How to Photograph Pets

by SFXsource

You have probably been wanting to photograph your pet but are not sure how to get started. You don’t want ordinary photos, and that is why are you reading this article. These tips are meant to help you take awesome photos of your pet.

1. Photograph your pet in natural light. Either use light coming in from the window, or take them outside. Flash photography and animals do not go well together. The flash could scare your pet, and it also causes red-eye.

2. Put yourself on the same level as your pet. You can either lie down or crouch. You will appear less intimidating, and you will also get a different perspective of your surroundings. Many times pets will investigate your camera, making for a very cute photo.

3. Take the time to learn about your pet’s personality and unique ways. By knowing more about them, you will have more fun and it will be easier to photograph them.

4. Try switching out lenses, using different shutter speeds, or different aperture settings. A wide-angle lens lets you fit more pet into your picture, a macro lens lets you get closer, a fast shutter speeds catches your pet in motion, and a smaller aperture creates a blurred background.

5. Remember to be patient. At first your pet may be uncomfortable, but as the photo shoot progresses, they will be less shy of the camera. You want to make sure that your pet is not uncomfortable or anxious; if you are calm, they will be calm.

6. Expect the unexpected. You never know when you will get a good shot because pets are unpredictable. Try photographing them with their favorite toy, enjoying a treat, or frolicking in the park.

Have fun with your pet! Now you can display photographs of your furry friend looking like a rock star. Check out pet magazines or photos online for more ideas.

Mascots Make an Impact on Sales

by Amy Nutt

Have you ever wondered why companies use mascots to promote their products? What about schools or sports teams that have prominent mascots to bring awareness and inspire fans? Mascots are an important part of our culture and a very effective sales tool. Read on to learn more!

What are Mascots?

Mascots are characters used to bring good luck or popular exposure to a team, organization, or school. They are used to help advertise products, promote school spirit, raise awareness about issues, and for many other purposes. You might have seen a mascot in any of the following situations:

- Representing military units – Drawing attention to a product or service – Supporting a school or professional sports team – Acting as a goodwill ambassador for a cause

Mascots can take a variety of forms, including inanimate objects, logos, people, and live animals. Most people are very familiar with costumed characters as mascots.

History of Mascots

Before the term was popularized in the late nineteenth century, “mascot” was used to describe any kind of good-luck item or person. The term is little changed today, but it is more specific to an item or person representing a particular cause, company, or organization.

In the middle of the twentieth century, sports teams began to choose animals or characters to represent their team spirit. Costumes were created, and these characters began to inspire fans and promote the team.

Today, mascots are used to represent businesses as well as schools and sports teams. Some great examples of companies using mascots are the characters used to promote breakfast cereals. Characters like the rabbit used to sell General Mills’ Trix breakfast cereal seem to stick in the minds of children and adults alike.

The Public Face of Your Company

Finding the right mascot can have a dramatic effect on your company’s ability to sell to consumers. Your product or service is much harder to forget if it represented by a dramatic and memorable character.

Finding the right mascot for your company isn’t always easy. It should be directly related to your business in some way. Do you manufacture ice cream? A cow would make a great mascot. Give some thought to these considerations in choosing the public face of your company:

- What kind of image do you want to present to your customers? If you want to present a fun-loving attitude, a playful mascot would work best. If you’re more interested in presenting an image of powerful excellence, you might be better off with a fierce animal mascot.

- Who exactly are your target customers? If your target audience is young children, you might want to stay away from scary mascots. On the other hand, if you are targeting adults, something too silly might alienate some potential customers.

- How will you be using your mascot? Do you plan to have your mascot meet people and represent your business at trade shows or other industry events? What about in a mall or parking lot? Make sure the mascot you choose is suited for the situation you need.

Should You Choose Stock or Custom Mascots?

There is one final consideration in choosing the best mascot to represent your company or organization and increase sales and exposure. Don’t forget to think about whether you need a custom mascot. Stock mascots are perfectly suited to many situations. With so many choices, it’s unlikely that you’ll run into someone with the same mascot.

However, if you know you will be getting a lot of exposure from your mascot, you might be better off with a custom mascot. Knowing the representative of your business is as unique as the company itself can buy you peace of mind during large conventions and trade shows.

