Lurking beneath the floorboards and just around the proverbial corner is the mighty and much ballyhooed Blu-ray disc! Its a powerful new disc, virtually identical to the CD disc were come to know and love. The big difference? They tend to be, wellblue. The only significant difference is in the reading of the laser-encoded data. The reading? Fear not, my friend, come closer and listen. Just as every dog has its day, so too, does every disc have its own kind of reader.

It was the rage some years ago to fashion a massive battle royale between the HD DVD and the Blu-ray disc, it was glaringly obvious that nothing could compare to our azure friend. The best HD discs couldnt hold a candle to the Blu-ray’s data storage capacity or even its audio or video transfer rates. Say you’re Donna Sheridan, a single woman, living on the Greek aisle of Kalokaini, owner of an inn and mother of one 20-yaer-old daughter. You’ve got three different men, all believing they are the girl’s father, and supporting her in absentia. Daughter wants to get married, and she wants a father to ‘give her away’. In her search for her true Dad, she discovers Mom’s diary from more than 20 years ago, and voila! The plot goes deliriously on from there.

With a sound track provided by the members of ABBA, the Swedish pop band of long-standing fame, and a sparkling cast of real ‘characters’, this is entertainment to die for. Mamma Mia! has the music to make you cheer and the comedy to make you roar. Plot and music are combined in a delightful progression, as daughter Sophie looks for her true father (“I Have a Dream”). She tracks down all three of the possible candidates and invites them to her wedding, to her mother’s horror. Mom is trying to keep the men in the dark, but after meeting Sophie, all three join in the conspiracy. Along the way Donna and her friends from way back (Rosie and Tanya, part of the one-time Donna and the Dynamos band) get together to provide some of the highlights of the show (“Dancing Queen”, “Money, Money, Money” among other familiar favorites.)

Mamma Mia! actually originates from ABBA’s 1975 hit of the same name, and many of the other numbers from that release comprise the heat and the heart of both the movie and the stage production. As a note, ABBA is an acronym for the first names of the four band members: Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid. The group was involved in the entire production of Mamma Mia! from start to finish, not only composing the score but even appearing in cameo roles in the movie.

The musical (adapted from the 1968 movie “Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell”) was a roaring success in London in 1999, with ABBA’s Benny Andersson contributing additional music and lyrics. The play has toured world wide to delighted theatregoers in the U.S. and Canada, as well as all over Europe and even Australia. It will be in Mexico soon, and shows no sign of slowing down. It has been cited as “the most successful Hollywood musical of all time”, and when the movie was released, it out-grossed every other film in history in the U.K.

In the movie, Meryl Streep, with Amanda Seyfried as her daughter Sophie, plays Donna Sheridan, the unconventional Mom, with great ?lan. The two make a pretty good team, even if they are at odds on the subject of fatherhood. Donna has been getting support for Sophie from Sam, (and Bill, and Harry), and would just as soon leave it that way. Sophie disagrees, and so do the three men when Sophie unveils Donna’s duplicity. Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard and Colin Firth, as Sam, Bill and Harry all fall into a good-natured plot, and somehow nobody’s feelings get hurt.

The conspiracy and all its complications involve a lot of very funny moments and some very entertaining numbers by different members of the cast, as they get to know one another, form unexpected relationships and re-establish old ones. Life in general is celebrated with dancing, singing and impractical jokes. The majority of the filming was done on the Greek island of Skopelos, with Kastani beach getting most of the action. Pretty hard not to have fun!

ABBA’s music really holds it all together and swings it along, with such crowd-pleasers as “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”, “Thank You For the Music” and “The Winner Takes It All”. Benny Andersson has a cameo role as the fisherman playing piano while the girls show us what “Dancing Queen” is all about. The title song, “Mamma Mia!” as well as “Super Trouper”, “When All Is Said and Done” and others composed just for the musical all serve to keep the action moving with a bounce.

Mamma Mia! is an experience to enjoy, whether you catch the stage production or the movie. It is simply great entertainment, with no regrets to be found anywhere!

You don’t have to love the Lakers, but it’s hard not to when you get to know them. This super-team has gone through some wild swings of fame and fortune, and part of their allure is that they’re still swinging! For sixty-three years they have been up and down in the basketball firmament, and following their career is absolutely fascinating for lovers of the game.

The Los Angeles Lakers history goes back to the time before NBA existed. When the team first came on the scene in 1947 they were the Detroit Gems. The Gems’ performance, however, did not shine, and the team was sold for $15,000. They were moved to Minneapolis and the name changed to The Lakers, since that’s the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. Then a really good thing happened: they got first pick in the draft and won the championship in their very first season as Lakers.

The 1950′s brought major triumphs and major disappointments. Players left or were traded for new ones, coaches came and went, and in general a lot of changes occurred, but out of six appearances in the Finals, the Lakers came away with the championship five times. They were definitely a team to be noticed!

The news really starts in 1960, when the Lakers moved to Los Angeles and kept the name, (even with the scarcity of lakes in the vicinity). During the 1960′s the team gained the legendary Wilt Chamberlain, and in ’62 they made the NBA finals, but lost to the team Lakers fans love to hate, the Boston Celtics.

