweet voice saying to him “That’s my baby”.

Learn How to Use Breath Support

by Thomas L. Smythe

If you aspire to be a fine singer, make appropriate breath support your primary concern. When singers practice breath support regularly, they will find that the power and dynamics of the voice will increase exponentially. There will be elimination of uncontrolled vibrato and a mediocre sound when breath support is used. Make it a part of your regular practice so that it will become second nature to you every time you sing.

What exactly can you accomplish as a singer with the correct breath support? While you sing, be vigilant of your good or weak breathing habits so you can quickly correct any bad breathing techniques. For the most part, people are inclined to breath in a shallow manner because they are not totally aware how they breath. As a aspiring singer, you need to be conscious when you breath shallowly so you can stop it.

Most singers today realize how important the role of the diaphragm represents. If used correctly, the diaphragm will push and control the quantity of air going through your lungs while you sing. It is paramount that a singer learns how to use the diaphragm to enhance the quality, tone, and projection of the voice.

As a singer, train yourself to control the way that you breathe, so that you use the diaphragm for your breath support when you sing. As you use the diaphragm, keep the stomach stable with no movement as you practice your breath support. If you do this accuragely, the diaphragm will be doing the best job for your breath support when you sing.

The lungs greatly increase in size when you inhale and slowly push out the air. As you sing while doing this technique, you will find that the muscles that sustain your lungs will enlarge. If you want to get skilled at more techniques, your teacher or a qualified or suggested online singing courses will furnish more information.

An upright and straight back will give you excellent posture and enable you to make the air eject more easily from the diaphragm. If your neck and shoulders are tense and stressed, it will make your diaphragm less effective. As a result, the singer’s voice can sound much less powerful and not project well at all, so good posture should be your main concern while performing.

Breath support is a essential part of vocal training, whether it is by an experienced teacher or a qualified Internet singing course. It is important because the knowledge of proper breathing and breath support is basic to a good singer’s foundation. As you apply your daily breath support exercises, you will discover that it gets more natural and easier every time you do it.

You must make breath support your priority if you want to have a firm foundation as a singer or performer. An added bonus of good breath support is that your speaking voice will benefit as a result because it will sound fuller and sound more self-assured. You should take every opportunity to practice breathing correctly as it will place you at an edge over other singers who do not breath properly when singing.
