Internet fax

by yang himfr

Internet fax uses the internet to receive and send faxes.

Internet faxing (or “online faxing”) is a general term which refers to sending a document facsimile using the Internet, rather than using only phone networks (traditional faxing).

Depending on the specific method/implementation (see below), advantages of using the internet can include

1. no extra telephone line required for the fax 2. paperless communication, integrated with email 3. send and receive multiple faxes simultaneously 4. reduction in phone costs

Note that depending on which method is used, suitable equipment and/or the use of a gateway is required (see below).

Traditional fax

The traditional method for sending faxes over phone lines (PSTN)

* Fax machine → Phone line → Fax machine

A fax machine is an electronic instrument composed of a scanner, a modem, and a printer. It transmits data in the form of pulses via a telephone line to a recipient, usually another fax machine, which then transforms these impulses into images, and prints them on paper.

The traditional method requires a phone line, and only one fax can be connected to send or receive at a time.

Internet Fax

Internet Fax achieves a dramatic reduction in communication costs especially when long faxes are frequently exchanged with overseas or distant offices.

Since there is no telephone connection charge when sending a fax over the Internet, the cost of sending faxes is covered entirely by the fixed line Internet connection fee. The recipient machine must also be compatible with Internet Fax.

Hardcopy is converted to TIFF or PDF data and attached to an e-mail in MIME format. Then, taking advantage of a connection to the office LAN, data is sent via TCP/IP directly to any Internet Fax on the intranet or Internet. Because they make use of TCP/IP, Internet Faxes do not incur long-distance transmission costs and reception is verifiable.

IP Fax and IP Address Relay

IP Fax transmits data over an office intranet from a networked multifunctional device to the IP address of another. Taking advantage of an established LAN / WAN infrastructure, IP Fax eliminates costly connection and transmission fees.

Also, IP Fax does not require a dedicated server or make use of the office mail server. IP Address Relay forwards to a multifunctional device for relaying to a local G3 fax machine.

Computer-based faxing

As modems came into wider use with personal computers, the computer was used to send faxes directly. Instead of first printing a hard copy to be then sent via fax machine, a document could now be printed directly to the software fax, then sent via the computer’s modem. Receiving faxes was accomplished similarly.

* Computer → Phone line → Fax machine * Fax Machine → Phone line → Computer

A disadvantage of receiving faxes this way is that the computer has to be turned on and running the fax software to receive any faxes. Note: This method is distinct from Internet faxing as the information is sent directly over the telephone network, not over the Internet. This will help in communicating from remote places to the fax machines location.

Internet fax servers/gateways

The Internet has enabled development of several other methods of sending and receiving a fax. The more common method is an extension of computer-based faxing, and involves using a fax server/gateway to the Internet to convert between faxes and emails. It is often referred to as “fax to mail” or “mail to fax”. This technology is more and more replacing the traditional fax machine because it offers the advantage of dispensing with the machine as well as the additional telephone line.

Reception:

* Fax machine → Phone line → Fax gateway → email message (over Internet) → computer email account

A fax is sent via the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to the fax server, which receives the fax and converts it into PDF or TIFF format, according to the instructions of the user. The fax is then transmitted to the Web server which posts it in the Web interface on the account of the subscriber, who is alerted of the reception by an email containing the fax as an attached file and sometimes by a message on their mobile phone.

Sending:

* Computer → Internet → Fax gateway → Phone line → Fax machine

From his/her computer, in the supplier Web site, the user chooses the document s/he wants to send and the fax number of the recipient. When sending, the document is usually converted to PDF format and sent by the Web server to the fax server, which then transmits it to the recipient fax machine via the Standard Telephone Network. Then the user receives a confirmation that the sending was carried out, in his/her web interface and/or by email.

An Internet fax service allows one to send faxes from a computer via an Internet connection, thanks to a Web interface usually available on the supplier’s Web site. This technology has many advantages:

* No fax machine → no maintenance, no paper, toner expenditure, possible repairs, etc. * Mobility → All actions are done on the Web interface; the service is thus available from any computer connected to Internet, everywhere in the world. * Confidentiality → The faxes are received directly on the account of the user; he is the only one who can access it. The received faxes are then less likely to be lost or read by the wrong people. * No installation of software or hardware → All actions are done on the Web interface of the supplier, on the account of the user. * No telephone subscription for an additional line dedicated to the fax. * Many faxes can be sent or received simultaneously, and faxes can be received while the computer is switched off.

Early email to fax services such as The Phone Company and Digital Chicken were developed in the mid-1990s.

Internet socket

by Professional editor working for Flexible Exhaust Tubing.

In computer networking, an Internet socket (or commonly, a network socket or socket) is the endpoint of a bidirectional communication flow across an Internet Protocol-based computer network, such as the Internet. Internet sockets (in plural) are an application programming interface (API) in an operating system, used for in inter-process communication. Internet sockets constitute a mechanism for delivering incoming data packets to the appropriate application process or thread, based on a combination of local and remote IP addresses and port numbers. Each socket is mapped by the operational system to a communicating application process or thread.

