Choosing New Pickups For Your Guitar
The sensual and beautiful squeal of electric guitars was the biggest contribution to rock and roll. During the 1950′s, this sound was being tried and then in the 60′s and 1970′s, that sound was added to until it transformed into rock and roll. The crispness of sound that comes out of an electric guitar is simply beautiful. It is amazing to imagine where music would be today if it hadn’t been for the invention of the electric guitar; a terrible idea. A band that doesn’t have an electric guitar is like a kid without its mother.
Electric guitars come in several different contours, sizes, colors, and designs. Some people have the belief that it does not matter what electric guitar that is used because they all are the same thing. This is just false; brand, size, pickups, and neck matter in the sound that is made. Because of this, certain brands of electric guitars have been the choice for decades because of the precision that is put into making them. However, the most important part to the sound made is the pickups.
Whether starting a brand new band, jamming solo, or adding more guitars to your band’s collection, you should be aware of the different kinds of pickups on electric guitars before you go out and purchase one. Many stores will be ok with you to try them and can be very helpful in providing information and assisting one in choosing the perfect electric guitar. Make sure to learn about the differences in pickups. Thetypes of pickups for electric guitars are:
* Single Coil Pickups – This pickup has a single coil. This kinds of pickup remains the oldest of electric guitar arrangements. When using a single coil pickup, the sound is drowned by other frequencies in the air which make a humming sound. These types of pickups are rarely seen today but are the choice of a few very well known rockers because of the old style sound they give.
* Humbucker Pickups – This type of pickup has two coils wherein the unwanted hum of the single coil pickup is eliminated. Basically, the coil carries two signals: one that the music is producing and one that cancels out the hum. The actual piece in this arrangement is called a Humbucker which was patented in 1954. The humbucker is basically the arrangement of two coils.
* Double Coil Pickups – This type in pickups, like the name, consist of two coils. But, for some reason, guitarists do enjoy the hum sound from time to time so the double coil pickup electric guitars usually come with a switch that can cancel the second coil.
There are of other contributors that go into the sound an electric guitar makes. But, pickups are the sound makers. Other things like: neck length, shape, material, frets, and tuners are also important for sound but not like the pickups. For a very long time, musicians have been trying new things in hopes to finding the perfect guitar to make the perfect sound. Rock and roll has transformed in some ways but in different ways it has not.
