Spring Dance Festival
At Kilauea the home of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano is where the Volcano Art Center is located. With all the volcanic action this area gets it has becomes so dynamic and powerful, it creates new land form daily. The community in this area derives their tradition and culture with how dynamic and powerful the area is.
The vision of the Volcano Art Center is to promote, develop, and perpetuate the artistic and culture heritage of the Hawaiis people and environment. T o put this vision into reality the organization puts it into action by the activities they hold annually like the visual, literary, and performing arts. Their artists, performers, writers, scientists and educators are just some of their members.
On March 27, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. at Kilauea Military Camp Theater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park the Volcano Art Center will present on of their activities of the year. This is the 12th Annual Spring Dance Contest. This activity will give the choreographers and dancers to showcase their talents.
The Spring Dance Contest not only allows pervious choreographers and dancers to join the contest but also new comers are allowed to join. The Spring Dance Contest was created last 1993 in honor of Earnest Morgan. Earnest Morgan was one of the most influential Big Island contemporary dancers.
Right after the contest there will be an open dialogue to discuss the dances done. This dialogue will be between the choreographers and audience members. The dialogue done in the hopes that the audience will have a greater understanding of the dances done and in the end have a better understanding of their culture.
The admission ticket can be purchased in advance at the Volcano Art Center Gallery, Kilauea General Store, and KMC General Store in Volcano; Keaau Natural Foods in Keaau; and CD Wizard and The Most Irresistible Shop in Hilo. The ticket will cost $9.00 in purchased in advance. If purchased at the door the cost is $10.00.