A socket address is the combination of an IP address (the location of the computer) and a port (which is mapped to the application program process) into a single identity, much like one end of a telephone connection is between a phone number and a particular extension line at that location.

An Internet socket is characterized by a unique combination of the following:

* Protocol (TCP, UDP or raw IP). Consequently, TCP port 53 is not the same socket as UDP port 53. * Local socket address (Local IP address and port number) * Remote socket address (Only for established TCP sockets. As discussed in the Client-Server section below, this is necessary since a TCP server may serve several clients concurrently. The server creates one socket for each client, and these sockets share the same local socket address.)

The operating system forwards incoming IP packets to the corresponding application or service process by extracting the socket address information from the IP and transport protocol headers.

Within the operating system and the application that created a socket, the socket is referred to by a unique integer number called socket identifier or socket number.

In Internet standards, in many textbooks as well as in this article, the term “socket” refers to an entity that is uniquely identified by the socket number. In other textbooks[1], the socket term refers to a local socket address, i.e. a “combination of an IP address and a port number”. In the original definition of socket given in RFC 147 as it was related to the ARPA network in 1971, a socket was “specified as a 32 bit number with even sockets identifying receiving sockets and odd sockets identifying sending sockets.” Today, however, sockets are bidirectional.

On Unix-like and Windows NT based operating systems the netstat command line tool can list all currently listening and established sockets and related information.

Socket pairs

Communicating local and remote sockets are called socket pairs. Each socket pair is described by a unique 4-tuple struct consisting of source and destination IP addresses and port numbers, i.e. of local and remote socket addresses. [2] [3]. As seen in the discussion below, in the TCP case, each unique socket pair 4-tuple is assigned a socket number, while in the UDP case, each unique local socket address is assigned a socket number.

Socket types There are several Internet socket types:

* Datagram sockets, also known as connectionless sockets, which use User Datagram Protocol (UDP) * Stream sockets, also known as connection-oriented sockets, which use Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). * Raw sockets (or Raw IP sockets), typically available in routers and other network equipment. Here the transport layer is bypassed, and the packet headers are not stripped off, but are accessible to the application. Application examples are Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP, best known for the Ping suboperation), Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP), and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF).

There are also non-Internet sockets, implemented over other transport protocols, such as Systems Network Architecture (SNA). See also Unix domain sockets (UDS), for internal inter-process communication.

Health (band)

by yang himfr

Health, usually typeset HEALTH, is an American noise rock band from Los Angeles, California. The band’s 2007 release with Crystal Castles charted at position nine in the UK indie singles chart.

History

The band have found fame by playing multiple concerts for free[2], leading to a variety of venues requesting to book them. The band’s favourite setting, LA’s The Smell, has been their chosen place to record their full length album, “during empty mornings”, although the band have already recorded a live album at the Smell, released on DNT Records.

In 2008, Boston newspaper The Phoenix named them the Best New Band from California.

HEALTH opened for Nine Inch Nails on part of the Lights in the Sky tour in the fall of 2008.

Style

HEALTH have been described as having “artfully crafted noise and raw synth, haunting monotone vocals, and drum skills that are borderline insane”[6]. Guardian Unlimited writer, Louis Pattison, chose the Crystal Castles version of “Crimewave” as the pick of the week, describing the song as “melancholy electro-pop built from pixelated synths and depressed vocals that hint at a past programme of busy and sustained serotonin depletion”. Jim Carroll of The Irish Times also chose the song as tune of the week.

The band describes the role of lyrics as being “purposely kept vague for the listener”:

“…[Lyrics] sort of begin to bring out this more individual quality to the whole thing like, ‘These are the lyrics, and this is the guy is singing them, so I can relate to that.’ Which is really not something we want. [9] We wanted the vocals to have an even, unaffected feel. A softness, like a Zombies melody, or even a Gregorian chant. We aren’t just interested in being a noisy screaming band.”

The band’s unusual sound can be partially accredited to the use of the Zoothorn, which is a permutation of microphone and guitar pedal and an occasional atonal sound without a symmetrical structure.

DKW Junior

by Professional editor working for Car Bucket Seats.

The DKW Junior was a small front wheel drive saloon manufactured by Auto Union AG. The car received a positive reaction when first exhibited, initially badged as the DKW 600, at the Frankfurt Motor Show in March 1957. The ‘Junior’ name was given to the (by now) DKW 750 in 1959 when the car went into volume production, but failed to survive an upgrade in January 1963, after which the car was known as the DKW F12. In addition to the saloon, a pretty ‘F12 Roadster’ (cabriolet version) was produced in limited numbers.

