We are all fascinated with watching movies and seem to all share in a passion to get the latest new release or old vintage classic. It is a past time we all seem to revel in as one of the best forms of public and private entertainment.

Each year we spend over 100 million dollars renting and buying movies, DVD’s and films that match our particular taste in cinema enjoyment. One look at all the theaters and movies houses that grew in America over the past 20 years, one would be inclined to think that our obsession with movies is entirely new to this generation. It is not.

A quick look at history will reveal a time when access to a movie was considered almost a luxury, especially during the Great Depression and in times when the nation was at war. There were only a few sources for movie entertainment during those times and people sought to movie watching experience with great interest.

It was in the 1920′s when sound technology was introduced to movies for the first time. These movies were smashing hits during that time and people seemed to enjoy comedies and classics such as “Gone With The Wind” and movies starring Shirley Temple.

Popular films that depicted the rise of the mob in the U.S. such as gangster movies seemed to gender great interest amongst the working class men and young teenage boys. A favorite amongst women seemed to be musicals and plays staring well known actors of that time.

During The Great Depression, many people did not have a lot of extra money to spend on entertainment. A movie ticket was equivalent to a meal ticket. So people started turning to entertaining radio shows. Here they could listen to their favorite radio personalities as stories of adventures, mysteries and romance were play out in great detail.

Instead of watching a movie, people could listen to popular movie stars and invited guests as they told stories of romance, adventure and mystery. Entire families would huddle around one small radio and would listen with great intent to the popular movie stars of that era.

Another big hit during the 1920′s was swing music performances put on by Big Bands. Since most of these performances were aired over the radio, it became a popular source of entertainment during the long evening hours.

This went over extremely well. People across the country loved it. It was a way for them to briefly escape the hardships they had to endure and enter a fantasy world where they could live out their fantasies through the roles of their favorite movie stars. It kept them entertained and took their minds of the difficulties of life.

Today, we have access to millions of movie rentals and DVD’s at the click of a mouse. It is amazing how technology has changed the way we seek entertainment. The thought of re-spraying your car implies that you are ready and committed to devote some time and cash to accomplished this project. Theres no reason why you cant do this yourself, but you’re going to need some guidelines.

When looking for wall hangings, I have found that artwork with an animal theme can be quite a delight to work with. I was asked by a friend to lend a hand in finding some artwork for walls of a new house she had purchased. After a surprising short discussion, we decided to search for several animal themed paintings since she was such an enormous animal lover.

Albeit her existing furnishings could only be called contemporary in style, the air of fun and whimsy added by the animal themed artwork was quite pleasantly surprising. We were initially worried that the two styles would not mesh, however we found that once we found artwork in the correct color schemes and sized the two styles went together surprisingly well.

Another friend and his wife decided it was time to start a family and wanted to revamp the entire house. I decided to send them a gift of a painting I happened upon which had children and animals as its theme. They were so taken with the painting they searched high and low for additional pieces from the artists collection.

I knew an interior decorator who was asked to provide several pieces of abstract artwork that would embody the essence of an animal. Her client declared that she wanted something more outside of the box than what is by her standards a very narrow definition of animal themed artwork. The final results were quite unique and did most definitely give an animal vibe to the overall theme of the room.

On that note, an artist colleague of mine was asked to paint an animal themed mural that was in the style of Cubism. Once completed the client was overjoyed and exclaimed that there was definitely a Georges Braque feel to mural.

Animal themed artwork and accessories were also put to use by a Veterinarian friend who recently opened his own clinic. He is convinced that the sense of fun and whimsy would help to put the pet owners at ease when visiting the clinic which ultimately put their pets more at ease as well.

I also have a friend whose daughter is enrolled in music classes. The music teacher prominently displays artwork of various and sundry animals playing various and sundry instruments. The teacher believes that these pictures open the children up to their own sense of fun and whimsy thereby allowing their own artistic abilities to burst forth.

The main thing to note is that no matter the age there may be animal themed artwork to appeal to every personality type out there. These animal themed paintings seem to call to the whimsy in us all.

The first step in getting your book sold to a publisher is putting together a proposal so that potential publishers know why they should invest their resources in bringing your idea to the marketplace. Here’s what you need to communicate:

1. The Overview: Why is your book concept, or ‘hook’, different from what’s already on the shelves? Does it offer a unique voice or methodology? Has something happened in the world or is there a trend that’s emerging that demands a new book on the subject?

2. The Table of Contents and Chapter Outline. This is probably the section that you’ll struggle with the most, but once it’s complete the book will practically write itself. You’ll need at least ten chapters to be considered ‘meaty’ enough for publication. Once you decide on the message of each chapter, write an engaging title for each. Then, craft a lead paragraph to demonstrate your unique ‘voice’ to your writing.

3. The Introduction. Start by studying Introductions of other non-fiction books to get a solid understanding of the purpose of this section. In short, it sets up the entire book for your readers. This is where you qualify what you are about to do within the chapters and explain yourself and your intent. For example, “I’m not a doctor, but what I’m about to share with you are ways that I’ve learned to”

4. Target Markets. No more talking to readers here, this is where you tell publishers that you completely understand the demographics of the audience you intend to sell to. Who are these people? How old are they and how do they spend their free time? If you’re writing a book about parenting, for example, give statistics about how busy your readers are and how eager they have proven to be when it comes to seeking advice.

5. Competitive Titles. There are probably several books on the shelves right now that cover your material. Let publishers know that you are fully aware of that by offering two or three of the titles and then contrasting your message with theirs. Of course, prove that your book’s message is far superior from what already exists!

6. Author Background. Assuming that you’ve convinced a publisher that your book needs to be developed, why are you the best author for the job? This is where you stop selling the book and start selling yourself. What is your background and who do you know that could lead to book sales? Publishers want to know that at least 10,000 copies of your book will sell. Using the example of a parenting book, are you the PTO President? If so, there’s a strong likelihood that you’d be invited to speak to large groups when the book comes out (which in turn leads to book sales). Do you have a radio show with a built-in audience for book sales? Are you a blogger with a proven record of unique hits per day? This section of the proposal is where you convince publishers that you are the only person qualified to write this book and help with its success.

7. Promotions. If you think that you’ll be sent on a glorious book tour and do nothing but smile and sign copies, think again. Such royal treatment is reserved for best sellers these days. You’ll need to think outside of the box and help your publisher spread the word about your book. This is where you brainstorm and share your ideas. Is there a National “Tough Love Your Dog” day that you could attach your services to somehow? Would you print a “How To” summary on postcards and send them to vets to put on display in their waiting room? Brainstorm some ways to support book sales to the masses and your publisher will know that they have a partner in you.
