San Francisco 49ers – Will they do it again in 2009?
The San Francisco 49ers is a well-known team – even by those who do not follow football – and play an exceptional game. The 49ers have won many championship titles and plan to continue their streak. Thanks to their season in 2008, there are some coaching and player changes taking place on the team this year, prior to the start of the 2009 season. These changes should bring nothing but passion, dedication, and – hopefully – a Super Bowl appearance.
The combination of staffing changes along with draft choices will give 49er fans a whole new team this year (not literally). Fans are anticipating that all weaknesses, pointed out last season, will be strengthened and the team will storm their way to the playoffs. This anticipation has caused an increased interest in tickets, so much so that many will be left watching the game from the big screen.
Right after WWII, there was a noticeable gap in the sporting industry. Most of the sporting industry was located on the East Coast, or in the Midwest, leaving the West Coast empty and with a lack of sporting entertainment. Anthony Morabito was determined to change this, and put the West Coast back on the map.
Anthony approached the NFL who quickly turned him down. Anthony was privy to information about the AFL and had caught wind that they would be forming in 1944. Being a smart businessman, Anthony aligned himself with the AFL at this time.
Finding the right identity, for his new team, would prove to be a daunting task, but he and his partners worked day and night until they found one. Inspiration finally came from a painting of a miner holding a gun. This is where the San Francisco 49ers got their name, this and the significance of the time the team was formed was in memory of the miners from the Gold Rush era.
After the merger of the AFL is when Morabito finally got his NFL franchise. Even though the team played well, before the NFL, this move is what got them noticed. Once they became an NFL franchise, tickets sales began to soar and fans began to fall at the 49ers feet.
Alex Smith – once a quarterback for the 49ers – will be returning to the team for the 2009 season. Smith suffered a nasty shoulder injury soon after the 2007 season began and he has been sitting on the sidelines for 1 1/2 years. This new 2-year contract gives him 2-full season to show everyone what he is made of; this is his chance to shine.
In the 60 years that the San Francisco 49ers have been playing football, the team has accomplished 5-Super Bowl wins, 17-Division Championship titles, and 5-Conference Championship titles. There is no doubt that the 49ers know how to play and they do it well. Fans, as always, eagerly await the approach of the 2009 season. There is no doubt that tickets will be hard to come by as they will sell quicker than they ever have before.
