Losing Is a Part of Winning
Even if you are one of the best poker players around you still have to lose on occasion. Just ask some of the WSOP winners and they will tell you that losing is part of the process. Whether it is a single hand or leaving a game out of pocket, losing at poker is a rite of passage. Losing may not be a great prospect, but it will make you a better player in the long run.
We can’t expect to win all of the time at anything in life, and seasoned poker players certainly don’t let a few losses affect them. Sometimes you just don’t have the best hand, so you lose. The sooner you accept that fact the less it will irritate you and you will become a better player for it.
What does become a problem however is when people hit big losing streaks. The thing you have to remember is that if you can go on big losing streaks you can also go on big winning streaks.
The important thing is the money. If you are winning more money in the long run then you are losing, you are doing okay. Poker is one huge long ongoing game and money is the only way to keep score. As long as you are winning consistently over a long period, you can consider yourself a successful poker player.
There are a lot more of these kinds of players then ones that win ever single hand. That is because, it doesn’t happen. You have heard the saying that if poker is luck, why is the same guys always at the final table and all that. Well, the same thing goes for this; expect the opposite. If the best player wins every time; then there would only be one winner of every tournament throughout the entire WSOP each year.
As long as you look at poker from the standpoint of your overall winnings, instead of an individual game, you will be better able to measure your progress. For example, you could lose $50 on a game, which would be disappointing, but if over all you are up $500 then it is really no big deal, just a minor setback and you can try to do better next game.
Losing is not always bad. There are some hands that you might lose, that will actually help you in the long run. Sometimes losing a hand is better then winning it. When you lose in a showdown you still get to see your opponent’s hand. Sometimes that information is more valuable then any amount that you could have won in that particular hand.
In some cases, you will need to lose a hand or two just to beat that player the next time around. If you get the right information you may be able to take his money for the rest of the night.
If you just keep in mind that poker is ongoing and that you have to lose to win, your life as a poker player will be much less complicated. There are just so many different factors out there that it is impossible to win all the time. You have to be able to win more times then you lose and fro there the money will come in. Improve when you can improve and be willing to change our style of play. The rest will all fall into place.
