I used to think that I had a pretty good TV. It has good sound and what I thought was a good picture. Then one day I was in an electronic shop and happened to walk through the television section. My jaw dropped when I saw how clear the new TVs were, it was practically like looking through a window. I decided that I deserved to have a good picture and approached the salesperson.

Picture Quality and Lower Price

TV flat screens are coming down in price considerably, though they are still slightly more expensive than traditional tube TVs. With so many newer alternatives out there like plasma screens and LCD, regular old TV flat screens are more affordable than ever as they are a pretty long ways from state of the art now. It will probably be a while before the newer technologies become mainstream, and for the time being I’m happy with a TV flat screen.

Costco Has Great Deals

Since consumers are now opting for the state of the art LCD and plasma TVs the flat screen tube TVs have really come down in price. You should be able to afford a nice big one for only a few hundred dollars. Of course, you may need a friend to help you lift it into your house, because it’s still not any lighter. Personally, I opted for the home delivery so I could make the delivery person bring it in.

I bought my last TV at Costco and am quite happy with it. Actually, it was quite a coincidence that I happened to stroll through the electronics department which I normally don’t go through and I saw a model that was bigger than my normal TV and was on sale for a great price. Since I had recently noticed that my old TV was starting to go I thought that it was probably a good time to pick up a new one.

If you’re tired of your old style ‘non-flat’ CRT television and want an upgrade, but aren’t really ready to put down the kind of money you’d need to get an LCD or plasma TV screen, I definitely recommend getting a TV flat screen as an alternative. It’ll look nice and fancy, you’ll notice a definite improvement in picture quality, and it won’t put too much of a strain on your pocket book.

Our family game night was one I looked forward to when I was younger. We all would pull up a chair around our kitchen table, make ice cream floats and play cards. It was a great time together.

Being a busy family of 6, we tended to go our separate ways a lot. So this was instrumental in reconnecting with each other. Because my husband’s family had the same fun times, we decided before we started our family to also implement this activity too.

The problem we soon found was how to find games that everyone could play. With an age span of 7 years, our 15 year old was not so keen in playing Go Fish all the time, nor could our 8 year old play Risk. How do we solve this dilemma?

A Few Ideas

You knew I had some answers, right? First off, a game we were introduced to this summer on our family vacation was a fun family game called Mexican Train Dominos. It was fun, several people could play at one time (which is good in a family of 7) and the dominos rules were easy to learn and follow. One note – the rules that came with our game were different than how we learned how to play. You can find our rules on the website below.

Another choice we too found is Apples to Apples. Unlike Mexican Train dominos, this game takes a bit of explanation of what the clues and the judge cards say and a bit of help with reading the definitions. But there is a Jr. version of this game.

And for Christmas last year, Grandma bought a tile game called Blokus. It does involve some critical thinking skills, but our 7 yr. old was able to pick it up right away. It is only a 4-player game.

All these games are relatively inexpensive and sturdy. Mexican Train dominos, etal are definite must-haves for your family nights. You will enjoy the laughter and memories they will bring!

Over a beer last night, your best friend told you his wonderful news; he will be getting married to the girl of his dreams in a few months’ time. You never thought you’d live long enough to see that happen, for him to take the plunge and settle down.

The idea of being a best man is very appealing. There’s nothing you would rather do for your best bud on his wedding day than dazzle wedding guests with a superb wedding toast and share heartfelt sentiments, but public speaking and you, well those words were never meant to be in the same sentence.

Banish some of the jitters early by focusing on the wedding toast not on your performance jitters. You can talk yourself into panic or you can talk yourself into giving one of the best wedding speeches ever heard. You pick!

Learn from these suggestions on how to make an excellent wedding toast.

- The key to success is starting early and being totally prepared. Do your research by talking with others who have given wedding toasts and check out web sources and library books too. Don’t go with “off-the-cuff” remarks. They simply won’t cut it when the time comes, trust me!

- Learn to like butterflies. Make them fly in formation by embracing and harnessing the energy that fear produces. That extra burst of energy will enhance your wedding toast.

- Just as a Pulitzer novel doesn’t just fly off the screen onto the best- seller list, accept that you will need to write and rewrite your wedding toast. Leave some time between writing and looking at it again. You will be surprised at how you will spot things you need to change. You will know when you have it just the way you want it.

- A bit of laughter, some smiles, these are what you are aiming for when you use humor in a wedding speech. Never tell intimate stories, use crude language or off-color jokes. Never!

- Share how you met the groom, how long you have known each other and one or two of your exploits. Talk about when he introduced you to his bride, how beautiful and talented and perfect for him she is and how you believe their marriage is bound to be wonderful. Make your wedding toast remarks tasteful and sincere.

- Short and sweet. Don’t be tempted to go longer than five minutes max for your wedding toast.

- Practice makes perfect. Practice your wedding toast in front of a full-length mirror and time it, allowing moments for audience response.

- Testing, one, two. If at all possible, find a few minutes before the reception starts to stand at the mike where you will be giving your wedding speech. Get a feel for the room from this point of view. Practice delivering to the audience, using eye contact with a few friendly faces or if looking directly at people makes you nervous, aim slightly over their heads.

- Lift a full glass for the toast. Raise your arm from the shoulder and lock eyes with the bride and groom when you toast them at the end of your wedding speech.

- Hug the groom and the bride at the conclusion of your wedding toast and then take your seat. Job well done!

In the past American families cheered as the animals of the circus did their tricks. Today people are appalled by the treatment of many circus animals and they can no longer enjoy a traditional night out at the circus. Luckily there is a replacement for the old cruel ways, Cirque du Soleil has created an animal free circus that will delight the entire family.

Cirque du Soleil was started in Canada by two street performers in the 1980′s. They tried desperately to build up their performance but nearly went under despite their efforts. Thanks to a government grant the performers were able to continue to develop their show until it started to take off in the late 1980′s. The show has grown from one show with under 70 performers to 15 shows on every continent except Africa.

Basically what those two street performers created was a modern circus with no animals. They combined performance styles from around the world and combined them with lights, music and a central theme that flows throughout each performance.
