After he finished his formal education, Charles went working as a reporter. His career as a writer started in 1833 when his short stories and essays started to appear in magazines. A Dinner at Popular Walk was his first published story.

His most amusing stories and sketches were first collected as Sketches by Boz (Boz being his pseudonym) and published in 1836. This was his first published book. In 1836 he also married Catherine Hogarth, with whom he was to have had 10 children.

After that he became a full-time writer, producing one complex novel after another. He wrote A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol which is one of the most popular Christmas stories of all times, David Copperfield, Bleak House and many others.
