Minnesota Vikings – Will ’09 be their best season yet?
The Minnesota Vikings, for years, have been providing their fans with exceptional football. Watching a Vikings game you are guaranteed every combination of “guy” emotion you could possibly dream of – adrenaline, anger, pride, and many more. The 2009 season; however, may be their best year yet. If draft picks go as planned, the Vikings will be introducing a new quarterback to the team, a quarterback that goes by the name of Jay Cutler. Cutler is one of the top ten quarterbacks in the entire league; no other team deserves his leadership like the Vikings.
The Minnesota Vikings proved themselves a valuable NFL franchise, right from the beginning of their time. Their very first game, against the Chicago Bears, and led by none other than Fran Tarkenton, was a triumphant win over another powerful NFL team. Over the next 40-years, the Vikings held up their end of the bargain, and have won and NFL title along with three NFC titles.
Minnesota has always had solid professional football teams. Back in the 20s and 30s, the Minneapolis Marines / Red Jackets made residents and fans proud. Unfortunately, the team was dissolved and there was not another pro football team, in Minnesota, until 1959.
In 1959, a group of successful businessmen created an organization known as the AFL. It was at this time that the state was offered a chartered membership in the AFL. However, only five short months later, the NFL came in and crushed that offer with a better one, which is where the creation of the Minnesota Vikings occurred.
In 1961, the Vikings stormed on their home field, as an NFL franchise, for the first time in history. Their name is in recognition of the Scandinavian American History that is flowing through the land in this region. Tickets have always been a hot item; in fact, over 26,000 were sold in the first year. On average, 35,000 fans would fill the stands, at home games, for years.
In the 60s the Vikings had a defensive line that was unbreakable, one which the fans began to call the Purple People Eaters. This defensive line was responsible for getting the team a championship title in 1968, and guarding their way through the decade. In 1970, the team won an NFL championship, which got them into Super Bowl IV. They lost the game, but it is a proud moment in history for the team and the fans.
In the 1970s, the team continually amazed fans and brought home many accomplishments. The winning records were amazing, but in ’74 and ’75, the team made it to the Super Bowl. The made it again in 1977, where they finally took their first Super Bowl win against the Oakland Raiders.
The Vikings home court – Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome – is consistently overflowing with adoring fans, screaming and cheering them on every step of the way. Season tickets are no longer easy to find as they sell out in no time at all. The ’09 season will be no different; fans are already making plans for season ticket purchases. This is one of those years that if you do not act quickly, you will be left on the sidelines.
