Our family game night was one I looked forward to when I was younger. We all would pull up a chair around our kitchen table, make ice cream floats and play cards. It was a great time together.

Those were good times because of the way it pulled us all back in as a family. My husband also had a similar experiences in his family so we both were in agreement that we wanted to continue this tradition with our family.

The problem we soon found was how to find games that everyone could play. With an age span of 7 years, our 15 year old was not so keen in playing Go Fish all the time, nor could our 8 year old play Risk. How do we solve this dilemma?

Of course, I do have a couple of suggestions!! We discovered a very fun game last year called Mexican Train dominos. Easy to learn, fun to play and several people can play – good for a family of 7 and always a few strangling friends around. The dominos rules for Mexican Train we learned are different than the ones that came in the game (look at our website for how we play), but it worked best for our group.

Another choice we too found is Apples to Apples. Unlike Mexican Train dominos, this game takes a bit of explanation of what the clues and the judge cards say and a bit of help with reading the definitions. But there is a Jr. version of this game.

Another new game in our game cupboard (really Grandma’s, who bought it for the holidays last year), is Blokus. This fun tile game is great for 4 players and involves an opportunity to see how smart your kids are as they use their critical thinking skills.

All these games are relatively inexpensive and sturdy. Mexican Train dominos, etal are definite must-haves for your family nights. You will enjoy the laughter and memories they will bring!

The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, built around 1805, is the longest free standing structure of any kind on the island. It’s no longer used for its intended purpose, but it did serve to provide guidance for vessels for more than one hundred and fifty years. The interesting story here doesn’t have anything to do with providing light – it has to do with ghosts.

In 1815, the lighthouse keeper was found dead of a presumed murder and it’s been since rumored that the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse remains his haunting grounds.

Sports History Hanlan’s Point Stadium was built on Toronto Island in 1897 to be the home for the Toronto Maple Leaf professional baseball team. The stadium itself was rebuilt on a few occasions over the years and no longer stands today, but in 1914 it was the sight of what would have been one of baseballs most valuable and sought after artifacts. Before all of the hype and hoopla, before the famous nicknames and before he became known as the greatest player to ever take the field, Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run out of Hanlan’s Point Stadium and into the Harbor. There are also a number of beaches for residents and tourists to swim, play and relax – and for the more daring among the vacationing crowd, there are clothing optional beaches available as well.

Another interesting note about the small group of islands around Toronto Harbor is that collectively they make up the biggest ‘car free’ community throughout North America. All of the roadways are paved, but motor vehicle use is restricted to only service vehicles – if you are on one of the islands and in need of some form of transportation other than your feet there are several locations throughout the island where bicycles, Toronto dinner cruises and other modalities of self propelled transportation can be rented.

If you’re planning a vacation to Toronto, your trip could easily be overfilled by all of the amazing attractions on the mainland, but you’d really be selling yourself short if you didn’t stop by and drink in some of the incredible history that Toronto Island has to offer.

The ‘free verse’ style of poetry is the most popular among current writers. Walt Whitman is credited with originating the form in the late 19th century. Poetry was restricted to certain forms and rhyming schemes before that time.

Patterns are common to formal poetry. Scansion is the analyzing of rhyme and meter. A letter is commonly places at the end of each line beginning with the first letter of the alphabet A for the first rhyme, and B for the second, etc.

If the first two lines rhyme with each other, we would place an A at the end of each line. If the third and fourth line rhyme with each other but not the first two, we would place a B at the end of each. The pattern would be AABB. If the fifth line rhymes with either, we would place an A, or B appropriately. If it does not rhyme, a C would be used.

Next, we are concerned with meter. Each line contains a set number of beats, usually two or three syllables. The most common beat is ‘Iambic pentameter’. The individual beats consist of a short and a strong pulse. This beat is present in words such as ‘arrest, domain, forsooth’. The accent is on the second syllable.

Time for the fun stuff! When you tell stories or write letters, how do you start? Is it maybe something you overheard, or read about? Or maybe something you witnessed? Start with something that is comfortable to you.

What kind of poem are you going to write? Would you like to do a character study or a story? The best thing to do is go through some examples. This will give you some ideas. Don’t worry if you get a “writer’s block.” The best way to get past it is to take a break and come back the next day. Keep a pen and paper with you, something may come to you if your out.

Work on your poem for many weeks and take the last line of one of your poem and carry on from there, ignoring entirely what you drafted before. You will be surprised at what you are able to accomplish. Get writing!
