Guitar Instruction Software – You Don’t Need This Perfect Solution to Learn the Guitar Fast and with Minimum Expenses?

by Joey Ratkin

Is taking private lessons the only solution to learn the guitar? Or can learn guitar software provide a very effective alternative? When you ask around, most people seem to advocate either one or the other.

People can state many reasons why one is better; but the results seem to be the same. You either spend a fortune only to learn the guitar basics, or you spend less and end up with a lot of missing information. Now, the perfect solution couldn’t be a combination of these two, could it?

As you are trying to learn the guitar or advance your skills, your focus should not be judging which method is better, but rather it should be to develop your skills in minimum time with minimum resources. And this can be achieved through combination, not comparison.

Although I sincerely believe in the efficiency of online guitar lessons, I really can’t say that private guitar lessons are useless all together. You would most likely need an experienced person -aka guitar instructor- to show you the ropes and to help you avoid certain mistakes. But, as most of us can afford only one lesson a week, this alone would be much less than enough.

And on top of that, if for any reason you don’t get to learn what the instructor teaches you that week, you’ll actually have to spend the next lesson for the same topic, and also the week in between for practicing old drills.

And again, with a simple calculation assuming you take one lesson a week for $40 (which can actually be higher) and considering that to see a significant result you’d need at least 6 months of lessons (24 lessons to be exact), the bill you’d have to pay would be around $960 and most likely higher.

Is it too much? Well, yes! The solution? Actually very simple. You can take a private lesson at the beginning to learn correct posture, left hand positions and certain basics. After that you can switch to online courses which cost anywhere from $20 monthly video courses to complete programs under $50. And then at certain intervals you can take a private lesson once a month or every two months to address any weakness or to sort out anything you didn’t fully understand.

The result? Considering you’d pay $20 per month to a video course, and then take one private lesson each month, you’d end up paying $240 in six months. And you’ll be pleased to see that actually you had the same progress since it’s always you who does the hard work anyway, not your instructors. And then what could you do with $720 you have saved? Indeed, whatever you want!

Trickster Tales

by charlie reese

Mythology has always had a special place in my heart. Ever since I was a little kid, I have loved myth and legend. Unlike many other little kids, I never outgrew them. My favorite ones of all are the trickster tales. I like hearing the exploits of brave heroes overcoming great adversity, of course, but the humor in the trickster tale beats all of that hands down.

Every culture has trickster tales of some sort or another. Both Native American trickster tales and African trickster stories involve a spider. In the Native American stories, the spider is called Inktomi. In African tales, it is called Anansi. Both Anansi and Inktomi stories are hilarious. Some of them are suitable for kids, while others are sort of raunchy. Whatever the story, however, it is sure to delight and amuse.

One of the things I have always found interesting about trickster tales is that they are often involved in the formation of some significant cultural belief or trait. For example, the trickster Loki gave the Norse gods their weapons as a way of appeasing them after one of his more destructive pranks. The weapons of the Norse gods are some of their most famous attributes, so this contribution by the trickster Loki is not insignificant.

Trickster stories are great for little kids. Kids love anything involving smaller, weaker people outsmarting bigger, stronger ones, and that is what trickster tales are all about. They can really identify with the trickster figures in a way that is harmless, fun, and amusing to watch. Best of all, these stories can get them interested in the mythology of other cultures. Since so much of the literature written for kids is mythology, this will help them with their reading skills as well as their cultural literacy.

In a class I teach, I even have the kids write their own trickster stories. At first, I thought they would not be up to it, but it turned out pretty well. The kids were so excited about the trickster tales. They loved being able to turn in a story about some mischievous character outsmarting the authority figures in his or her life. Sometimes, the trickster tale even took place in the classroom. I didn’t mind. As long as they were amusing, I enjoyed reading them. It was good lighthearted fun, and best of all it got those kids writing. You have no idea how hard it can be sometimes to do that.

Foster’s Bar and Restaurant

by Ian Kleine

Up in Rio Vista, California’s central, there isn’t much of anything to cause you to pull over and spend a bit of your meager time. Perhaps if you are hungry, or maybe you need to gas up a bit, but you would be temped to just speed through and get on with your life (and possibly with your journey).

But one stop here is definitely in need of your attention, not for them, but for yourself. Say hello to Foster’s Bighorn Bar and Restaurant, nestled near the roadside.

