The Grammies
Originally known ad the Gramophone awards, the Grammies are held every year during February to honor those in the recording industry. These awards cover almost 20 genres with more then 100 categories in all. It was first started by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, but since the gramophone is no longer a household item, the name has been changed to what it is now.
In the categories section of the Grammy Awards you have popular awards such as the Artist of the Year or even the Record of the Year. There is also the Best Artist and Newcomer Awards to name a few of them. These awards are voted on through a committee and there are even regular committee members that have been voting on these awards for quite some time such as Prince and Paul Simon.
Based on their expertise, more then 150 people in the recording industry are selected every year to have the honor of selecting and reviewing all of the artists and all of the categories. Though this committee, the nominees for every award are chosen and then passed on to the voting committee who keeps their selections a secret until the day of the awards. The works that are taken into consideration every year has to be released after October 1st two years prior with anything after October 1st of the previous year having to wait until the following years annual Grammy Awards.
For the longest time, the Shrine Auditorium was the home for the Grammy Awards and today it is still the place where the Oscars are held every year. However, because of the expansion to the categories and genres in which the awards are given in, a larger venue was needed to accommodate the guests and nominees. As a result, the Staples Center has since become the home to the annual Grammy Awards.
Every attendee to the Grammy Awards has to pay for their tickets and this includes the nominees. In recent years, one of these attendance tickets would set someone back more then $2,000 per seat and this does not even include the official post Grammy party that is held immediately following the awards. But as an attendee, you get all sorts of great goodies in the gift bag that comes with the seat that can include things like perfumes, CDs and even jewelry.
Since 1971, every year the Grammy Awards are aired live around the country and the nation. It was ABC who originally had the contract for the ceremony, but in recent times CBS has been in charge of airing the live performances. To date, there have been just over 50 annual Grammy Award ceremonies.
While the Grammy Awards have continued to be the largest ceremonies for the recording industry worldwide, there have also been a number of complaints about their processes. Some people insist that the awards focus only on the mainstream artists who are signed with major recording labels. While at the same time other also insists that the recording industry; meaning those who are members of the RIAA have been influencing the votes to improve sales.