The car was known for its two stroke engine. A number of European auto-makers produced two-stroke powered cars in the 1950s, but by the time the DKW Junior came along, the market was beginning to resist two-stroke powered cars as the industry increasingly standardised on four stroke four cylinder units which accordingly were becoming cheaper to produce. Two stroke engined cars were perceived by some as rough and noisy by comparison.

In terms of its size and pricing, the DKW Junior slotted into the range just below the Auto Union 1000, which itself underwent an upgrade and a name change (from DKW to Auto Union) in 1957. The Junior was therefore from its introduction until August 1963 the only DKW branded car.

The Auto Union 1000 had a form that closely followed that of a prototype first presented in 1938. In contrast, the smaller Junior had an uncompromisingly modern three box shape, filled out to the corners and featuring tail fins which were just beginning to appear on one or two of Europe’s more fashionable designs at this time.

Despite its modern shape, the body sat on a separate chassis.

The DKW Junior prototype exhibited in 1957 featured a two cylinder 660 cc two stroke engine engine reminiscent of the two stroke engine last seen in the DKW F89 Meisterklasse phased out in 1953.

A new plant was constructed at the company’s Ingolstadt location for production of the car (DKWs having been assembled since the war till now at Dsseldorf), and by the time the Junior went into production, the prototype’s engine had been replaced by a three cylinder two stroke unit of 741 cc for which an output of 34 bhp (25 kW) was claimed.

It is not clear whether the DKW Junior de Luxe, introduced in 1961, was intended to replace or to complement the original Junior which, in any case, was withdrawn in 1962. The Junior de Luxe had its cylinders bored out: total displacement was now 796 cc. Claimed power output was unchanged but the torque was marginally increased and the wheel size grew from 12 to 13 inches. Claimed maximum speed increased from 114 km/h (71 mph) to 116 km/h (72 mph).

In January 1963 the Junior De Luxe was replaced by the DKW F12. Outwardly there was little change, but the C pillar became more angular and the engine was enlarged to 889 cc which was reflected by a claimed increase in output to 40 bhp (29 kW). Apart from the engines, the big news from the F12 involved the brakes: the F12 was the first car in this class to be equipped with front disc brakes.

In August the Junior’s 796 cc engine reappeared in the DKW F11 which was in effect a reduced specification F12.

The DKW F12 roadster which appeared in 1964 extracted 45 bhp (33 kW) from its 889 cc three cylinder engine, and this more powerful unit became available in the F12 saloon for a few months from February 1965.

Early in the summer of 1965 Volkswagen acquired the Auto Union business from Daimler Benz: production of the two stroke DKWs was almost immediately terminated. In the market place the DKWs had been facing an increasing struggle to compete with similarly sized more powerful four stroke engined offerings from Volkswagen and, more recently, Opel. By the end of 1965 the plant formerly controlled by Auto Union was building Audi badged cars, with four cylinder four stroke engines designed, before the change of ownership, in collaboration with Mercedes Benz.

Want To Paint Cars? – Do-It-Yourself Auto Spray Painting

by Mario Goldstein

Car scratches eventually appear in a way of almost every car owner. There are many methods of dealing with them however painting it over with an auto spray gives the best result. If you have enough experience you will be able to paint over even a big scratch but a beginner also can manage to repair imperfections on his vehicle. Here are the steps to follow:

First, it is necessary to clean metal from dirt and rust. Dirt is removed by washing the panel with soapy water. When dry, sand out the scratch and surrounding area with sandpaper. Then you need to apply putty on a surface. It should consist of two components (with a hardener). Do not choose epoxy putty otherwise, it will dry for 24 hours. Use rubber or thin metal pallet for alignment.

It will take 20 minutes to dry up with a temperature of 200C (392F). At this stage, you may also use auto filler primer that is specially designed to fill scratches and imperfections and perfectly replaces putty. It can be found in auto stores but if you are after budget repair ? putty will work just fine.

Next step, condition the surface with sandpaper of different calibers starting with sharp and then moving to a fine one. The panel should be ideally smooth to the touch. To make it this way use ultrafine 2000-3000 grit sandpaper and running water.

Now it is time to apply a primer. When primer layer is dry, you can start painting. To make sure the colour will match your car, enamel should be selected under number specified in the service book of the car. If you will paint your car in garage, take care that dust and moisture in it would be as little as possible otherwise fine motes will definitely get on a fresh paint.

Use masking tape and thick paper to cover parts that are not going to be painted. Make several light applications of a spray paint on a surface. Paint is put in two layers. First – thin, second – thicker. Time interval before applying second layer is 6 to 8 minutes. Average time of drying is about 2 hours, and full fixing of paint takes 24 hours.

When paint is dry, you can remove paper and masking tape. If you notice some imperfections such as drips or rough edges, you can fix it using ultrafine sandpaper. When finished apply a top coat over the painted surface and let it dry. There is no scratch anymore!
