It is possible to add a mount to a finished watercolour picture to improve it before you get around to framing it, or you could also use it as a card. So what will you need for starters?

A cutting mat, craft knife, watercolour paper, watercolours, scrap paper, compasses, 12mm flat brush, no.5 brush and a ruler.

Most handicraft shops and art supply centres actually sell ready made mounts and these are available in all types of sizing and forms, but personally it is much more interesting if you create your own. This is quite an easy exercise, making and decorating your own mount, to blend with a watercolour background.

You need to start with something simple, in this instance I have used a flower to explain how to do it. Choose something like a big daisy or dahlia and get the cutting board and knife ready.

What you need to do now, is to cut your card shapes. So, cut two pieces of your paper, a good size being 4ins x 6ins, then with your compass, draw quite lightly a circle in both, which is preferably about 3 inches in diameter.

Your flower needs a centre, so you need to make an inner ring to use for this. With a no.5 brush you can then paint round this, after you have mixed a few water colours, to get a realistic shade.

Once you have completed this, you can then fill in the central part of this with a paler watercolour wash. The colours that you use will obviously depend on the type of flower you have chosen.

So now we have arrived at the petal stage. Choose your colour and then dip the brush in the paint. An easy way to achieve petals, is to lay the brush flat, with pressure. This actually creates a good petal shape for you.

Proceed by creating your petals all the way round the outside of your flower centre. It is entirely up to you whether you add a tinge of another colour to these.

You have all your flower shape mapped out now, so what you could do now, is to paint in some flower seeds to your centre. For this, obviously, you will need a darker choice of colour to paint with. Just apply dots to give the appearance of seeds, which you could also apply to the outline, only slightly larger ones. With a gel pen, you could also go round your petals, with a thin touch of colour.

Take your second piece of paper and cut the big circle out of this. Use the scrap paper to protect it. Choose a colour that will compliment your flower and paint the remaining card, or mount, with a 12mm brush, but you will need a watery mix.

Now you will have to leave this to dry before adding any decoration you might wish to add to it, either side of the cut out, to give it an extra finish with toning or contrasting patterns and colours.

This done, you can then mount your flower, by first ensuring that the mounting is dry, then put it straight over your central picture. Note, this could then be framed as a picture or used as a card.
