We have all heard or told an urban legend or two, maybe even contributed to their spread. What fascinates us the most about these legends is that, despite the grandiose tall tale aspects, these stories are most often based in fact. This is especially true of narratives that pertain to science.

Now, if a person wanted to separate truth from fiction from such tales, they would first have to know how to set up controlled experiments. These experiments would then have to be performed safely, so testers could provide a definitive ‘yah’ or ‘nah’ as to the myth’s authenticity.

This basic premise is what fuels the extremely popular Discovery Channel cable television series, MythBusters.

MythBusters Show Format In every informative episode, the stars of the show would take a popular notion, like the idea that Coca-Cola can clean the rust off a chrome bumper and test this to see if this idea is valid. Upon creating several control situations, they work several angles to prove or disprove the particular belief.

Although the main stars of the show, namely Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, are experts in visual and special effects, they often ask experts in the field to help them with the shows various investigations.

For example, if they wanted to prove whether or not an individual can be harmed by lightening while talking on a land line based telephone, they would consult with energy experts. Some of these experts may even oversee trial runs to authenticate the results. This doesn’t keep viewers from challenging the duos findings, which is all a part of the shows allure. More often than not however, many well known myths, old wives tales and science fallacies are, as Jamie and Adam would say, ‘Busted’.

MythBusters Stars and Interns The show’s primary stars, Jamie and Adam, are the main headliners of MythBusters. This twosome is often responsible for developing the subject matter for the show. Even so, the special effects duo will often ask avid fans of the Discovery Channel show to contribute to show ideas as well.

When Jamie and Adam were later joined by young interns Scottie Chapman, Tory Belleci and Kari Byron, they were able to expand the series a bit, bringing in new concepts as well as broader viewer demographic.

The newcomers were young but brilliant which made MythBusters more appealing to a youthful fan base. For instance, the lovely Kari was an amazing visual artist, Scottie was a metal worker and Tory a carpenter craftsman. This team’s background and unique and interesting personalities lent an even more fun and playful air to the weekly, somewhat educational broadcast.

Scottie was later replaced by Grant Imahara after he had to leave the show during the third season.

Imahara was a welcome addition, as he brought to a show not only a winsome and charming personality, but knowledge in electronics and robotics.

Where is MythBusters shot? The show is filmed in San Francisco California and the ‘soundstage’ can be at the MythBusters workshop or on location in various ares around town.

A UK version airs on the BBC as well, and to date, the show itself plays on numerous cable stations internationally.

MythBusters continues to grow in popularity because it is a fun and interesting way to challenge popular misconceptions about science and long held erroneous beliefs. Fans also feel as if they are a part of the fun as they can suggest show ideas or even offer their own commentary about shows.

In this way, MythBusters combines educational properties with entertainment principles, so that people of all ages can get something from the show and have fun in the process. To this day no one knows how or where belly dancing started. What is known is that belly dancing has evolved through centuries to become what it is today. From what historians have learned, it is clear that belly dancing has been used as goddess worship, fertility rituals and celebrations.

The History In The Middle East

In Arabic, belly dancing is known as Raks Sharqi. It means oriental dance. Originally this dance was performed for women by other women. There were men’s clubs where young men for other men would perform the dance. Through history belly dancing was never performed for the showing of skin. In fact, the original costumes were designed so that no part of the woman’s body would be revealed.

The history of belly dancing is full of debate and controversy. In 1893 belly dancing got its name. The show at the Chicago World Fair was not getting very much attention with the name Egyptian dance so the wise producer changed the name to belly dancing and the rest is history. In Egypt this scandalous dance was brought to the attention of the politicians. Once the 1950′s rolled around belly dancing had become outlawed. The public was not happy about the banning and eventually it was repealed with the condition that the dancers would cover their abdomens.

The History of Belly Dance In America

Finally belly dancing made its way to the United States. It was originally only seen in burlesque shows or in vaudeville acts. Many people believed that the dance was scandalous or inappropriate because of its limited venues. Hollywood only added to the reputation by using dancers in their movies. In these Hollywood films the dancers were often portrayed as women of ill repute or the damsel in distress. This stereotyping is still in existence today.

The history of belly dancing in the U.S. actually started before the Chicago World Fair. In 1876 at the Pennsylvania Centennial the very first belly dancers in America performed. It didn’t gain its popularity until the Chicago Fair, however.

Currently, belly dancing has enjoyed a resurgence of its popularity in the United States. In the 50′s a group of clubs in many large cities used belly dancers for entertainment. By the 60′s the dancers were giving lessons. This increased the number of dancers by very large numbers. Many dancers began to change the style of the dance in order to make themselves stand apart. This has caused belly dancing to lose its standing because of the lack of a standard choreography associated with the dance.

There has recently been an effort to combine a number of styles and call it American Tribal Style Belly Dance. The history of belly dance is one that is as rich and diverse as the many styles that can lay claim to the title belly dance. It will no doubt continue to evolve and change.

Before the day’s of Disney’s Pixar and digital animation, there were a special group of people whose lasting innovation brought to the big screen some amazing work that blended live-action and animation. Originally planned as a live-action production, “Pete’s Dragon” never got off the ground, ending up in the Disney vault for nearly two decades. Almost ten years after the death of Walt Disney, the fantasy of “Pete’s Dragon” was revived. In the original version, Pete’s invisible dragon, Elliott, was only going to be seen once in the movie. But under the genius of Don Bluth and Ken Anderson, Elliott not only came to life, but has become one of the most beloved Disney heroes in history.

The process of adding an animated main character into the live-action film was no small task. If you recall the technology of digital animation was new in the early 1990′s with “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Rescuers Down Under.” That was a long fifteen years after “Pete’s Dragon” began production. Pixar, when they came onto the scene, were considered light years ahead in comparison to the technology used in “Pete’s Dragon.” Rather than Xeroxing the drawings of Elliott onto the live-action cells, many of the cells had to be tediously hand inked. To ensure that the final artwork matched the live action, Don Bluth insisted that Elliott’s stomach and outline were hand inked in key scenes.

The movie begins with young Pete trying to escape the abuse of a swamp family, the Gogans, who had bought him from an orphanage to essentially work as a slave. The viewer is immediately drawn into the story, watching the Gogan family, headed by the talented Shelly Winters, break into a song and dance about the torture they plan to inflict on poor Pete.

With the help of his invisible dragon, Elliott, Pete makes his way out of the swamplands and ends up in the little fishing village of Passamaquoddy. It isn’t long before we see that, while Elliott is usually invisible, he still takes up a wide berth and leaves evidence of his size in his wake. This causes a massive amount of trouble for the scrawny, bedraggled Pete who has a hard time convincing the townspeople of his innocence. Befriended by the breathtaking lighthouse keeper, Nora (played by Helen Reddy), Pete is welcomed into a real home where he is given warm food, clean clothes, and the first acts of human kindness he had experienced in a very long time. Nora’s father, Lampie, played by Mickey Rooney, believes wholeheartedly in the existence of Pete’s invisible friend. The story unfolds with laughter, love, compassion, adventure, and the conviction that happy endings are simply miracles in the waiting.

“Pete’s Dragon” showcases the talents of Helen Reddy, Jim Dale, Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, and Jim Backus.
