ARP Odyssey dates back to 1972. It has to be remembered for their alleged theft of the original four pole Moog filter design. Needless to say, it became Moogs competition. It didn’t take long for the ARP engineers to invent their personalised 2 pole filter. Once this is combined with the duophonic then players had the advantage of a additional synth. The sound had to be the most favorite feature as Roland made it super beautiful, thanks to the analog signal path. Programing was a breeze with the knob laden interface. It had a hefty price tag when it came to the oscillators and filters.

Lastly, the Yamaha DX-7 must be noted. Its the 1st time that polyphone, an ultimate key-board and a genuinely low-priced price all came together. What was achievable with their DX-7s frequency modulation synthesis was astounding. Not some thing many famous music star wanted to pass up. Programming it’s slightly of a mystery, but the FM synthesis has never caused quite the same stir since that time. It paved the way for other new synthesis types.

There is no question about it. Sergers are super specialty sewing machines. They empower users to speed up sewing projects, sew stronger seams, secure the edges of fabric, and trim the fabric for classic overlocking stitches. Sergers are a celebrated addition to any sewing center.

It may help to understand what tension is and is not. Tension is not a number on a tension dial. While some tension assemblies are more precise than others, the recommended number on the tension dial is only a guide. Tension is the amount of drag or resistance on the thread as it moves through the tension assembly. Tension balance is the equalization of thread balanced among all the threads being sewn.

To evaluate the tension balance, perform a evaluation sew. Use scrap fabric and sew a seam of four to five inches. Remove the test sew and examine the stitch quality and tension balance.

One of the points of confusion here is identifying what thread comes from where. To make this easier, set up the serger with a different color thread for each thread used. This way, if you use red thread for the, you can quickly and easily recognize the lower looper thread because it is red. Visually inspect the seam. Does the red thread look too tight or too loose or about right. Repeat this process inspecting each thread until you understand where each thread is coming from and how it fits into the stitch formation.

Thread tensions should be adjusted individually. Work on one thread before moving on to the next. Is the thread tight, loose, or about right? Does its tension need to be increased a little or decreased? Follow the users manual instructions and work until all the threads are balanced. Do another serge test, and adjust accordingly.

Notice that the thread from the loopers form the overcasting part of the stitch, while the threads from the needles produce the seaming. Along one side you see the lower looper and along the other side you see the upper looper. Adjust the tensions as needed.

Your serger can use many different sizes and types of threads, yarns, decorative threads, and ribbon threads, however, you must adjust the tensions to accommodate each type and size of thread. The thicker, fluffier, and softer the threads, the less tension they need. The thinner and slicker the threads, the more tension they need. Balance tensions based on how the threads lie in the stitch rather than based on the tension dial setting.

The stitch width may be adjusted on your serger by turning a dial, but each time you adjust the stitch width you must recalibrate the tensions accordingly. If you increase the stitch width setting, it will require more looper thread to properly wrap the edge of the fabric. As a result, you need to loosen the tension on these loopers accordingly. The same is true if you narrow the setting, you should adjust the looper tensions to tighten the overcast. Note in both cases you should adjust both upper and lower looper tensions about the same. Key: Tighten to reduce thread. Loosen to increase thread.

Tensions are significantly affected by the stitch length settings. Increasing the stitch length requires decreasing the tensions. Decreasing the stitch length involves increasing the tensions. These adjustments will normally affect both upper and lower loopers.

Murphys Law states than when things can go wrong the usually do. When it comes to sergers, speed and snags often cause problems even when everything else appears to be properly adjusted. Slowing down can sometimes help. Smoothing rough spots or otherwise eliminating snags can restore an even thread flow.

When all is set and balanced, it is time to serge. First, however, clear the stitch finger and pull the threads under the presser foot and behind the needles. This will reduce bunching up and jamming.

Breaking threads are indications of threading problems and adjustment problems. Rethreading is the most common solution. Reducing tension on a particular thread, elimination of burrs, and clearing the stitch fingers before you begin serging often help. Learn your serger and serge within its capabilities. Do not try to make the serger do things for which it is not designed.

One of the most action packed genres in the cinema is Martial Arts movies. They have an avid following, whether they are big budget Hollywood features or low budget cult films. The Hong Kong produced films are well known and they inspired American and European enthusiasts to make their own films. Some actors have got into Martial Arts and used it for their career and some Martial Arts experts have become involved in the movie industry.

The major stars of the genre are heroes to the fans. Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li each bring their own personality and fighting techniques to the story. Western stars Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal further popularized the films. What started as a cult, crossed over to the mainstream and spin off merchandise, such as posters is big business. Disciplines such as Karate and Kung Fu gained lots of recruits who had been turned on by what they saw in Martial Arts movies.

The most influential exponent of Kung Fu and martial arts in general was undoubtedly Bruce Lee. Born in San Francisco and raised in Hong Kong, he was handsome and had charisma in addition to perfecting an explosive fighting style. He put great emphasis on fitness. Sadly he died at the young age of 32 and became a legend. His most popular film was Enter the Dragon in 1973 in which he plays a man called Lee, a Martial Arts practitioner who investigates a drug gang. John Saxon co-starred.

