Ben Sherman clothing line was born in 1963, but an independent young man. Originally born Alfred Benjamin Sugarman, the young man changed his name and started a new life and a new clothing line; hence Ben Sherman was truly born. The first location of the Ben Sherman line was in Brighton England, but eventually moved to Northern Ireland due to the increase of sales and the craze started by the Ben Sherman button-down shirt. This Ben Sherman shirt started the legacy which has continued strong since its inception, and is looking forward to evolving with the future.
The Mod fad of the 1960′s quickly took to the Ben Sherman shirt. It was new and innovative, and gave them the look that they were trying to achieve, smart, good-looking and a bit tough and cool. The Ben Sherman clothing was quickly adopted by the Ska bands of the day that were taking over the music genre. The Ben Sherman was continuously preferred by those on the edge of society and the rebels. The punk scene dwindled down but the Ben Sherman clothing line was still the working man’s clothes. The roots of the Ben Sherman clothes remained intact as the evolutions of the fashion world continued.
Rock music was evolving again. The rebels of the generation were changing too. Ben Sherman made their mark again by using the indie bands and cutting edge bands to showcase their fashions. Bands such as Oasis proved that the classic Ben Sherman style was still in fashion and the trend continued.
Even today, Ben Sherman is evolving, and now includes women’s clothing as well as fragrances, underwear, sun glasses, and other such items. However, they have never lost their roots and their association with music. The Ben Sherman rebel image lives on and will grow as they expand into more lines and more Ben Sherman clothing. The one thing they will never stop doing though is the Ben Sherman Shirt that started it all.
