Why Small Dance Classes Are So Important
Dance is a very individual thing and small classes are preferable to large impersonal ones. It is important to find a school that is not just in it for the money but has the student’s success at heart. With this in mind try to find ones that offer small classes of around 7 to 11 students per class.
Small children, especially, can soon disappear in the crowd. They may even feel a bit crowded and not want t attend class anymore. Small classes tend to build a really good environment that is conducive to learning. When they need to ask for advice there isn’t a lot of competition to be heard and there’s still enough individuals to create a dynamic.
For any learning environment, students really need that one on one instruction from time to time. Everyone tends to learn at different speeds, so the instructor needs to be able to give some children special attention when they aren’t capturing the idea as fast as others. A class that is too big will have to make sacrifices from time to time in order to keep the group travelling at the same speed, this means many children are left behind.
Reasons for individual dance instruction: There are a variety of reasons a student might need individual coaching. Here are a few:
They may need the extra help:
Anyone who has ever fallen behind at school will know how easy it is to occur. For whatever reason, many young dancers find that there is a time when they can’t quite grasp a move or even a series of moves. For this situation, individual training will quickly get the child back on track without suffering the embarrassment of not knowing the routine at recital time.
Special part in a performance:
If your child has a special part in a live show they may need some individual coaching to get it just right. This will make sure that they give their best performance and not get flustered about performing. With some individual training they will more confident about their performance and do better.
Learn at a different pace from the rest of the class:
Everybody learns differently. A dance teacher will often need to adjust the pace at which the group is learning to better suit the group. Some young dancers may learn a certain routine faster and others a bit slower. A good instructor knows that this is quite normal and will have factored this sort of thing into their schedule. It’s quite normal and is no sign that any of the children are struggling.
All of these factors are normal and a good teacher will understand the steps required to balance out the classes learning rate. Often the children in the group will support each other, with the dancers who have already grasped the routine helping to teach the others.