The same year brought the release of Way of the Dragon. This Martial Arts movie was unusual in that Bruce Lee was the director and writer. It was also unusual because it was an action comedy. Lee stars as Tang Lung, who visits relatives in Rome and becomes involved in fighting a criminal gang. They need to hire someone to defeat him so they call on Colt, played by Chuck Norris. Norris, a professional Karate champion, and Lee delight the fans with a fight scene against the backdrop of Rome’s Coliseum.

In 1994, Jet Li made a remake of one of Bruce Lee’s films called The Chinese Connection. The new version was titled Fist of Legend and Li played a character called Chen Zen. The story is set in Shanghai under Japanese military occupation in 1937 and involves Chen Zen trying to prove that his old Kung Fu master, Hou was murdered.

Taiwan born director Ang Lee has made many different kinds of films, including Hulk and Brokeback Mountain. In 1999, the release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made a huge impact. This was a Martial Arts movie that incorporated fantasy fight sequences and a love story. It won the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. It showed that this genre could have brilliant cinematography and special effects. The scenery was stunning. Chow Yun Fat stars as Li and Michelle Yeoh co-stars as Yu. Two warriors hunt for a sword with magic properties that has been stolen. Zen warriors are seen to bend the physical world to their will as they float through the air and walk on water.

American pop rock bands are in a competitive market and they have to work hard, touring the world and producing high quality records. Maroon 5 cds have brought the band chart success and a loyal core of fans. They began life in 1994 under the name, Kara’s Flowers, and changed to the current name in 2001. The present members are Adam Levine (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), James Valentine (lead guitar), Jesse Carmichael (keyboards, rhythm guitar), Michael Madden (bass guitar) and Matt Flynn (drums). Three of the members were friends at junior high school together in Los Angeles.

Debut album, Songs about Jane came out in 2002 and eventually had triple platinum sales in several countries. In addition to terrific sales, this Maroon 5 cd met with critics’ approval and won many awards. It was a five-year break before the second studio album was released. Titled It Won’t be Soon Before Long, it went to the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

The band also enjoys playing live and has toured extensively. Artists they have toured with include The Hives, New Found Glory, and Counting Crows. The Maroon 5 cd, Live-Friday the 13th is the album that captures the live sound and atmosphere. One of the most famous concerts that the band took part in was Live 8 in Philadelphia in 2005.

Success in the singles charts has also come to the band. The first single was titled Harder to Breathe and it reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow up was This Love and that hit number 5 in the US. Third single She Will Be Loved was in the Top 5 in the US and the UK. The fourth single, Sunday Morning was a Top 40 hit in the US and the UK.

In addition to the fans’ devotion, the band receives respect from fellow artists for their Maroon 5 records. Call and Response: The Remix Album was released on December 9th 2008 and contains remixed tracks from the band’s first two album releases, performed by various artists and produced by different guest producers. Artists include Mary J.Blige and Rhianna. Producers working on the project include Mark Ronson and Pharrell Williams.

The music industry has also recognized the talents of the band with awards, including several MTV awards. The most prestigious of the awards however are the Grammy Awards. The first of these was in 2005 when the band was named Best New Artist. The following year brought a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Group with a track on a Maroon 5 cd and single, called This Love. Another track, Makes Me Wonder won the same award in 2008.

The band is well known to the general television audience, having performed their Maroon 5 cds on several popular shows. They have appeared as guests on American Idol, Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the chat shows, The Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Getting a new serger can be thrilling, but consider your motivations, desires, and hopes before thinking about price or brand.

Take a few classes where you actually serge in class. Use one of the store machines during class. There are two basic levels of sergers that you should consider. The three-four thread serger is great for utility serging and it will do some decorative serging. Then there are the high end sergers that offer fabulous possibilities. A standard three-four serger will usually produce a dozen serger stitches. High end sergers expand your horizons with many decorative features and stitch capabilities up to 86 different stitches.

Sergers commonly have three challenges: threading, tensions, and timing. Some sergers are so difficult to thread that they virtually guarantee frustration every time you use them. Some sergers fail to provide consistent tensions resulting in a few inches tight, a few inches loose, and a mix in between. Some sergers are fairly easy to thread and do pretty well with their tensions, but the loopers are designed in a way that they go out of time far too often.

Ideally you want a serger that is easy to thread, easy to use, easy to maintain consistent tensions, and keeps working year after year with little or no problems.

The major sewing machine brands all offer some type of serger today. Most have traditional designs with traditional tensions whether surface mounted or under covers. Models vary in features, quality, dependability, and price. Some even have computerized features that are kind of neat.

One of the most popular sergers is the Janome 634D serger. It is a traditional tension based serger that produces about a dozen different overlocking stitches with 2-3-4 thread combinations. It is well known for its dependability.

When I am asked for a recommendation, however, I always turn to the serger industry leader Baby Lock. Since 1964, it has provided the best, easiest to use, most dependable sergers on the market.

The best place to buy a serger is from your local authorized dealer. He will be there with endless support and service. The store will provide classes, clubs, emergency help, warranty service, and much more.

Without instruction, you will not get the most out of your new serger.
