It’s funny how a small business starts. People get tired of their jobs and decide to work for themselves, and start looking at their options. Some of us just have great ideas that branch out and become our livelihood; others are hobbies that lead to a part-time job. And then there are the small businesses that started by accident.

As for me, it was the latter. I was an electrical engineer at a local airport. Responsible for fixing much of the tv and audio equipment, I was kept very busy most of the time. One day a friend of mine who worked security at the airport brought me his receiver and asked me if I could fix it. I opened it up and discovered that it was very similar to the equipment I worked on, so there was no problem fixing it.

When I went to return the receiver to my friend, he told me to keep it. His wife had talked him into getting a new system. I took it home and put an ad in the local free classified paper. Within a week I had sold it, and for a nice amount. The next time I was out at garage sales and saw a similar system I picked it up, and a few other things besides. I had found a new hobby and a way to supplement my income.

Often we’d find equipment at the side of the road, pick it up and take it home to find out that it worked perfectly. An hour or so of cleaning and testing and it was ready to resell. No matter what my dad got for it, it was all profit. There aren’t many businesses that can boast that. Over the years my dad has branched out to other electronic items, but used stereo equipment and tvs remains his bread and butter.

When I am looking at used stereo equipment, it’s usually easy to see if it’s going to be a wise purchase. First check for cracks or dents on the outside casing to make sure it hasn’t been dropped. Then as long as it turns on when you plug it in you are good to go. These systems are much more durable then new ones and last for many years.

Children are a lot of fun to photograph, and are rarely camera shy. Before you being photographing them, start thinking like one. Get inspired by simple things, and find the awe in everything. The following tips will help you take great photographs of kids.

1. Get on their level and bend down or lie on the ground. Sometimes when you photograph children from above you imply control and dominance over them. When you photograph them from below, you empower them and elevate them.

2.Try photographing children with their friends and family. Document children interacting with other children, their siblings and parents. To start out, children may want to be photographed with their parents until they get comfortable with you and the camera.

3. Remember to be patient. Don’t get too frustrated, photographing children is not easy. Kids will need breaks and refreshments. If you rush the sessions you may not be getting the photographs you want, so slow down and even photograph them when you don’t think they are doing anything at all.

4. Pay close attention to their expressions and eyes. Capture how they react to the world around them. Maybe even ask them to make happy or funny faces. Have them look directly into the camera, and have them lean in.

5. You may want to bring children to a new playground or park. It’s fun to watch them explore their new environment. If you are photographing them outside (which is the best light), remember that the best lighting is before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.

6. Relax. Children can sense fear, and if you are nervous they will be uncomfortable. If you are having fun, so will they. Bring props such as toys or games, and food is also not a bad idea.

It’s always good to give children some direction, but let them be themselves and make sure they are having fun. You never know what they will do, so be prepared to capture those precious fleeting moments. While you may want some posed pictures, candid ones generally produce the best shots.

Modern generations marvel at the intelligence and creativity displayed by ancient civilizations. In ancient times, people were dependant on their minds to create, solve, and entertain. Today, most people turn their minds off and turn on the TV or radio when it’s time to be entertained.

From time to time, when we find the regular media is rather dull, or we feel that our minds need a bit of a workout, we will turn to brain twisters and riddles, or crossword puzzles. It is one of the ways that we explore our thought processes, and how we encourage our own creative side. Without riddles and puzzles, our brains become rather dull themselves. All people have a deep need for activities that shape the mind and help us develop new ideas and concepts.

Many ancient games have been modernized, or simply repackaged, for a modern audience. Others have had a few tweaks to make them more relevant to today’s world. Sudoku may have been played centuries ago, and its simple design can be inviting to newcomers, but there are layers in abundance here.

The word “Sudoku” is derived from the word for “number place.” Based on the Japanese language, Sudoku indicates that it is a logic-based placement. Therefore, it is a kind of puzzle game. The first modern Sudoku puzzle was published in a US magazine in 1979. It was picked up by players in Japan in 1984 and was instantly popular. The original name of the game was abbreviated to Sudoku, which, translated into English, actually means “the digits must remain single.” There are also various different pronunciations of “Sudoku” throughout the world, but the basic elements of the game remain the same. And the mental power benefits also accrue wherever the game is played.

Howard Garns was a retired architect who loved creating puzzles as a freelance effort, and it appears he contributed the first-known version of Sudoku to a puzzle magazine in 1979. It is similar to the Latin Square, which has been much analyzed by Euler, and is an ancient game. Garns added a third dimension, improving on the design, and he offered his version with some of the fields already filled in. It is immediately popular with puzzle players worldwide once they try it for the first time.

The history of Sudoku took another twist in Japan. After Howard Garns introduced the first Sudoku puzzle in a U. S. magazine, a person named Nikoli in Japan picked it up. While Mr. Garns had his own English name for the puzzle, Nikoli gave it the Japanese name Sudoku.

Originally, Sudoku was played manually in Japanese and American publications. In 1989, Loadstar Publishing introduced a computerized version, followed by another version by Apple. Sudoku has also been fashioned into a version of another popular 1980′s puzzle, the Rubik’s Cube.

In the year 1997, the popularity of Sudoku in the media had reached overwhelming heights. A Hong Kong judge named Wayne Gould became so engulfed by the game, he developed his own computerized version of a Sudoku creator.

Nationwide, newspapers would print the puzzles and sell out quickly. World media acknowledged Sudoku as the “fastest growing puzzle in the world”. By 2005, Sudoku was at the peak of its popularity.

Though the puzzle alone is fascinating, the history of Sudoku adds something to the playing of the game as well.
