Walking into a ballet class where the students are poised with straight backs, one arm poised gracefully to the side, and one foot resting lightly in line with the barre may seem like something out of a dance movie, but it’s a common sight in all ballet classes. By learning not just the basic movements, but understanding how to perform them slowly and with correct posture and balance will help you become a better dancer. Barre exercises are especially developed to train and strengthen the muscles in both your back and legs so that the more complex ballet movements appear effortless. The grace, balance and poise of a ballerina doesn’t come from her clothing, or length of time she has danced, but rather the amount of focus she has put into her barre work.

Fundamental Barre Work

The first barre work exercise that most ballet dancers will learn is a plie. Performed in either first or second position, this is either a demi-plie where your feet hold position with your heels flat into the floor, while the knees bend outwards, or a grand-plie where you should raise your heels off the floor. The most important thing to remember here is to keep your back straight as your knees bend. Don’t be tempted to bend forward.

The tendu is the next exercise you will learn. This is a simple barre exercise that forms the basis of the following two exercises. Stand with your feet in third position and gently push your non-supporting leg forward until your toe points out in front of you. Slide your leg back until you are in your starting position once again. You can also do this exercise to the side.

Take the tendu a little step further and it becomes a degage. When you push your foot forward (in a tendu front) or to the side (in a tendu side), and your toes are extended and pointed, lift them 2-3 inches from the floor, then slowly replace the toes to the floor and slide them back into the third position.

Grande Battements: Take the degage exercise a little further by raising the leg to hip height. This should be done slowly and with both your back and your leg straight. Grande Battements can be done to the front, the side, or behind. When doing a Grande Battement back exercise, resist the temptation to bend your upper body forwards as your leg extends back. Your back should remain straight at all times.

These basic barre exercises form the basis of all ballet barre work. Although they may seem simple, the real trick is to learn the technique and then perfect it so that you can do them with perfect body lines, extended legs, pointed toes and of course, a perfect straight back.

When looking for wall hangings, I have found that artwork with an animal theme can be quite a delight to work with. I was asked by a friend to lend a hand in finding some artwork for walls of a new house she had purchased. After a surprising short discussion, we decided to search for several animal themed paintings since she was such an enormous animal lover.

Although most of her new furnishings are contemporary, the animal themed paintings we found bring a sense of fun and whimsy to the room. Once we found paintings that matched her color scheme, we found that the two styles complement each other extremely well.

As another friend was exchanging his old furniture for something newer and fresher, he decided to update his wall hangings as well. Since he was at the point in his marriage when they wanted to start a family, I decided that I would gift him a painting I stumbled across that depicted children with animals. He and his wife loved the addition so much they went back and found a few more pieced from the same artists collection.

I knew an interior decorator who was asked to provide several pieces of abstract artwork that would embody the essence of an animal. Her client declared that she wanted something more outside of the box than what is by her standards a very narrow definition of animal themed artwork. The final results were quite unique and did most definitely give an animal vibe to the overall theme of the room.

On that note, an artist colleague of mine was asked to paint an animal themed mural that was in the style of Cubism. Once completed the client was overjoyed and exclaimed that there was definitely a Georges Braque feel to mural.

Not long ago, a friend graduated from Veterinary School and decided to open his own practice. He specifically wanted paintings and accessories that were animal themed that gave pet owners a sense of fun. Every room was filled with whimsical artwork and accessories that seemed to put most of his clients at ease.

I also have a friend whose daughter is enrolled in music classes. The music teacher prominently displays artwork of various and sundry animals playing various and sundry instruments. The teacher believes that these pictures open the children up to their own sense of fun and whimsy thereby allowing their own artistic abilities to burst forth.

Bottom line is I have seen animal themed paintings being used for almost every occasion and personality type. Paintings of any type of animal you can think of and even some of a more abstract nature. Animal themed paintings run the gamut of tastes and do not seem to lessen in appeal for those young or old who happened to be child-like at heart.

First the bad news: Chinese Democracy is not the heavy metal sonic assault suggested by the early release of the title track. On the other hand, it very well may be the best album of the year.

Once a rock band reaches a certain level of success, they just cant win. If they try to keep growing as artists by exploring different sounds, influences or whatever they’ll hear people whining about wanting things the way they used to be. A lot of purists hated it when KISS took off their makeup, but they deserved respect for doing something different and trying to forge a new artistic path. On the other hand, if a band *doesn’t* do anything new and keeps playing their old stuff in the same way ad nausium they’re branded as a nostalgia act. Think KISS now”Gene Simmons eventually made the calculated, slightly cynical decision that commerce trumped art. Hes now content with giving fans the best representation of the KISS that their nostalgic desires long for”to the extent of dressing a new guitarist and drummer up like Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Hes not breaking new ground as an artist, but he is backing a Brinks truck up to the Simmons household every night.

Axl Rose could have taken the same route with Guns n Roses. Patch things up with former lead guitarist Slash and they could have toured forever playing the old songs for nostalgic fans and made a ridiculous amount of money. To some extent, Slash has chosen this route with his band Velvet Revolver. They play similar blues based hard rock to vintage GnR, and brought in former Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland on vocals (who sounded almost just like Axl on a number of the early STP songs)

Axl refused to play the nostalgia game. Hes a very talented guy, but he doesnt have much of a knack for self promotion or media spin. While he worked on putting together a new version of the band and recording Chinese Democracy he let a variety of interests”not the least of which were his old bandmates”control the media spin. As a result, people had been brainwashed into thinking that the album was a stinker before it was even finished.

In a lot of ways, ‘Chinese Democracy’ builds upon the variety and complexity of the two ‘Use Your Illusion’ albums. Like ‘Illusion’, the album grows and evolves with repeated listening.

On Chinese Democracy thats definitely the case”the best example being the song Better. Axl claims that he doesnt try to write hit singles and thats probably the case, but in addition to being an impressive tour de force for Robin Finck on guitar it may be the catchiest pop song since The Killers first album.

One of the real triumphs of Chinese Democracy is the difficulty that a listener has in pigeonholing the songs. There’s definitely a lot of the Elton John-esque piano material first heard on the ‘Use Your Illusion’ releases but overall its evident that the band is breaking entirely new musical ground and even they don’t really know where they’ll end up.

Unfortunately, ‘Chinese Democracy’ is occasionally plagued by overproduction”biggest case in point Madagascar which the band has been playing live for the better part of this decade. The album version doesnt quite have the edge or raw emotion that was on display when played live. This really isn’t surprising for an album that has taken so long to make and has gone through a number of producers.

Thats a very small complaint about what is overall an amazing album. Theres nothing nostalgic about ‘Chinese Democracy., just the sound of a great band breaking new ground.
