The wetsuit is the accessory that symbolizes today’s scuba diving, along with fins and a tank. They have come a long way since their earlier days of suit pioneers like the O’Neill brothers and their Santa Cruz surf suits to being made from a combination of neoprene rubber and synthetic fabrics. Wetsuits today contain a combination of a wide variety of fabric weaves, designs, colors, and different types of material densities. There are loads of brands to choose from, each offering their own unique properties on one of the most important parts of the scuba divers outfit, especially if diving in temperate or moderately deep waters is planned.

Wetsuits and It’s History

Wetsuits were first made from rubber skins and were worn to keep in heat and for skin protection. More advanced suits made of neoprene, whose cellular construction traps air and water to be heated better than simple rubber. These more advanced suits were made possible by early designs of the rubber suits. However, although neoprene is more flexible, the earlier versions of wetsuits made from it were easy to rip and very hard to put on, putting it on often required applying talcum powder to the inside of the suit. As several generations passed, new breakthrough lines such as the Sharkskin and Turtleskin brands added a whole new layer of nylon sheeting to the inner suit and a textured surface which increases strength and durability.

Combinations of Lycra or other synthetic materials are used in modern wetsuits to replace the nylon sheeting. Brands such as the Pinnacle Aquatic lines feature combinations of titanium weaves and natural merino wool which increases durability, warmth, and reduces odors. Layers of thicker material are also used in these modern suits to protect the sensitive neck and spine areas, and contain reinforced knee and elbow pads to protect the diver against chafing against rocks and coral heads.

The Way They Work

There is one basic principle of the wetsuit; water flows into small pores of the neoprene foam of the suit where it is trapped, it is then warmed up by the body heat and energy of the diver. This layer of warm water then acts as a thermal suit by keeping the cold water from getting to the skin. Wetsuits are actually designed to let water come into contact with the skin, unlike the dry suits which are sealed to keep water out. When temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees, the average dive temperature, wetsuits are preferably used because there are hardly any intense temperatures for the body to be protected from. Dry suits are used for low exceedingly low temperatures to protect the body from potential freezing.

Types of West Suits

Besides the well known full suit, there are many different types of wetsuits available. The Shorty suits do not cover the entire leg and arm areas but only the torso. These suits are best for warm water conditions. The “Farmer Johns” has a thickened “pants” layer that goes up around the shoulders, but doesn’t cover the arms; this type is good for surfing applications where knee protection is important. Now there are specialized “thin suits” for competition swimming and light dive applications. These suits offer streamlining and abrasion protection more than they do temperature control.

Wetsuit Hoods

Since over 25% of body heat is lost through the head, hoods are a very important accessory to a full wetsuit. Hoods are often made of similar materials to a wetsuit, but are somewhat thicker to prevent loss of heat around such a sensitive area. Most hoods have long “bibs” that tuck within the neck of the wet suit to protect against a gush of cold water down the neck.

Booties

Even though some wetsuits commonly have built-in feet, most use separate booties. These booties are drawn up over the legs of the wetsuit. To facilitate standing or pushing off against the bottom of rough surfaces booties are usually reinforced and corrugated.

The Gloves

Gloves are another important accessory and are not only meant to protect against cold water but they must also stop sharp coral and rocks from injuring the skin. In order to help in handling other gears and objects underwater, gloves often have textured fingertips.

Actress Angelina Jolie is the hottest woman in Hollywood. I can’t expect you to know everything there is to know about her, but I’ll be happy to bring you up to speed about the things you don’t. Whenever your start something new you are probably a bit apprehensive, therefore, what I have here, is a few pointers to help you. Firstly, go out and buy yourself a cheap, fibre tipped pen (preferably a black one). This should be ample for your needs.

They are so easy to carry around and will achieve many different strokes. Depending, of course, on how much pressure you apply to the nib itself. As for subject choice to draw, probably something small to start with. Leaves are good for the detail, eggs, pebbles or stones from the garden or beach, even shells. Anything like this would do nicely.

What about form, texture and cross hatching. If you lay a few marks down, dots, small dashes and basic lines, you have a bit of form. Marks close together will make the sketch look a bit darker, but for real darkness cross hatching is the answer. Remember the effects are influenced by the pressure on the pen.

Cross hatching can intensify your work. What actually happens, is you actually draw one set of lines and continue by drawing more lines the opposite way across it, making it much, much darker. Other effective results can be made by giving a feeling of roundness. If you have a crevice on any curve and you make it dark, but then lighter, as you come away from the curve.

How about adding a wash to your work! Pen and Wash, you will find, works well on quite a few types of paper. Pens are okay on smooth or shiny surface paper. Washes look good on heavier grained papers.

We must bear in mind that light bounces off white paper. Now if you do not want to block out the lines of your paper, be sure to only do a thin wash. Preferably using small paint blocks, diluted with water.

Using block paints has many advantages, as with the palettes available today, they fit nicely into the slots, you can mix paint too and have it accessible to work quickly. The paints can be easily replaced too. Should you be using pens that are soluble in water, they may actually run into your wash, but you may find that you like it!

So it is not disastrous if one colour runs in to another. We have all been there intentionally and by mistake, but often it turns out to be an enhancement. If you do have a problem it will not be rectified by more layers of paint. This paint being translucent, problems may not be easy to fix.

If you want to try, please wait until your work is dry, then, with a light touch, use one of the grainy type of ink rubbers. If you rub hard, it is likely to spoil your surface and completely mess up the ink and paint. So do be careful and do leave some contrast by not covering all the white paper.

Hanging posters on the wall starts as a teenager but needn’t stop there. With a quality frame, a print or poster can look classy in the right setting. Framed movie posters are very popular, whether to remind one of a favorite film or to set a mood in a room. In addition to homes, they are bought for restaurants, nightclubs and other businesses. They come in all shapes and sizes and some are reproductions of the original posters of classic films, going back to the 1930s.

Buyers can choose by genre or a certain actor, actress or director but it’s also possible to browse through the most popular buys. These framed movie posters tend to be blockbusters, cult films or other films that did well at the box office. Some images are iconic and instantly recognizable, such as The Godfather with Marlon Brando as Don Corleone standing underneath the puppet string logo. Clarke Gable and Vivian Leigh, as Rhett Butler and Scarlet O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, embrace in a beautifully reproduced black and white photograph. The original publicity poster for Casablanca is still available, showing Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, standing defiant and cheek-to-cheek.

Each genre has its share of posters over the decades. Musicals include the classic Wizard of Oz, shown every holiday but we never tire of it. Posters show Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion and the Tin Man looking for the Yellow Brick Road. Other musicals include Singing in the Rain, My Fair Lady through to Saturday Night Fever and High School Musical.