Is Erotic Massage Legal in all Countries?

by Amy Nutt

In most of the United States, erotic massage is considered a form of prostitution, and is therefore illegal. Massage as a practice in the US is heavily regulated by respective state boards, almost all of which prohibit any act deemed inappropriate for a therapeutic setting. For example, Section 29.1(b)(5) of the Regents regulations on massage practice in New York state prohibits “immoral conduct,” which is defined as massage of genital areas and massage of a client who is not properly draped for massage, or by a massage therapist who is not properly dressed.” A licensed massage/bodywork therapist is, in fact, required by law to stop practicing the moment he or she suspects that the client would like something more than a good neck rub, shoulder work, etc. While there are erotic massage services available, they advertise discreetly, and rarely mention the full extent of their services.

However, as these regulations are mandated on a State level, there is an exception. The state of Nevada allows (but seriously restricts) brothels, and thereby, some establishments there are known to offer erotic massage services. In addition to this, local newspapers will advertise the availability of escort services and “sensual massage” which, most likely, mean some sort of erotic contact. In addition to this, Canada, depending on province, allows certain forms of prostitution and erotic massage. One can find any number of “massage parlors” licensed or unlicensed in Canada. The unlicensed parlors, as they typically do not employ licensed therapists, offer specifically erotic massage.

Outside of the American continent, an array of erotic massage services, are legal to the point of being regulated industries. Amsterdam is famous for its red-light district, which includes not only coffee houses in which one can purchase and consume marijuana, but also legal prostitutes. The Dutch government registers its sex-workers, allows them to join unions, and gives them access to social services. Indeed it goes so far as to require STD testing for the health of the workers and clients. Although recent legislation has put a freeze on the development of any more red-light zones within the country, the sex-industry seems to be alive and well there. One would assume that something like a good old fashioned, and legal, erotic massage would be simple to procure there.

Among other nations, Japan, Thailand, and New Zealand stand out as havens for erotic massage. Because Japanese law is famously lax regarding prostitution, prohibiting only full on coitus, there is quite an array of erotic services available legally. For instance, one can go to a “soapland” club, in which he or she (for a fee) is lathered in soap and ‘serviced.’ The Japanese government actually regulates these and other (non-coital) sex services. New Zealand also openly allows a regulated sex-trade; wherein one can go to a massage parlour and receive any kind of massage service. Similar to the Dutch model, the country attempts to ensure the health and safety of their sex-workers, and ensures that full on prostitution only occurs in licensed brothels.

Of course there are plenty of nations in which erotic massage is highly illegal. Most notably, Chinese anti-prostitution laws have a zero tolerance approach to any kind of sex-work for money, mandating the death penalty for “organizers” of prostitution rings. Apparently, one will not find his ‘happy ending’ in Beijing.

Enjoy Opera: The History of Opera Glasses

by Jim Hofman

If you’re a fan of opera, you know this very special musical genre has a long and storied history. In fact, opera is reputed to have its beginnings in the 16th century. Since then, of course, many things have changed, including the manner in which we enjoy some of these mesmerizing performances.

Opera Glasses: What Are They?

If you’ve ever used a pair of binoculars, you probably have a general understanding of opera glasses. Essentially, they are magnifying devices designed to allow the performance attendee to enjoy a close view of the stage, no matter where they’re sitting.

The biggest difference between binoculars and opera glasses is their focus and size. Opera glasses are designed to give you a wider view of the stage, and are extremely compact. Most styles fit very easily in your pocket or purse, while binoculars tend to be larger and more bulky.

History and Evolution

Not long after Galileo invented the first telescope, optical advances began to surface in European nations. In fact, the development of optical devices and opera almost go hand in hand. In the early 1800′s, opera performances were highly treasured in France and Italy, creating a desire to fully enjoy the classic performances of the day. It was during this period that magnifying optical devices began being used at opera houses.

Not long after, these glasses were viewed as a highly desired fashion accessory. Aristocrats often spend princely sums to acquire the very best, and pairs that have survived to the present day are highly sought after in auctions. It is not unusual to see a pair of opera glasses from the 1800′s fetch several thousand dollars or more.

Opera Glasses Today

While still a fashion accessory in many circles, most people focus on the practicality of opera glasses vs. making a fashion statement. Most users find them a significant improvement over binoculars. Attractive styles are available for as low as $40, although some glasses with special features run well into the hundreds of dollars.

