Shining Through: The movie is set in WWII. Linda Voss is a legal secretary with a Jewish relative in Germany. She figures out her boss is working for the government on covert operations. She wants to help, and she speaks German. She eventually gets an assignment to go undercover in Germany. What will her fate be?
The Muse: Brooks plays a Hollywood screenwriter who’s informed that he’s out of touch until he hooks up with a genuine muse Rock, a capricious lady whose performing procedures are unorthodox at best. As with tons of Brooks’ films, the parts are better than the entire, although his gibes at Hollywood are valuable, and some of the cameo appearances which we come away are extremely ludicrous in fact. Cast includes Albert Brooks, Sharon Rock, Andie MacDowell, Jeff Bridges, Mark Feuerstein, Steven Wright, and Bradley Whitford. (96 minutes, 1999)
Frailty: (2002) A Texas widower informs his 2 youthful sons that he has had a vision that they have been selected to annihilate demons who are all over the world disguised as human beings. His boys are then made to witness, and partake in a vicious succession of killings. Twisty temperament piece is well created by first time director Paxton, however tough to digest, especially for a parent. Cast includes Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, Powers Boothe, Matt O’Leary, Luke Askew, Jeremy Sumpter, Derk Cheetwood, and Melissa Crider. (99 minutes, 2002)
Supreme Justice: Two Supreme Court Justices are dead. When college student Darby Shaw writes a brief paper, speculating as to who would have interest in seeing these two judges killed, it is read by people in high places, and Darby is now in danger. She doesn’t know who to trust, until Washington Post writer Gray Graham convinces her he will help her if he can. Together they unravel the mystery and create a clever solution to Darby’s predicament.
Invincible: This is a documentary-drama based on events in Philadelphia in 1976. New head coach Dick Vermeil has an unconventional tryout for the NFL Eagles. Anyone who wants a shot to play pro football can come. He is looking for a way to create some interest in the team, and wake up his players. Out of all those who came, one man, Eagles diehard fan, and former high school football player, 30 year old teacher Vince Papale actually gets to go on to practice with the actual team. In a huge surprise, Vermeil keeps him on the team. In a fairy tale ending, Vince actually scores a touchdown in his short NFL career.
The Senator Was Indiscreet: Humor-playwright Kaufman’s only directorial fling turns out relatively well, with Powell as Senator whose notebook causes embarrassment. Cast includes William Powell, Ella Raines, Peter Lind Hayes, Arleen Whelan, Ray Collins, and Hans Conried. (147 minutes, 1974)
Crystal Heart: Youthful guy who should live his life like the “boy in a bubble,” restricted to a commanded atmosphere, creates a relation with a seductive stone singer with whom he’s fallen in love long-distance. Soft, unsurprising trip with music video parts from Kitaen. Cast includes Tawny Kitaen, Lee Curreri, Lloyd Bochner, Simon Andreu, Might Heatherly, and Marina Saura. (102 minutes, 1987)
After the Sunset: Master robber Brosnan and seductive accomplice Hayek flee to a sun-drenched heaven after lugging one very last diamond heist, however FBI representative Harrelson who’s been hindered by Brosnan before tracks them down, desiring reprisal-and wishing to stop another theft. Cast includes Perforate Brosnan, Salma Hayek, Woody Harrelson, Don Cheadle, Naomie Harris, and Obba Babatunde. (93 minutes, 2004)
Murphy’s War: Well-orchestrated, clutching-action scenes combine with mental research of Irish ship mate O’Toole only survivor of German murder, out to get reprisal. Excellent notion although non-action patterns tend to weigh the film down; script by Skidding Silliphant. Cast includes Peter O’Toole, Sian Phillips, Philippe Noiret, Horst Janson, John Hallam, and Ingo Morgendorf. (108 minutes, 1971)
