With almost half of the marriages in the U.S. ending in divorce, there are a lot of children who become afflicted with psychological, physical and social problems, which are almost entirely preventable. While you might have tried every avenue of trying to renew your relationship, went to marriage counseling or spoke with your religious adviser, sometimes there’s just no viable answer. Whatever the reasons, sometimes it’s better for every one concerned, including your children, to get a divorce and go your separate ways. When children hear or see their parents fighting all the time, they know you’re both unhappy and they become unhappy as well.

If you find you and your spouse simply cannot resolve your differences, there are a few things you must do to promote a positive outcome for your kids. Children of divorce commonly feel that the divorce is their fault. Unless you handle your divorce in an apparently amicable manner, at least in front of the children, you’re going to fuel a host of problems for the kids, both now and later.

It’s essential that both parents sit down with the kids and make it crystal clear that the situation is not their fault. Let them know that adults are capable of making mistakes, and that both you and your spouse are just no longer able to communicate or get along, due to mistakes on both sides. Perhaps you married too young, before you were psychologically prepared for marriage, or grew apart over the years, developing into your own adulthood, taking different directions. If this is the case, this might be appropriate to mention during your discussion. The most important element of your talk should be to eliminate the blame game. Never bad mouth your spouse to your children. Otherwise, children of divorce often take the blame on themselves, while others blame one parent or the other, leading to some serious problems that will follow them for years.

Children of divorce also commonly feel guilt out of their own feelings of loyalty to one parent or another, which may be simply age related. Young girls may still be more attached to Mom, while older boys might favor Dad’s position, blaming Mom for the divorce. This is why it’s so important to nip such thoughts in the bud. Let the children know that you will both love each of them forever and that you know that they love both of you. Explain that, while you and your spouse will not be living together, you expect that the kids will be sharing time in each of your homes.

Divorce is always painful. You never planned on your relationship ending in divorce. However, you and your spouse are the adults and you must give all of your support to the kids now, if you hope for them to continue with healthy relationships of their own, both with friends and their parents. Children of divorce are so vulnerable. It’s up to you to make this transition to a new life as easy as possible, for their sake.

Children of divorce, handled improperly, can lead to childhood anxiety, insomnia and even depression. Discipline problems can creep into the mix as well. You may find it helpful to obtain a book on child psychology or child development, of the self-help type. If you can afford it, a session or two with a child psychologist may be of immeasurable help in guiding your kids along a healthy path. You owe this to your kids. With the right care, children of divorce can be happy and well adjusted individuals whose love for each of you is unconditional.

With the alarming rate of illiteracy in the U.S. today, it’s imperative that parents introduce children to books at an early age. It should be a fact that children and books go together like two (happy) peas in a pod. We can make that happen. A love of reading encourages an inquisitive mind, critical thinking skills, helps develop a sense of humor, increases a desire for knowledge and moral values. Books can help a child learn empathy and compassion for others.

Children’s story books form the perfect introduction between children and books. Those nap time and bed time stories with toddlers form the basis of many a happy memory, which lasts into adulthood. Who would have thought that you’d remember Mom or Dad reading ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ or ‘Lord of the Rings’, decades later? Yet, probably each of us does have such memories, fond recollections of time spent reading and imagining, before we ever learned to read.

Illustrations provide the bridge to the words of the story. Preschoolers are fascinated by the pictures which visually tell the story, from page to page. Children and books thus become the best of friends. Soon, your child becomes curious to find out how to read the words themselves. You can encourage this process subtly, occasionally linking a word on the page to the portion of the illustration that pertains to a word or idea. For example, tonight’s bedtime story is ‘Alligay Saves the Stars’. The story has numerous references to this cute little flying Alligator, trying to retrieve his boomerang from the starry sky. This is how children and books become fast friends. When the time comes and they’re ready to learn their ABCs, you’ll have an eager pupil who now understands the power he or she has within their grasp.

Starting an early relationship between children and books does form a bond that lasts a lifetime. Frequent story reading sessions and trips to the library becomes an enjoyable past time and habit. As kids get older, they have a desire to expand their knowledge through reading. By the time they’re in third or fourth grade, you may find them choosing a book from the library in an area that’s of special interest to them. A book on frogs or astronomy. The point is, you’ve guided them to a point where they actively pursue knowledge through reading.