Most frequent attendees do agree on one thing. Opera glasses enhance the enjoyment of a performance, whether it’s opera, dance, ballet, or symphony. And so, the theme continues from the 1800′s to the 21st century. Even those in the inexpensive seats can enjoy a great view, thanks to optical technology. To experience it for yourself, we recommend renting a pair at your next live performance event. Compare the clarity vs. traditional binoculars and make your own personal choice. If you decide on a purchase, there are many styles available, whether you prefer practicality, fashion statement, or anything in between.

Can You Actually Improve Health by Singing?

by Georgia Reader

If any time you feel like singing, whether in the shower, in the car or even in your neighbor’s infamous karaoke night, you must go ahead and sing. This is an ancient art that not only makes you feel good but also reduces your pain, rejuvenates and ensures your well-being and even prolongs your life span. Using your voice for singing and not only for conversations has a number of benefits.

A lot of study and research work show that these studies link singing with decreased blood pressure, reduced stress, and slower heartbeat. When we sing, we generally express deep feelings, which helps us amazingly in reducing the stress level. It helps us unwind, relax, and put our minds off the matter that is acting as a downer on our spirits so that overall, singing helps us feel much better.

It is strongly believed in the medical world that singing is a good aerobic exercise that helps the abdominal muscles, circulation of blood, and the lungs. Singing both with or without music is treated as a therapy for people suffering from many kinds of physical, psychological or emotional illness and traumas. People who have speech impairment from stroke have singing as a part of their treatment as it greatly helps in breathing, communication, and rhythm.

The Alzheimer’s Society believes in the concept of singing therapy. Chreanne Montgomery-Smith organized Singing for the Brain, which was organized especially for dementia or Alzheimer patients. Singing helps foster a feeling of well-being as well as a venue for personal expression that releases stress.

Each section of the brain has different functions, and the side of the brain that deals with speech is dissimilar with the side of the brain that deals with music. There are persons who cannot communicate verbally but can get pleasure from listening to music. There have been some past studies that display results that show that singing helps the immune system and happy, secure feelings.

There are also physical benefits for senior citizens, for example, that will help one feel better in self worth and happiness singing alone or with a chorus. Singing gives people a way to express their feelings and emotions and gives a real purpose to life. The process of singing gives added breathing support, posture improvement, feelings of being relaxed, better mood and increased confidence.

Singing helps calm breathing troubles as that 80% of your singing activity involves breathing. It releases endorphins (hormones that give you a high) into the blood stream, which in turn helps in the recovery for many people. More people every day who suffer from breathing troubles are turning to choirs or singing lessons to improve their well- being.

Singing can be called a therapy, and is being used in some arenas of the health professions. Research has shown that it eases breath support troubles, helps deal with dementia, low self-esteem, people dealing with feelings of chronic despair, and boost the immune system. Singing can encourage a good, vigorous and happy life if done regularly.

Carp Baits For Consistent Big Fishing Catches!

by Tim Richardson

Most anglers who buy baits use them with blind faith because they really do not appreciate what actually happens in the fish that induces them to take a bait into their mouths and in doing so get themselves hooked! Imagine the power of being able to harness this knowledge where applicable. How much do think this advantage over the fish and over other anglers will multiply your catches?

Bait always involves confidence and indeed many anglers constantly doubt their bait because they do not understand how they truly work, except having very limited and even incorrect ideas or impressions about proteins or flavours; as a result, many anglers are negative about certain baits, without even ever having used them personally! Confidence catches fish for many reasons because it makes you fish better and be sharper and more tuned-in and expectant of success, so you tend to do more things right at the right time, more often, but you can all the confidence in the world and still blank because of a lack of knowledge and understanding! Confidence is the thing that sells commercial readymade baits and anglers take second-hand opinions from so-called big-name anglers thinking they will emulate their success using the same bait, forgetting that many (not all) big-name anglers are the most skilled and talented anglers of their generation.

Now you might wonder what all this confidence stuff has to do with actually knowing something useful about vital carp senses beyond appreciating that they like a bit of protein or a maybe have a flavour preference now and again. In terms of flavours, not all are the same! If I suggested that chilli powder can help your bait be detected from greater range by senses involving various specialised receptor cells and specialised canal pits along the lateral line (and in the actual skin of the fish,) this might be new to many.

