Anyone who is new to art would probably wonder about this. Naturally it is an important consideration, according to the type of paint you use. Watercolour paper can be bought in three varieties. “Not” (Cold Pressed), “HP” (Hot Pressed), and Rough.

“Not” or “Cold Pressed” for starters, when it is made, runs through cold rollers which presses the surface smooth. This would be a good paper to begin with, as it is not loaded with texture.

If you have small detailed work, a textured paper really is what you need. “HP” would be my choice as it is nice and smooth as it has been pressed through hot rollers, like an iron in fact. Washes do not hold very well on this, so I wouldn’t even try to do one.

Rough is a very well textured paper which can be very effective as the paint does not always reach the raised surface. Probably not good for a beginner to use though.

You can also stretch paper yourself, but you need to know how. If paper is wet, it does stretch, but not usually so that it will be equal the four ways. So you can have problems with wrinkling!

Therefore, if you stretch your own paper, before you start, this will eliminate the problem. For this you will require scissors, a bowl of water, a natural sponge and some gummed brown paper on the roll.

So, first look at your paper and cut four pieces off the gummed paper larger than the sides of the paper to be stretched. You then need to wet your paper using a small sponge or, if it is small, soak the sponge in water.

Starting from the middle you need to gradually flatten your work out on a flat surface or board. This can be done with a clean rag or even the side of your hand. All that you need to do then, is to tape the paper down with the gummed strips. You will need the gummed paper moist for this.

Probably you will be thinking to yourself it still looks wrinkly, but have a little patience. Let it dry, and I do mean naturally, and it should dry flat. So now you have your support (this is what we call the stretched paper). Ideal paper for watercolours.

All importance is with your actual support, as you want your paint to adhere to it. Also, your brush has to work well with the paint to get good results. Therefore heavy papers are a good choice, but at a price. All paper goes by weight when it is sold.

The aim of your work is for it to have a decent finish to it and the transparency of watercolours can make it a bit puzzling at times to use. In fact, if you have white paper it will always, and you will need to be aware of this, be the lightest part of your work. So yes, the support is vital.

Papers used are important. If you use a heavy paper, water works very well, but then again, this is expensive. Lighter papers are more than likely to wrinkle and get out of shape. Bear in mind all paper is graded by weight.

Various choices are are at hand in our shops. Ready stretched pads which have glue all round. Ready perforated and spiralled pads with hard backs, or simply just sold by the sheet. These are what you have to choose from for watercolours.

I have put together a sampling of the movies released this year (2008). I have chosen a few of the motion pictures I found entertaining in this years crop. I hope you find a picture or two that are worth watching.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: I guess it was a typical night out in Vegas. Young partiers Joy and Jack get up the next day and find out that they are married. When they win a $3 million jackpot, the question is who should get the money, so they ask a judge for a decision. It is decided that the two must stay married for a few months, and see if they can settle their differences. With an eye on the jackpot, they each try to get the other to give up, as both desire to get the money for themselves.

WANTED: A young, bored, office worker named Wesley discovers that his long lost father is a professional killer. His father is killed, and now he is being recruited into the group of assassins that his father was a part of. He now will become the professional killer that is in his blood. From there, things get complicated, and many twist and turns follow. Enjoy the ride.

THE DARK KNIGHT: In this film Batman, and Lt. Gordon and D.A. Harvey Dent, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. Things are going very well, but now a new super criminal arrives on the scene, and things get a lot worse. Now, Batman really has his hands full, as the Joker is dispensing his criminal insanity on Gotham City.

TWENTY ONE: Twenty One basically recounts an amazing true story about M.I.T. students who created a team of blackjack players that beat the casinos. These wiz kids learned to beat the game, and then performed a ruthless attack on the tables. To beat the games in Vegas, where players can be banned for winning with card counting skills, they created false identities, and used complex signals to avoid detection. This movie is based on the best selling book that explains how these kids made millions playing blackjack.

10,000 B.C.: This movie takes us back 1,000′s of years. When mysterious warlords from another tribe invade the Yaghai tribe, they kidnap the beautiful Evolet. A strong young hunter, D’Leh, who loves Evolet, leads a group of hunters to pursue the warlords, and rescue Evolet and the others.