Is this a description of you? You save up every cent to buy the latest photo gadgets and gear, you read all the how-to books, subscribe to the best photo magazines and haunt the camera shop. Finally, you find a suitable subject, insert a clean memory stick into your camera, (or some film) and start firing away.

When we finish our “photo shoot”, we run to the nearest lab to get our film processed. Or, we grab the nearest 10 year old to show us how to download our photos into the computer. finally, our photos are ready!

Our gorgeous model has a tree growing out of her head – on every shot in the ENTIRE session! Or, we never noticed that garbage can off to the side. You know, the one ruining the best shots. Did you notice the cars driving by in the background? How about the bunch of kids walking by?

Yeah, we fell into the trap of focusing all our attention on the model and not looking around at the other elements in the scene. It’s easy to do. And I don’t care who they are, every photographer out there has done the same thing!

We have to think about shutter speed, film speed, f-stop and so on – photography is very technical for an ART! Then we have to be concerned about our models’ pose, eyes, smile and so on…now we’re expected to pay attention to the cars, trees, kids, and trash in the background?

Yup. Add one more challenge to the list. It’s not too hard to get in the habit of checking all the way around the edges of the frame – if you make it a habit!

Do whatever it takes to FORCE yourself to consciously slow down and take a second to let your eye scan all the way around the edges of the viewfinder. But that’s not all. Consider those trees or light poles way off in the background, are they going to be blurred out or will they be sharp enough to be a factor in the final print. Can you move and shoot from a different angle?

Does your background include a street? Watch out for traffic – auto or pedestrian. Can you move to a different location, or change shooting angles and eliminate the traffic? Will you have to wait for a break in the traffic to get your shot?

I know this is a very obvious tip, but if this wasn’t a very costly, everyday problem I wouldn’t have bothered with this article. You can save a lot of time and money by just taking an extra second or two and looking at your backgrounds.

When children get to be 6 or 7 years old, it’s only fair to establish your children’s allowance at a rate that is appropriate to their age, as well as in consideration for tasks they are expected to perform on a regular basis. This helps them understand how fast that $5 can be depleted and how items can be a good buy, or perhaps not. They’ll be able to spend more wisely.

When you first establish your children’s allowance fund, make it clear that they may spend their money as they wish (you may want to exclude candy ” you’re still in charge of the food!), but, when the money has been spent, they’ll need to wait until the next allowance day before buying anything else. It’s important that this be an absolute rule that’s not bent. If you give in and front them some money against next week, you’re only teaching them to be irresponsible.

Let your kids know that, as they get older and assume more responsible chores, the children’s allowance fund increases. You can set a standard of a $1-2 per week increase each year, depending, of course, on their completing their chores regularly. This gives them something to shoot for and also explains why there’s a difference between your seven and fifteen year old’s allowance.

Finally, before you let them loose with all this cash, get your children a coin purse in which to keep their money. Otherwise, it might end up scattered all over the room, or lost. Your children’s allowance fund is the first step in learning responsible money management and the concept of a job well done.

What is masking? Well you may ask! Masking is a method of covering certain areas of a painting, so they are, in fact, protected while you apply paint to the other parts. In principal this is a fairly easy way of gaining effects to your work that otherwise seemed not possible.

Obviously it could present a mammoth task if you have a piece of your art that has much detailing on and yet needs the background covering and would also take up so much time. It would require a lot of patience too, if you went on to paint round the detailed subject with a fine brush and at the same time struggled to get the paint pretty even and without patching.

I would strongly recommend before you begin your background, that you go ahead and mask out your subject. This makes life so much easier! Then paint your background easily, don’t worry about going on top of the masking. You will have achieved a nice flat background. Nice clear outlines will show when the mask is removed and the underneath will still remain white.

This medium is absolutely great say when you are painting landscapes using watercolours. It is absolutely ideal for blocking out trees, stark branches in winter scenes, for example.You would need to use a brush with a fine point.