Science is tricky and seemingly irrelevant for many anglers until they realise the enormous significance that chemicals change in solution with water and many substances are simply not the same in water as air, and fish are experiencing different chemicals all over their bodies and not just on the tongue like humans. Imagine garlic on the tongue; it is mixed with air and saliva, but in mixed just water, garlic produces different compounds and the tastes and smells we experience as humans will be different ones that carp experience. This means that the flavours or pungent smells we might imagine impact on the fish may well not be present in the same form at all, and this might mean that something else is triggering a response from carp, even an internal one where something in garlic is acting to produce thermogenic (metabolism and digestion speeding-up effects for example,) and even have very potent antioxidant and antimicrobial impacts etc.

Carp are turned-on by far more than a vanilla or strawberry flavour combination and in fact often these will provide no response at all as they are not true feeding triggers as such, but some bait substances compensate for this by affecting carp in far more profound ways internally! Science is hard right; well I did an easy test on carp baits today by eating wheat-free biscuits and a wheat free doughnut; all done in interests of science and in the best possible taste! Sometimes there are substances used in foods and baits which are naturally there or added deliberately which induce you brain create the sensation of pleasure so you enjoy them more…

Now when I ate these foods, the bit that made me want another wheat-based doughnut or biscuit after eating the first one had disappeared from the wheat-free products, (and what a surprise and disappointment that was!) This meant that something beyond just taste and smell impacts was involved. Something that effected the release of those feel-good hormones in the brain were gone and I really noticed the difference!

If you apply this to fishing, it is like using a bait with a flavour and sweetener, and fishing next to it a bait with the same ingredients exactly, but with that extra vital brain chemical releasing impact. Which food or bait will catch more fish and which might you go for preferentially?! As it is your brain the makes the decision for your body you may have no choice and you may have noticed that so many people over-eat wheat-based foods and store-up fat as a result despite this being far from a healthy thing to do; it’s natural drug-induced behaviour for sure, even though certain emotions are frequently still involved!

In fact many of the same ingredients are in so many foods that in bulk are definitely harmful to the body, but induce people to buy them. Any carp angler knows that tiger nuts and peanuts for instance also have substances that also lead to this type of behaviour. Whether you term this induced habit-forming or addictive behaviour, it is just as profoundly significant, applicable and powerful when it comes to getting a bait edge over your carp and over other competing baits… This fishing bait secrets ebooks author has many more fishing and bait edges – just one might well impact very significantly on your big fish catches!

USA Opera Companies: Making Opera Fun And Approachable

by Jim Hofman

Opera music and performances have a timeless , storied history worldwide. With dramatic story lines and entrancing vocals, opera has been delighting audiences for over 400 years.

And yet, much like any other musical genre, opera has experienced its ebbs and flows. Despite maintaining an historical popularity, today’s opera companies have battled certain perception problems which have threatened this musical style’s viability with current music affecionados.

Opera in the United States

Opera has been performed in the United States since the late 1800′s, with its American roots traced to the New York Metropolitan Opera. Long popular with Italian immigrants in particular, the style soon reached across the country, with opera companies established in most major cities.

Today, there are over 140 opera companies in the United States. There are challenges appealing to today’s audiences, particularly overcoming the viewpoint that opera only appeals to the elite. Fortunately, many of these companies have developed an inclusive educational approach, and the results are very promising.

One of the historical challenges is that most operas are sung in Italian, which some audiences find as an impediment and off putting, particularly if they have no knowledge of the language. Further, traditional dress codes for opera performances can leave the modern generation feeling excluded. To combat these perceptions, many American opera companies have tackled the challenges head on with a unique sequence of strategies designed to attract new audiences.

Making Opera Approachable

Many opera companies seek to underscore the fascinating story lines of great, traditional operas like La Boheme, La Traviata, and others. Much like a classic movie that can be enjoyed again and again, these operas present timeless stories that are easily identified with all ages. A simple solution to the language issue is English subtitles, now fairly common during performances.

Further, many companies offer a pre performance lecture, which introduces audiences to various characters and introduces them to musical nuances. These lectures are proving very successful, as audiences seem less intimidated and willingly wrap themselves in the story. Also, the issue of dress code is being met head on, with one opera company encouraging casual dress if desired. In an effort to include anyone who may be interested in attending a performance, they state, “We love you no matter what you’re wearing”.

Attracting The Next Generation

Most importantly, opera companies are aggressively reaching out to young, talented singers. Many offer a Young Artists Program, designed to develop the talents needed to perform. These highly sought after programs include training on stage presence, diction, and voice development. Intensive individual coaching also plays a part, with the end result being a starring or supportive role in opera performances.

