Teaching Children To Write – 6 Tips
Learning to write is very important today. The internet is setting the pace in this new information age and writing is one of the best ways to communicate online and in many other settings. Your children learn to write by writing so you need to create a writing atmosphere in your home. Here are 6 tips to help you get started.
1. Inspire them. Show your children that writing can be very fun and exciting. Show them letters you have written. If you keep a journal show your children how rewarding and exciting it is to look back through the years in your journal.
2. Writing competition. Something you can try is a writing competition. I did this with my own children and it was great. I had each of them write a 400 word article on any subject they chose. You can try this and give them any reward you feel is appropriate for the best one.
3. Start a blog. Blogs have become extremely popular and you could use it as a family journal. Your children could write articles and then they could let their friends know about the blog as a way to show off their work. You could even give your readers an opportunity to make comments about the different articles and vote for the best one.
4. Your children need a notebook. With a notebook your kids can write down their thoughts and ideas on many different subjects. If you have a blog then this will be particularly helpful for them when they are trying to come up with ideas for their next article. Kids can also use the notebooks to start a journal.
5. Teach your children to write thank you notes. You can buy some “thank you note” stock and then get your kids to thank those who have given them gifts with a note. As a tax accountant I get thank you notes from my clients and it means worlds. I can imagine it is the same for you and others.
6. Make letter writing a habit. How many friends and family have you lost contact with over the years? Start a letter writing campaign in your family and set letter writing goals. Your family can send letters to each other at first complete with address, envelope, and a stamp.
Teaching children to write first requires that you inspire your kids. Show them how much fun writing can be. Next teach them activities where they can see the many benefits of writing.
