No Limit Holdem Semi Bluffing Strategy
Bluffing is one of the most fundamental, and intriguing parts of poker. No limit games increase the power of a well-timed bluff. Nothing is more fun to do than to win a nice pot with no cards.
There are many ways you can bluff your opponent. You can bluff in many different situations. Let’s look at one of these bluffing plays, the semi-bluff.
When you run a semi-bluff you have a hand that might become very good. You bet before this happens, disguising what you have. When you use this bluff you want to have a lot of chips, so that when it hits, you will get paid well.
Let’s say you have Kd-Jd in the big blind. The player on the button makes a raise of 3x the big blind. You call, and the flop is Ad-6d-2h. You now have the nut flush draw, a perfect opportunity to use the semi-bluff.
If you come out with a decent sized bet, this is a semi-bluff. It will hopefully affect your opponent in one of the following ways. He will fold if he thinks he’s beat. He will only call if he has a hand but now isn’t sure if he is best. He will not think you have a flush draw. He might slow play his hand if it’s very strong.
If he makes a huge raise you must consider folding. If he just calls, you have control of the hand. If you do make a flush, you have a good chance to get paid big.
When you miss the turn you either check, hoping to see the river for free, or make a raise, hoping to get your opponent to fold. Making the raise sets you up for a monster pot if the river hits.
When you bet the turn and get a fold, your semi-bluff has landed you a nice pot. If you are called, or he bets back at you, you can be confident that he has a hand.
When you’ve made a small bet and get called, you might be against a weaker flush draw. This will be a great situation if the flush hits on the turn. If you are re-raised big, you’re beat, and he is making you pay to see more cards. This might force you to fold.
When you check the turn, and he bets, you can call if the pot odds, and implied odds are good enough. Even though you are behind, if the price is right, try and hit the flush.
This hand, played without the bluff will go very differently. When you check, and then call his raise after the flop, you hand is not disguised. He will put you on a flush draw. Then when you hit your flush, you won’t get paid. By using the semi-bluff you can make a lot more money in this situation.
These two situations will cost you lots of money if you aren’t careful. For that reason, I would not bet as heavily in these situations. Perhaps not even using the semi-bluff at all as it makes a bigger pot when played out
The semi-bluff is a high variance play. By that, I mean that you will have greater swings in your bankroll betting this way. But the profits can be much higher when done successfully. Good luck at the tables.