The bar maintains one of the old-world themes that seem to be lacking in the new century, stuffed animal heads. Yep, these old time pioneer favorites are up in the walls of this bar sans restaurant and is staring down at the patrons with their unearthly gazes. The bar manager, Mr. Bill Foster, had passed on already, around 40 years ago, but current management is doing their job helping and maintaining these priceless pieces.

There are over 300 wild animals, birds and fishes in the bar, all preserved and stuffed. Pictures are also in the board, but this place might not be the best one for claustrophobics. Each head has a short description of the name, with the photos downwards pointing out when and how Mr. Foster had captured them. The stuffing process was obviously left out, no one wants to see that while eating their fare.

The most famous of the lot would be the 13-foot elephant stuffed head with the five-foot tusks. Almost any patron that passes by the bar looks for a chance to sit under this mammoth’s stuffed head. Perhaps, if the overwhelming presence of a large beast is looming over you while you eat improves your appetite, then maybe, the elephant can sure bring in customers.

Even after getting its head stuffed.

Farming the Black Tabby in Silverpine

by Patricia Adams

Are you a big fan of pets in World of Warcraft? Did you know that not only are these pets cute and fun to collect, but they are also a good source of gold in WoW?

Like White Kittens, you can buy these for as cheap as 60s each from Lil Timmy who wanders around Stormwind. White Kittens are limited supply items so they can be a bit difficult to get. But if you do manage to get some of these White Kittens from Lil Timmy, you can sell these for up to 250g in the alliance auction house, and up to as much as 500g if you do cross-faction trading and sell it on the horde side.

Another huge gold-maker is the Black Tabby. You can get Black Tabbys as a drop from the Dalaran Spellscribes in Silverpine Forest. These are level 21 mages which spawn every 4 hours.

The drop rate for Black Tabby is quite high, so its not very hard to farm, as long as you are patient in waiting for the Spellscribe to appear. The way to do this effectively is to have at least a level 20 character so you can kill this mob easily.

The Dalaran Spellscribe will appear at one of 3 spawn points within Amber Mill in Silverpine. The first spot is the second shack to the left when youre standing in the entrance to the compound. The second spawn point is the largest room of the main building that should be right in front of you. The third one is in the building furthest to your right.

This is not as boring or time-consuming as it might seem, you don’t have to sit there all day waiting for the Dalaran Spellscribe to re-spawn. All you have to do is log in every few hours to check, use a macro or type “/target dalaran” to see if he is around. If he is, just kill him and get your loot, log off then back on in 4 hours to repeat the process.

If you keep doing this, youll be able to get 3 or more a week. And like I said earlier, these are very rare items. You will be able to get at least 500g to 600g if you just sell it on the horde side auction house. The real money, however, is in cross-faction trading. If you can sell these Black Tabbys in the neutral auction house or even on the alliance auction house, you will probably be able to make around 1500g to 2500g for each Black Tabby.

So thats really a lot of gold considering its not very hard to get. It doesnt even have to take a lot of patience, because you just have to be consistent in logging in and checking re-spawns.

FM Synthesis Made Easy – Home Music Recording Tips

by Greg Hoffman

Back in the 1980s, Yamaha created the DX synthesizers. Hence, the birth of frequency modulation, which’s what, you hear on the radio. This provided unheard of new sounds that can be utilised by key-board players anyplace.

But that brings to the downfall of analogue synths.Analogue VCOs are unstable which is why dedicated FM synthesizers are digital by nature. Its easy to develop un pitched and metallic tones with the FM synthesis methods, as opposed to the general subtractive sounds.

The modulator oscillator is one necessity for FM synthesis. It uses a sine wave form. And functions just like an LFO as it modulates the frequency pitch of the carrier oscillator, which incidentally is the second key thing essential. The carrier oscillator also utilizes a sine wave form.

Say you set a sine wave oscillator and a LFO on a average subtractive synthesiser you will achieve identical affects. You will need to utilize the LFO to modulate the oscillators pitch at the same time you increase the LFO rate. And then the sound becomes non-harmonic. FM synthesizers lean towards having around 4-8 operators which livens things up. This eliminates the lifeless sound of the operators. You could utilise a technique named as algorithms, which means routing all those complementary operators in unusual and different ways. You could arrange the operators so that modulators one and two go into the carrier. Or, you could send modulator 1 into modulator two, which then goes into the carrier.

