Twin Towers Falling
Ever since I saw the twin towers falling, I have been haunted by that image. Like many Americans, I felt pretty much invincible up until that point. Our country was the most powerful country in the world, and no strike could hurt us. I knew that we were protected from terrorists, and I didn’t even bother to think about them on a daily basis.
That all changed when I saw the twin towers fall on TV. The falling twin Towers was definitely a scene that would be impressed in my memory forever. I think I shared a lot with the rest of the country in that regard. That image haunts us even though we don’t see it that much anymore. For months afterwards, they were rebroadcast on the television. Politicians made speeches and proposed actions, but none of it meant anything to us. Our invincible empire had actually been attacked by its enemies for the first time. It was the most powerful attack on home soil in the 20th century, and people were understandably distressed.
Since that time, the meaning of the World Trade Center falling has changed a lot for a lot of people. Nowadays, people crave revenge less. After all, we have already gotten involved in two wars, and they haven’t brought the victims of the attack back to life. On some level, we just have to reconcile ourselves to the fact that we were attacked and many innocent people were killed. We can remember the twin towers falling, but we should remember it without bitterness and rancor. Revenge has not helped us, and it will not help us.
Instead, we should remember what we learned on that fateful day. We learned that our country is not all powerful, and that making enemies has its consequences. We also learned that we had to defend ourselves and couldn’t assume that we were safe without an active security force. The fallout from the twin towers falling has still not completely been clear.
Many people think that the long-term consequences will be greater than we can imagine, but who knows. The American economy is already in bad shape because of the war effort, and we have definitely alienated many people in the world. Nonetheless, we have also done some great things. We have courageously defended ourselves from foreign aggressors, and that has to count for something. I just hope that everything ends in peace soon. I would hate to see these wars linger on for any longer than they have to.
