Paolo Nutini’s Sophomore Release – “Sunny Side Up”
The second release from Paolo Nutini of Scotland is scheduled to drop on June 1, 2009. After a three year break, “Sunny Side Up,” written by Nutini and produced by Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams / Ray LaMontagne) is finally here. Nutini and his band, The Vipers, recorded the album in Ireland, Wales, L.A., New York and in Peter Gabriel’s studio in Bath. It combines Celtic influence with a Motown feel, warm sentiments and brillians sounds.
On his latest effort, Nutini again blends soul and modern pop with folk, ragtime, and more. He seems to be a combination of John Martyn, Bob Marley and Otis Redding – with intuitive and intimate lyrics, yet wild and unpredictable vocals and melodies.
You’ll hear Nutini’s typical slurred lyics on tracks like “Ten Out Of Ten” – a ska/reggae based tune, and “Coming Up Easy” which has a throwback sixties R&B sound. The first single is “Candy,” a beautiful and catchy country/rock track which nicely showcases The Vipers. There are other styles like folk-rock on “Growing Up Beside You” and acoustic jazz on “Tricks Of The Trade.”
Nutini has grown up since his first release, as evident on Sunny Side Up. His diverse sounds and confidence will grow on you steadily as you hear the album in its entirety.
For a trip through expertly done modern pop with soul, and distinctive vocals, don’t let this one pass you by.