This is a compound way of making a brand new wave form. So what you can’t attain with some other types of sound synthesis is the interesting and life-like sounds that you could by using a few operators.

When you switch the carrier operators modulation, the carrier frequency fluctuates up and down. This depends on the depth and rate its set at. What this produces is sideband. Because looking on how it’s modulated is what creates the harmonics that surround the carrier. Most frequently in FM synthesis, the term oscillator is referred to as operator.

Comic Convention in San Diego: The Buyer

by Ian Kleine

The Comic-Con International: San Diego (or the San Diego Comic-Con as it is more commonly known) is a yearly fan convention event founded by Shel Dorf and a group of people from San Diego. It spans to nearly forty years now, having been started during 1970. Traditionally, it is a four day event held in summer at San Diego, California – San Diego Convention Center.

For the buyer who wishes to purchase comics in the convention, think of it as something more of an investment rather than as a hobby. You would certainly know how hard it is for a person to obtain a day pass, how much more for a multi-day pass? Your investment already starts with entering the place. It is not just a market for comics, it also is an investment for the mind.

The event has a lot of activities that would be very helpful for the comic-minded person. Comic book workshops, panels and seminars featuring popular comic book artists, writers, and publishers; also previews of upcoming comics, review sessions with some of the companies, video game previews (video games are considered part of the fantasy literature genre). A crowd-drawer is the Masquerade, a costume contest of different comic book characters. It is like cosplay, in Japanese terms.

The major point of buying in Comic-con is the exclusive collectibles “the one-time items” that the convention is selling. Some of the companies like Hasbro, Mattel and others sell toys and collectibles at the convention that would not be sold again. Most of the exclusives are licensed books and PVC statues of animated and comic characters.

Take note of the things to prepare when buying. Wear comfortable clothes, avoid bringing in too much money (enough for buying, transportation and food) and watch out for your cellphone, iPod or whatever do-hickey you have. Standard procedure for security. Be early as well, and don’t forget to bring your pass so you do not experience hassle in any form.

Betting On Horse Racing

by Simon M Skinner

If you have a passion for racehorses, then you have no doubt considered betting on your favorite horse at one point of time or another. Betting on horses has been a favored pastime for a long time of many horse owners and others who are connected with racehorses. In present times, it has become very organized so that almost anyone and everyone can take part. But, before you put your money at stake, remember that betting on horses is simple yet quite complicated at the same time. Having said this, do not back out now because if you learn all the necessary details and information, you may have the winning edge over the rest.

The basics are easy enough to understand: winner takes all, period. The most important thing to know about betting on horses is that there are two kinds of horseracing bets. There are straight bets and exotic bets. Keep reading to learn more about straight bets and how to make wise wagers on horse races.

WIN BETTING – You place a bet on one horse, which must place first for your bet to pay off.

PLACE BETTING – You bet on a certain horse coming in second (known as place position). Your bet pays off if your horse finishes either first or second in the race. While the payoff is lower than win betting, you have a better chance of winning your bet this way.

SHOW BETTING – You place a bet on a certain horse coming in third (known as show position). If your horse finishes first, second or third, your bet will pay off. Your winnings will be lesser than those in a win or place bet but again, your chances of placing a winning bet are significantly improved.

WIN PLACE BETTING – here you place a bet on your horse to come in first or second. If your horse finishes first, you get both payoffs – win and place. If it finishes second, then you also get the show payoff. Without a doubt, it is great should your horse win first place but even if it comes second, you would be able to get some cash out of your ticket.

ACROSS THE BOARD BETTING – Betting on a horse across the board means your horse has to either come first, second or third. Should your horse come in first, you get all three payoffs – win, place, and show. Should it come in second, you may collect two payoffs – place and show. However, should your horse come in third, you would only be able to collect the show payoff. Here even if your horse doesn’t win, you have a chance of recouping some part of your initial bet.

There are two kinds of exotic bets. There are intra-race bets, where you place bets on more than one horse in a single race. There are also multi-race bets, where your wager is placed on horses in consecutive races which are on the same ticket.

Knowing how straight bets work, you are better prepared to give betting on horses a try. Of course, like any betting horserace betting is a game of chance, so never bet more than you can comfortable afford to lose. You may win or lose when betting on horses, but having good information on your side can help you to make better bets; bets which make you money! If you’re interested in horseracing, now is the time to get to the track and try your luck!