Many vibrant, attractive budding opera stars have burst onto the scene after completing these programs. These talented young singers attract not only a new generation, but traditionalists as well.

All of these efforts bode well for the future of opera. This traditional musical style is very fortunate to have supportive influencers who recognize the need to embrace and appeal to a new era of music lovers.

Do Singers Have to Use the Head Voice?

by Georgia Reader

What exactly does the head voice mean for a singer? It is a delicately high sound in a woman’s singing voice and a falsetto (high sound) for a man’s singing voice, and seems to reverberate with the sinus cavities of the nose. A singer should build up enough vocal skills so that it will be easier to transition between chest voice and head voice, where the notes are higher.

The higher part of the vocal range is often called the head voice. When you sing at this level, the singer will feel the vibration in their head. This is felt by most singers above the roof of their mouth just behind the vocal cavity like tingling feeling in their throat.

When the singer embarks on trying to use the head voice there can be the transition period called the Passagio. This can occur between the register of notes from the chest voice or head voice, basically from middle to high notes of the vocal range. The pure head register can begin all through the middle register more so after the passagio—which will become more pronounced and the singing will feel very differently.

Breath is not resisted because there are fewer folds to deal with. The head voice surfaces when the glottis is partially open. After awhile, most singers will get accustomed to the transition of using the chest and the head voice with ease so that it sounds very natural.

If a singer uses the chest voice, the lower notes are sung and the head voice will be the higher notes that are sung. If you place your hand on your chest when you sing with the chest, the vibration will be felt in the throat and the chest. But the right way for singers to sing the chest voice is to purely experience the vibration in the chest area.

With perseverance and patience the head voice can grow. Most singers will attempt to sing an octave higher than a pitch in the chest voice to reach the head voice. With the correct breathing method the head voice can develop successfully.

If you practiced learning the head voice accurately, there should be slight or no tremor in the throat area. Most of the time, it can be fairly tricky for someone to identify a tremor when singing with the head voice. Keep in mind that you can position your hand on the forehead to feel some shaking or tremor.

If you are taking voice lessons as a beginner, you may be classified in a temporary voice category that may not really describe your voice. Some singers think that since they can’t sing the high pitches they may be an alto, for example. But in truth, they may not have studied the correct method to reach the head voice, so that after they do learn the head voice, they may be eventually classified as a soprano.

Quick Tips for Black and White Photography

by SFXsource

While taking photographs in color is often a common choice, black and white photography often affords interesting results. The following points are quick tips for black and white photography.

1. There are a number of different file formats [negative sizes are listed]: 35mm (1″ x 1″), medium format- 120 (2″ x 2 “), and large format (4″ x 5″). Beginning photographers generally use a 35mm SLR (single-lens reflex) camera. This type of camera lets the photographer view and focus the subject directly through the lens.

2. There are different film speeds for different situations; film speeds are rated by an ASA (American Standards Association) number. For brightly lit subjects, a slow film such as 32 ASA is used; slow film produces fine grain negatives. Outdoor photographers will typically use a medium film speed such as 125 ASA, and that produces medium grain negatives. A fast film speed, such as 400 ASA is best for indoor use, and produces coarse grain negatives.

3. You can control the amount of light entering the lens by changing the aperture. F-stop settings are a measurement of the size of the lens opening. Small F-stop numbers mean a larger lens opening, allowing more light in. Large F-stop numbers mean a smaller opening, allowing less light in. Typical F-stop range: 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22.

4. Focal length is a measure of the lens size, measured in mm. For a lens with a longer focal length, the angle of view is narrower. A short focal length has a wider angle of view. The following are lens types and their focal lengths: normal (50mm), wide angle (21-35mm), and telephoto (105-300mm).

5. The shutter speed determines the time the film is exposed to light. The faster the shutter speed, the less time light is exposed to the film. A slow shutter speed means that the film is being exposed to light for a longer amount of time. The following are shutter speeds: B, T, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30, 60, 125, 250, 500, 1000. You can determine the time the shutter is open by placing a 1 over each number to get a fraction. For example, 2 means the shutter is open for on half of a second

6. The B stands for bulb, and the T stands for time. Bulb means that the shutter will stay open for the amount of time you are pressing the button down. Time will keep the shutter open until you press the button again.