Jumper: Nearing death by drowning, David realizes something incredible. He can transport himself to any place he wants to go, at any time. Eventually, he discovers that there are others with this capability. After years of “jumping” around the planet, he finds out that there are those that want him, and all the jumpers wiped out. He must fight for his life, as the hunters try to track him down.

WALL-E: This picture is a science fiction adventure in animation. Mankind has left Earth, since it had become a pile of rubbish. Waste removal robot, Wall-E, has been left to clean up the mess. When Eve, another robot, arrives looking to see if the planet can sustain any life, Wall-E is finally not alone. When the spaceship returns for Eve, Wall-E sneaks aboard, and starts an incredible adventure.

THE CHRONICALS OF NARNIA, PRINCE CASPIAN: It’s only about one down the road in “real” time, when Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are teleported back to Narnia. Prince Caspian has blown Susan’s magic horn, in a desperate plea for help. 100′s of years have passed since they left Narnia, but the four legendary characters have be summoned back to rescue Narnia from an evil fate. With the support of the bravest in the forest, including, a dwarf, the centaurs, and a very skilled mouse, they battle to free Narnia.

BOLT: Bolt: This film is a fun animation. The star is dog actor Bolt, who plays the role of a dog that is a super hero dog. The thing about Bolt is that he is convinced he has superpowers. After he is unexpectedly put into a real life situation, he discovers that he is only a normal dog. Needing to find his way home, he finds help, in the form of Mittens, the cat, and Rhino, the hamster.

THE LAZARUS PROJECT: Ex con Ben Garvey seems to have gotten his act together. With a loving family, and steady paycheck, life is going in the right direction. Then, he inexplicably loses his steady paycheck, and he finds himself heading back into the criminal world. People die during an attempted robbery, and he is sentenced to death. He expects the lethal injection to kill him. Instead, he regains consciousness only to find himself in a mental hospital. He now fights for his sanity, and his spiritual well being.

LINEWATCH: Well likes Michael Dixon is a boarder man in New Mexico, and life seems to be good. Soon his past is going to threaten his future. A long time ago, he was in a vicious L.A. gang, that he somehow got away from. When a chance encounter gives away his location to his old gang leader, he and his family are in great danger. He is forced risk it all, and work with the gang to bring a big drug shipment into the U.S.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK: This movie tells the tale of Dr. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton), who has become the Incredible Hulk because of being hit by gamma rays. This movie tells of the marvel comic character the green Hulk. Stars include Edward Norton, Tim Roth, William hurt, Liv Tyler. Louis Leterrier directs this film. This movie would be considered a thriller.

DECEPTION: Jonathan McQuarry, a bored and lonely corporate auditor, has a chance encounter with corporate lawyer Wyatt Bose. It is a meeting that will change his life. He is introduced to “The List”, which offers a decadent sexual ecstasy. However, he is also led into a scene full of deceit, underhandedness and death.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH: Trying to find his brother, science professor Trevor Anderson travels to Iceland that leads him to the center of the earth. This is a remake of the 1959 film, which was about the classic work by renowned author Jules Verne. This sci-fi adventure stars Brendan Fraser, and Anita Briem.

THE HAPPENING: Elliot Moore, along with his wife and some friends are leaving Philadelphia by train. The northeastern U.S. has been thrown into chaos. People have been overwhelmed by some unknown malady, and are committing suicide. Can we overcome this problem, or is this the end of man?

IRON MAN: Super stud, engineering expert, Tony Stark is captured by insurgent fighters in Afghanistan. They demand him to make missiles for the insurgent group. He was hurt when he was abducted, and has metal in his chest. To save his life from this injury, and make his get away, he designs a suit of armor, which makes him virtually invincible. Iron Man is born.

SPEED RACER: An anime-cartoon gets real actors. Just like the movie The Flinstones, Speed Racer turns a cartoon to a movie with an actual cast. Speed Racer is an ambitious young man who loves racing. His goal is to win The Crucible, a very dangerous race that his older brother had died racing in. With no one expecting him to win, and the future of the family business at risk, he surprisingly teams up with his arch rival Racer X, to attempt to take the title, so the family business won’t go under.
