Do you need some inspiration to take interesting photos? Are you under the impression that you have to travel to a faraway place in order to photograph something intriguing or beautiful? Well, you don’t even need to leave your house! Here are some tips for taking stunning photos anywhere.

1. Find where there is an interesting light and shadow interaction. Remember that photography means “light writing.” How does the light look coming into your house? Are there objects that create interesting shadows? What does the reflection of water in a glass look like on the table?

2. If you think something is boring, start taking close-ups, or even abstract the object so it is unrecognizable. Distort the image by zooming in or changing the angle of the camera. Fish eye and macro lenses are fun if you have access to them. Flowers and fruit are particularly interesting to photograph up close, take the time to look closely.

3. Make it a point to find patterns. They are all around us, and we typically don’t even take the time to see them. If you think monotony is boring, find something with interesting color or texture.

4. Get a different perspective. What do your surroundings look like when you are on the floor, or looking down from above?

5. Experiment with aperture settings and shutter speed. When you set the aperture to a small number, you get a blurred background (shallow depth of field), and when you set your aperture to a bigger number (large depth of field), more of your background will be in focus. If you have a tripod, use a slow shutter speed in low lighting to create glowing effects. To freeze motion, use a fast shutter speed.

6. Have fun with self-portraits. Think about what defines you. What do you want the viewer to know about you? Can you photograph your surroundings and possessions to get a point across without actually being in the photo?

If you’ve ever attended an opera, chances are you were enchanted by the timeless allure and sense of sophistication of this beautiful style of music and performance. It is truly amazing to reflect on the fact that this enduring genre has been going strong for over 400 years, and even enjoying a resurgence in popularity in the United States and abroad.

Opera’s roots are firmly European. The very first opera house, actually a theater designed to host opera performances, was built in Venice, Italy in the 1630′s. Composers of the day were mingling dramatic stories with music that ebbed and flowed. Audiences clamored to experience this blend of music and literary art on stage, and thus opera was born.

In those years, singing and dancing were commonplace at most public gatherings. Due to the size of crowds, strong powerful voices were recruited to perform certain singing parts, both male and female. In time, singers were specifically trained for operatic performances, a practice that continues to this day.

As the 17th century dawned, the popularity of opera spread to other European countries, like France, Germany, and England. Indeed, some of opera’s most famous works come from composers not native to Italy, like Mozart, Richard Strauss, and Georges Bizet.

The Passion Blooms In The United States

As a land of immigrants, it is only natural that those coming to the United States brought along their skills and passions. Certainly this is clearly most evident in New York, where the Metropolitan Opera House opened in 1883. Opera spread to other cities across the country, and audiences filled theaters nationally. Later, well known opera master like Enrico Caruso, Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, and Giuseppe Di Stefano displayed their unique talents to a vast and appreciative American audience.

The Present Day

Opera continues to attract and enchant, witnessed by the fact that 135 opera companies operate in the United States today. One of the most exciting things to do before embarking on a holiday to some exotic location, is to peruse the vast array of travel maps available. In the preparation of planning travel to a foreign country, it is easy to forget that a good map can be just as useful as a guidebook. Under some circumstances, travel maps may even help to get you out of a dicey situation, and can sometimes lead you to undiscovered, reach places your guidebook did not show you. Maps are also an extremely concentrated source of information, can be inexpensive and very light to carry. International travelers should recognize the value of travel maps as crucial to advance planning, because often local sources can be both difficult to find and unreliable.

Which travel map should I buy? How do I make maximum use of it? These are the confusing questions that people are confronted with, and so most of them prefer not to use travel maps at all. A travel map gives a picture of the entire area, as well as detailed information and directions on how to reach the features depicted there. Small-scale maps concentrate on giving a wide picture of the area, whereas the larger-scale maps give area information plus other details. So large maps are more advisable.

The symbols on travel maps are the cartographer’s shorthand, and must be explained. Usually there is a legend, or box showing the meaning of each symbol. Each symbol can be decoded quite easily on the map once you have located the legend. Some travel maps are more detailed than others, giving every street name and main building, while others show only hotels, restaurant and entertainment sites. Still others are more historically and culturally focused, so may leave out necessities and expand on the points of interest. The decision about what is shown on any given map is normally determined by the cartographer and publisher, and is often about their own particular style than it is of convention.

For the traveler, most travel maps that they will choose will either be topographical or thematic, or a combination of the two. Topographic maps shown the general ‘lie of the land’, featuring physical features, type of terrain, location of water sources, forests, marshes, roads, railways, and other lines of communication, be they man-made or natural.

What are thematic maps? These are trekking and tourist maps. While trekking maps give trekking routes covering rivers, canyons, ridges and settlements on the route, tourist maps are quite different. A tourist map depicts main roads, frequently used sites and walks. Museums, beaches, main cities and picnic areas–can be found on a tourist map. They are not really concerned with showing geographical areas in detail. The trekking maps act as guides for well-known routes. If the adventurer wants to go off into unknown areas, he is advised to choose a more detailed map.

The music industry is coming to the realization that music search engines are actually good for their sales as users will always want a real copy of the music they really like without fear of buying something they are unfamiliar with.
