Most of us have a digital camera and can record the important events in our lives with it. But there are times when it is worth paying a professional to do it right. One such occasion is when getting the portrait of a person or group. It will of course cost more than if you did it yourself. But you will be making an investment in the future by recording a reminder of the past. Such occasions mean you will want to choose a photographer wisely. Below are eight principles designed to help you with this decision.

1) Location- Is the studio close enough to your home to be convenient? Remember that you will probably have to go there at least three times, to get the picture made, to make a choice, and to pick up the final product. Too, is it accessible or do you have to cross a heavy traffic area?

2) Facility- One family got up early on a Saturday morning to meet their appointment for a family portrait only to find the studio was too small to get everyone in the picture. Is the studio large enough to accommodate the group you want photographed?

3) Punctuality- Are they on time for the appointment you made with them? Have they allowed enough time to get the picture right? Are the promised results available when they promised? Check with others who have used their services to see if they are punctual.

6) Choice- A good photographer will take ample pictures so that you have plenty of choices. Are the proofs ready to view immediately or will you have to return? Will they make recommendations that are in your best interest and not just their pocketbook? Are they able to present the various packages without putting you under pressure?

7) Integrity- Do they keep their promises? For example, if they promised one free picture if you posed for them, do they keep that promise? Are the pictures ready on the promised date? If you know someone who used them before, ask if their overall experience was good or bad?
Price- photographs may seem expensive but when you remember that they must pay for quality cameras, staff, and facilities, it is worth the extra expense. Yet, the price should be competitive. Call around to see what the average costs are for the picture you want.

Have you ever questioned why on earth we celebrate Halloween and where the thought came from? If you are like most of us, you just enjoy the fun and games, and of course treats, and haven’t really given the beginnings of the holiday much thought. But the history of Halloween is a really cool story in its own right.

Very Far back in the day, about 2000 or so years ago, there lived a people known as Celts. They inhabited the area we call Ireland, and there were also some in France and the UK, too. In fact, the oral communication that is spoken in Ireland is not Irish, as you may think. It is Celtic.

Anyway, the Celtic people had a dissimilar New Year’s Day than we do here nowadays. Their new year began on November 1st; this is plausibly because November marked the end of the bountiful, glorious, harvest time of year and the start of the cold, dark winter. Therefore, it seems like a perfect time for branding a new year, right?

So, the Celtic people had a hypothesis that their New Year’s Eve, October 31, was the night when there was the perfect opportunity for the specters of dead people to comeback to earth, and so the worlds of the living and the dead combined for a night. On this night, the Celtic people called on their Druid priests for insight into what was to come in the New Year. And some hypotheses of the history of Halloween include the priests’ ability to know the future by discovering it from the dead who rejoined to earth.

So, the early interpretation of Halloween, called SamHain (“sow-in”), was born. The Celts usually built these vast bonfires and dressed up in the skins of animals. They accumulated around the bonfires in these “costumes” and sacrificed a small amount of their crops and animals to the Celtic gods in the hopes that the gods would be good to them in the approaching year.

Later, the Romans overran Ireland and the other Celtic lands, and they bestowed their own twist into what we now recognize as Halloween; subsequently the history of Halloween was changed a bit. They added a couple things into SamHain. First, they added a day called Faralia, which was a day the Romans had set aside as a day to recollect and honor those who had died before us. Then, they also included a day to delight Pomona, a goddess whose symbolic representation is the apple. Remember those days of bobbing for apples as a kid? You can thank Pomona for that tradition.

Then, Christianity came to the area, around the 800s. The Pope at the time, Pope Bonaface, declared November 1st All Saint’s Day, which is still renowned as a Holy Day by the Catholic Church. The Church often times tried to replace pagan holidays with related holidays in order to placate the pagan people who wanted festivals, but also to make Christian-based celebrations. The night before All Saint’s Day, SamHain to the Celts, began to be called All Hallow’s Eve or All Hallow’s Mass. Finally, it became recognized as Halloween.

If singing is an important part of your life, whether you are a professional or an amateur, you will find that you need to take care of you voice! There are things that can injure it, including exposure to harmful substances and simple over use and if you do not take care of the problem as it arises, you may find that you are dealing with more serious problems down the line. Remember that in many ways, your voice is like an important tool, so make sure that you take good care of it.

If you are experiencing problems such as hoarseness. drainage or sore throats, try to find out the cause of the problems. Take the time and visit an experienced doctor that specializes in voice problems for singers, as it will be well worth it for you. You will save a lot of grief and problems down the road if you work with your doctor and not self medicate yourself, because you may not be right about the condition or cause.

When you sing or use your voice too much, you could damage your vocal cord tissue which you definitely to not want to have. The last thing a singer would want would be to have vocal cords that sound harsh and abrasive. Most professional singers care about the state of their voice and their physical health as they want to be the best they can possible be when they perform.

You will find that smoking can cause your voice to go hoarse as it will irritate the mucous membranes in your throat and vocal cords. This is quite similar to a cold or a flu, which has much the same effect or a dry environment. Also keep in mind that Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease, also known as GERD can affect the quality of your voice to a very large extent.

Raspy and dry throats will need some quick treatment such as breathing some hot steam. Start boiling some water, then put your face over the hot water while your mouth takes in the hot steam. Stay cautious, as you do not want to burn yourself, but you do want to get the hot steam gradually in your throat so that it gets moisture it needs which will in turn lessens tension and dryness.

If you are looking for a fast fix for a irritated or sore throat, try gargling lemon juice and honey. Do it once in the morning and then later in the early evening, as this can soothe a raspy throat. Or you can sip a 6 ounce cup of water mixed with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, which can calm an inflamed throat.

If you care for your voice as a singer, pay extra attention to caring for it so that you can avoid potential problems. If you are suffering from some hoarseness or a sore throat, avoid singing for the day so that you don’t place extra stress on your vocal cords. Again, refrain from using alcohol or cigarettes and keep away from smoky rooms as these are very detrimental to vocal health.

Always remember to take the time to go to a doctor if a problem persists, because it will lead to more serious problems later. You don’t want to be known as the singer who didn’t care for their voice properly. If you take yourself seriously as a singer then your voice and its health should be one of your top priorities.
