Holiday Crafts
Crafts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day:As a parent, encourage your children to create special crafts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. This is a great way to show their love for parents and use their creativity. Some great ideas for Mother’s Day crafts include flower decorations, sun catchers, wind chimes, needle holders, handmade cards, planters, trinket boxes, wreaths, flower vases, candles, and photo frames. There are even beginner quilting books with all sorts of patterns for girls that want to sew a special quilt for their mom.For Father’s Day there are cards and crafts reflecting his favorite sport or hobby such as golf, baseball, football, garden tools, bowling, camping, etc. There are also t-shirts with sayings such as “World’s Greatest Dad.”
On Valentines Day, one craft that could perhaps win the heart of the love of your life is a simple, hand-crafted card. Don’t stop with a simple, single fold “I love you” card; make sure that you include heartfelt emotions in your card, expressing yourself with honesty and truth so that your loved one really gets the point of how you feel about him or her. It can easily be more personal than any purchased card, and you can include a picture of the two of you that makes it even more intimate.
Holidays usually bring fun times for kids. Most schools are out on holidays, and there are often numerous parties and fun activities leading up to a holiday. And what better way to celebrate than with creative crafts for kids? Crafts are great for teaching the meaning behind certain holidays and having a little fun in the process. Crafts can also be used to fill extra time when students complete their schoolwork early in the day.
Candy dish – cut a hexagon of plain cardstock and then six pieces from Christmas card fronts (trying to get the nicest part of the picture showing on the shape) that taper slightly wider at the top than the base for the sides. Cover all the pieces with clear contact paper and punch holes along all the edges, evenly spaced. Sew the pieces together using ribbon or yarn, and you have a one of a kind candy dish. Let the kids experiment with different shapes and sizes.
Arts & crafts for other holidays While the above discussion has focused on Christmas, the end of December is by no means the only time of the year when people will create special holiday-focused arts & crafts. Other holidays that present excellent opportunities for creativity include Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Independence Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. Special occasions that offer excellent opportunities for arts & crafts include birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, and other “milestones.” While expensive gifts are often appreciated, it is frequently the handmade crafts that are remembered and cherished long after the special day.
The most popular holiday arts and crafts for children and families to make together at Christmas include cotton ball snowmen, construction paper reindeer antlers, candy cane reindeers, and of course the timeless edible gingerbread house. Another fun idea for children is to make Christmas countdown calendars.
Easter Crafts for Kids:Easter offers many opportunities for crafts with religious themes, an Easter bunny theme, or a blend of the two. There are Easter eggs and baskets. Kids enjoy dyeing Easter eggs and making their own baskets. They can also make baby chick crafts, puppets, spring decorations and wreaths, and Easter gift bags.
Halloween Crafts:Create “spooky” crafts with your kids during Halloween. These might include wreaths decorated with bats and ghosts, ghouly party favors, spider webs, treat bags, Halloween ornaments, witch dolls, Jack-O-Lanterns, pumpkin decorations, or even Halloween masks.