The Lakers got to the Finals eight times during the 1960′s, and each time they fought a battle royal, but they lost, eight times. Did that faze them? Not so anyone would notice. They won 33 consecutive games in 1971, a record which still stands in every major professional sport. During the rest of the ?70′s, aside from the excitement the team never failed to bring to the games, a couple of events stand out. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and later Earvin “Magic” Johnson were added to the mix of players, and TV commentator Pat Riley was hired as assistant coach. Riley moved up, of course, to the head coach position, and what a marvelous job he did!

Early in the 1990′s the Lakers ran into Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls, much to their chagrin. They were aced out of a championship in ’92 by the Portland Trail Blazers, and again in ’93, this time by the Phoenix Suns. Magic Johnson tried coaching for a while, but it wasn’t his forte, and he stepped down, to be replaced by Del Harris. But wait for it! During off-season in 1996, the Lakers signed free agent Shaquille O’Neal, and traded for rookie Kobe Bryant. The team’s fortunes went up and down again during the rest of the 90′s; some days they played poorly, some days brilliantly, but almost always put on a thrilling and dramatic performance.

The turn of the century marked another turning point for the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2000 they moved to their new home at the Staples Center, where they still reign (though they share the space with other teams) They also got a brilliant new coach in Phil Jackson, and a new system they call the “triangle offense”. The drama continued unabated, and Shaquille O’Neal won his third consecutive Finals MVP award. Phil Jackson earned his ninth head coach championship, but was retired from the Lakers and replaced by Rudy Tomjanovich. He came back, however, when Tomjanovich resigned in the middle of the season.

Through 2008 the team kept having internal strife, not least with Kobe Bryant threatening to forsake the team due to personal disagreements. The word is that some helpful ?bonding’ went on during training camp in Hawaii, when Lamar Odom hired a special chef for the teams’ meals. Maybe that didn’t make a big difference, but something certainly keeps this team out there winning!

The Los Angeles Lakers have gone through some “glory days” and some fairly dark nights; key players have suffered injury or just dissatisfaction and gone elsewhere, but sometimes returned, and coaches have been both mediocre and superb. This team has a lot of history, and it’s all fascinating. The bottom line right now is: the Lakers just keep on winning!

Get yourself some tickets to see the Lakers at home, and join some starry company.Maybe the proximity of the Hollywood Hills has something to do with it, but fans of the Lakers don’t seem to care too much where they sit at Staples Center. The founder of the Pantages “empire” was born Pericles Pantages, but having great admiration for Alexander the Great, he changed his first name, not without some evidence of foresight! His first theatre was built in 1914 in Winnipeg, Manitoba for the showcasing of vaudeville acts, and Alexander Pantages the Greek entrepreneur began his Vaudeville Circuit.

Before he stopped building, there were 500 Pantages ‘playhouses’ on the circuit, ranging from Canada to the whole of the United States west of the Mississippi River. Most have fallen into neglect and decay, but a few shining examples carry on the Pantages name. In Minneapolis in 1916 the Pantages was the first public building in the city to be ‘air conditioned’, with ice as the coolant. For future reference, this one cost about $15,000 to build! Among the few that have survived in splendor through the economic swings of the intervening years are the theatres in Toronto, Canada and in Tacoma, Washington.

Of the four main survivors of the old “Vaudeville Circuit”, the Pantages Theatre Los Angeles may be the grandest of all. It was the last to be built by Alexander Pantages, and is an outstanding example of Art Deco design. Like all the other Pantages theatres, it started out as a venue for vaudeville. The first shows presented were a mixture of live acts and first run movies. Also like the others, the Los Angeles Pantages was forced by financial concerns during the Great Depression to economize by offering only movies, with just an occasional live act.

After Alexander Pantages’ infamous rape trial in 1929, he lost his empire in one fell swoop. The Los Angeles theatre was sold in 1949 to his biggest rival, RKO, and Howard Hughes moved his offices into the second floor. Through the 1950′s the Academy Award Ceremonies were hosted in the grand and glitzy landmark. For years it was a major venue for ‘road show’ movies. In 1977 it closed as a movie theatre and re-opened the next month with a stage production of Bubbling Brown Sugar, and it has operated mainly as a live theatre ever since.

The Los Angeles Pantages Theatre is a world-famous example of Art Deco architecture, and it is capable of hosting theatrical extravaganzas as well as rock concerts and, of course, the star-studded Academy Awards. The interior d’cor alone is enough to elicit awe-struck admiration. Since its operation was taken over by the Nederlander Organization, more than $10 million has been invested in re-creating and improving the original grandeur and comfort of this Hollywood landmark.

The initial investment in the building of the Los Angeles Pantages was about $1.25 million, and the performance of Disney’s The Lion King (from 2000 to 2003) made $142 million in ticket sales! Not a bad investment, it would appear. The allure of the Pantages, aside from the entertainment on stage, is born of its stunning architecture and palatial d’cor. It is pretty close to the very height of flamboyant luxury.

The theatre has been host to many of the most spectacular and thrilling performances, both theatrical and musical, that the world has ever seen on stage. It is a favorite location for the filming of movie scenes, and has even hosted rock concerts. It also has the prestige of having been the site of five of the highest-grossing weeks in all of L.A.’s entertainment history.

The theatre was originally intended to have 12 stories, with office space on the upper floors. Construction was halted, like many other projects, by the onset of the Great Depression, but plans are underway to complete the design as it was meant to be. Something to look forward to, indeed!
