Reading verse can be a great source of joy or comfort and can serve to express the feelings needed at special occasions. The world’s great classic love poetry reminds us of the power of language, whether it is in a traditional style or something more contemporary. There are many anthologies available with something to appeal to everyone.

The Nation’s Favourite Love Poems was compiled after a national poll of the British public invited them to vote for their most treasured poem. To my mind, writing comedy scripts has an appeal far greater and more universal than most types of writing do. After all, not everyone wants to create a dramatic, serious story, but everyone wants to be funny now and then. I think that most people like to tell jokes and imagine comedic situations, and it is not uncommon for your average guy on the street to dream about stitching these jokes together into comedian scripts.

In reality, of course, there is a lot more to comedy scripts than just being funny. For a script to be truly funny, it has to be woven together well. Usually, doing one gag after another only works for so long. There also has to be a plot filled with compelling characters that the audience genuinely cares about. Just because you write a comedy script does not mean that you can ignore the more universal script requirements. You still have to put together something compelling.

That does not mean that writing comedy scripts is necessarily out of the league of the average person. The most important thing for a writer is to be able to relate, and there are a tremendous number of people who can relate to funny scenes and situations. Good comedy scripts are often based on real-life awkward situations and events that we all go through. Bringing a bit of humor to these issues is one of the best ways to really examine them. Writing or watching a comedy film can really deepen your understanding of some crucial things.

One of the best ways to become a comedy writer is to simply watch and read as many comedy scripts as you can get your hands on. Watching movies is a good start, but it is also important to look at a copy of the script to see what it was to begin with, and how it got transformed into a film. After all, to write a comedy script, you have to think like a comedy writer, and not just like a movie watcher.

This can be a pretty difficult task for some people, but having a movie script in front of you can really help you to do it. When you see a movie, you are seeing the vision of the actors, the director, the cinematographer, and many other people on top of that of the writer. If you were asked to name the three most influential guitarists of the past 40 years I wonder what names you would come up with?

Perhaps you would think of Frank Zappa, or Chuck Berry, or perhaps Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger, or maybe it would be Chet Atkins or Barney Kessel.

Well, all great guitarists, and worthy of recognition, but they would not quite come into my top three choices.

If you asked me, I would chose Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Jeff Beck, although not in that particular order.

Eric and Jeff are still going great guns, but I regret to say that Jimi died in 1970.

So, let me fill you in with some details on these great performers.

The first person that I would like to talk about is Eric Clapton. At the age of 18, in 1963, Eric joined the Yardbirds who at the time were an R&B group, however after just 2 short years Eric left as he did not like the direction the Yardbirds were going.

He then had a brief spell with John Mayalls Bluesbreakers before coming back to the UK to form the supergroup known as Cream, along with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker.

Cream were a great group, truly a supergroup, but in 1968 they broke up and went their seperate ways. It was at this time that Eric formed the band called Blind Faith.

Unfortunately Blind Faith did not last as long as everyone expected, and when they disbanded Eric formed Derek and the Dominoes, and whilst he was with this group he released my favourite record “Layla”.

Sadly, drink and drugs began to take their toll of Eric, and he felt that he had to pull out of the music business, at least for a while.

Happily Eric is now back in full swing, and we his fans are all expectantly awaiting the next great thing from him.

Who would believe that such an immense performer as Jimi Hendrix, the next person I want to talk about, only lived for 28 years? He was born in 1942, and died in 1970, a short life, but what a name he made for himself.

He is considered by many people to be the greatest rock guitarist of all time, and I would not argue with that.

Its hard to believe that this great guitarist was for a time just a sideman to a number of famous names including Little Richard, the Isley Brothers and Ike and Tina Turner, but he did not stay a sideman for long, his talent would not allow it!

Hendrix moved to New York and played in various bars and clubs, and it was whilst he was playing in Greenwich Village one night that he was approached by a member of the British rock group, the Animals.

And it was suggested to him that he head on over to London, and this he did in 1966.

And there he was able to display his talents to the full, a most incredible performer and musician.

Hey Joe was his debut single, and it still sounds great today, and in 1967 he cut his first album, Are You Experienced.

His playing on stage was something which you had to see, to believe. He would play the guitar behind his back, and sometimes he would pluck the strings with his teeth. He oftentimes would smash his guitar against his amplifiers in order to get a certain effect, and sometimes even set light to them.

When you saw a live performance by Jimi, you would never forget it.

When Jimi died in 1970 the music world lost a truly unique performer.

This then brings me to my last choice for top three performers, and that is Jeff Beck, a great musician although much more in the background than Eric or Jimi.

Jeff spent most of his early career playing with various bands including the Yardbirds, and screaming Lord Sutch. He was born in 1944.

After his time with the Yardbirds Jeff set up his own band the Jeff Beck Group.

And it was here that he spent some time with Rod Stewart until Rod moved on.

Can I mention one other great performer that Jeff has played with – Mick Jagger.

In 1989 Jeff won a grammy for best rock instrumental for his album Guitar Shop.

I am pleased to say that Jeff is still playing, and still turning on absolutely electrifying performances. If you haven’t heard him yet, then do so.

Maybe you are new to pastels and do not know how to go about changing your paintings if things go wrong. Other people think they cannot be dealt with! It can be very annoying when unwanted marks will not vanish like they would with pencil marks, but help is at hand. Here are a few things to help you along the way.

However, some things can be done to rectify the situation. Never try to erase with a standard rubber eraser, you will find that it ruins your work. It takes off the surface of your paper and generally damages it.

You need to have only a very feint line remaining. Firstly you have to try and get rid of the pigment. One way is to now use a plastic rubber and dab at the surface. This, for me, has worked quite well.

It is possible you have all you already need, if you have a fresh, white loaf in the house. This will serve you well if it is rolled into a small ball, but if you only have little mistakes to correct I would just try rubbing my finger over them on soft pastels.

Move your finger both backwards and forwards. Hopefully this will not then damage your surface. Another common fact is that people often use quite a stiff brush to remove marks that you may not require.

So now you absolutely hate it! Oh dear, all that I have done is wasted and you feel like crying. Spirits are low. No need really, as you can wash it over with acrylic paint, so that all is not completely lost.

To your surprise, you will find that this works pretty well, but only if it is a good strong heavy grade watercolour paper. It actually makes quite a good tint which to work on, as the paint mixes together with the pastel.

Something is to be said for oil pastels. If you make errors with these, you can adjust them fairly easily. No rubber is actually needed. All you need is some cotton wool and a supply of mineral spirits. I roll the cotton wool into a ball, dampen it with the spirit and simply wipe off the colour.

Believe me this works! You work is fine, as the spirits do not take long to evaporate. You might also like to copy an image. This is easy enough. If you have, say a soft pastel, maybe you like it and have done all you can to it, but you can’t get it right. What would I do?

Get a new piece of paper, wash it with water, then drain it . Now transfer this on top of your painting so it is static. Press your firm hand across it, or even it, it would also be possible to use a sponge if you were careful.

Handle with care, but gently remove the top sheet. Now you should have not only transferred, but also reversed your original. I would personally leave it to dry on a board so that it will not make wrinkles. Ready to start anew.
