The Best MMORPGs Ever

by Eric McCormick

There has been a new influx of online role-playing games for the PC. There are now many free MMORPGs available, as well as pay-to-play MMORPGs. The pay-to-play model allows companies to put massive manpower and resources behind creating some of the best games ever. Here is a list of some of the top MMORPGs out right now.

World of Warcraft - Definitely the number MMORPG on the market right now. World of Warcraft and its expansion packs have become a cult phenomenon in the world. They have pushed the boundries of what a successful MMORPG can become. Blizzard has done a wonderful job with this fantasy-based game and shows no signs of slowing down in the near future.

Lord of the Rings Online - Marketed as a more mainstream game when compared to others, Lord of the Rings Online has captured the imaginations of Middle-earth and J.R. Tolkien fans. The game is primarily PvE-based. It was originally released in 2007 has has garnered high reviews and fan praise since its release.

Eve Online - One of the longest running MMORPGs available today. Eve Online is a sci-fi online roleplaying game. It is well known for its almost true to life corporate and industrial espionage stories. The game is known to be one of the biggest time sinks in the industry, but has garnered a cult following amongst its fans.

Final Fantasy XI - Currently, FFXI is the lone representation in the MMORPG market for the massively successful Final Fantasy series. The game is hugely popular in both Asia and North America. It has released multiple successful expansion packs and still maintains a current and steady player-base, even after being out on the market for several years.

Warhammer Online - The biggest PvP-based game on this list. Warhammer Online failed to debut as highly as it was anticipated, but the game’s subscriber base has leveled off and its initial growing pains have subsided. The game wasn’t the World of Warcraft “killer” that it was supposed to be, but has still garnered quite a solid reputation and fan support.

City of Heroes / City of Villains - The original superheroes MMORPG. City of Heroes and City of Villains will soon see competition in the superhero RPG market from Champions Online and DC Universe Online. It remains to be seen whether the game will continue to do as well as it has, or fade off into the sunset.

There are many other great MMORPGs that are not listed here. One of the most anticipated games in the industry is currently Star Wars: The Old Republic. It has a tentative release date of late 2010. It will be the first MMORPG will full character speech support integrated into the game. Hopefully, other games in the industry will continue to push the envelope like these great games.

Live Life More Fully

by Liz Thompson

Well-respected consultant/advisor Dr. Jean Houston is known for her work with the United Nations, the Dalai Lama, past presidents and first ladies, corporations, and government agencies. She has taught and spoken at many colleges world-wide, and she is also a past president of the Association of Humanistic Psychology.

Jean and her husband, Dr. Robert Masters, founded the Foundation for Mind Research together more than 40 years ago. Jean is also a principal teacher at The Mystery School, which she founded over 25 years ago. The Mystery School is known for teaching mystic and spiritual studies.

Some of Dr. Houstons books include Jump Time, A Mythic Life: Learning to Live Our Greater Story,” The Search for the Beloved, Mystical Dogs: Animals as Guides to Our Inner Life, and Women of Wisdom: Empowering the Dreams and Spirit of Women.” She has published more than 25 in all.

Jean Houston started life a bit differently than most children. By the time she was 12 years old, she had been to more than 20 schools across America. The schools of the 1940s and 1950s were very different from schools today. Attending a school in Mississippi was nothing like one in Minnesota.

The reason for Dr. Houstons extensive travel during childhood was her fathers profession as a comedy writer. He wrote for celebrities like Bob Hope. Jean would occasionally attend the same school twice, and she began to notice that the fire for knowledge in young childrens eyes was missing or dimmed in older childrens eyes. She longed to change that.

Two experiences played a major role in shaping Jean Houstons life. Without them, who knows where she would be today? First, she recalls an encounter with a ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen, and his dummy, Charlie McCarthy. Edgar many times would ask Charlie questions like, What is love? and What is the meaning of life?

What caught Jeans attention was the conversation her father had with Edgar. Edgar knew that everything Charlie said was coming from his brain (because Charlie isnt real), but he still insisted that he had no idea what Charlie would say until he said it. It was like another brilliant dimension of reality.

The second experience that impacted Jeans life was a visit with Helen Keller. Helen was both blind and deaf from birth, yet she was able to communicate with others and lead a full, successful life. Jean asked her why she was so happy, and Helen replied that she lived each day as if it were her last. Life and all of its moments are so full of glory.

Ciro’s Nightclub: An Icon Of Entertainment History

by Ross Everett

Today, the Comedy Story sits on the same spot and has for over twenty years. In it’s earlier incarnation it was Ciro’s, and it was for a time the center of the entertainment universe.

From the early 1940’s until it closed on the eve of the 1960’s, Ciro’s launched countless entertainment icons along the path to superstardom. It was one of the first major venues to host Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin before they took over the comedy world in 1950. A year later, an unheralded opening act called the Will Mastin Trio stole the show from the headliner. This was due in large part to a young entertainer that would before long outgrow his membership in the group–arguably the most talented entertainer in show biz history, Sammy Davis, Jr. After the car accident that cost Sammy his right eye, it was the site of his return to live performing. Countless other top entertainers performed there, from Sinatra sidekick comic Joe E. Louis to Nat King Cole.

The regulars at Ciro’s comprised a mind boggling array of the greatest entertainers in history–Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant, Judy Garland and countless others. It became the clubhouse for the Hollywood elite to drink, mingle and network.

During a more civilized time, a network of top nightclubs hosted entertainment, drinking, dining and other hijinx in the major cities of the US. Ciro’s was among this elite group of nightspots dating back to the early 1940’s when the icons of that era including Bogart, Jimmy Cagney, Lauren Bacall and George Raft would frequent the place. It started to ‘cool off’ and by 1942 was forced to close its doors for a time. It didn’t stay closed for long, as Herman Hoover implemented his plan to re-open and revitalize the nightspot.

Hoover, who had a background in running a nightclub”he was lured away from Columbia Universitys Law School by the potent mix of wiseguys and chorus girls at New Yorks Silver Slipper, which was a prohibition era joint owned by Arnold Rothstein and Charles Lucky Luciano among others. Hoover became a fixture at the club, along with Harlems Cotton Club before moving to Los Angeles in 1936.

Ciro’s reopened on the day after Christmas, 1942. The headliner that night was Sinatra crony Joe E. Lewis and the crowd included the aforementioned “Chairman of the Board” along with Mickey Rooney, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Cary Grant. Xavier Cugat was next to headline (he’d later to on to marry 1970’s gameshow fixture “Charo”) and became a regular.

Hoover had hosted Dean Martins wedding in 1949 to second wife Jeanne, and Martin and Lewis debuted at Ciros in 1950. They remained loyal to Hoover and his club, and even when they were pulling down an astounding (for the 1950s) $100,000 a week to perform they insisted on holding their fee at Ciros to what they were originally paid–$7,000 a week. Sammy Davis, Jr. got his start at Ciro’s and returned to the stage after his mid 1950’s car accident in what may have been the biggest event ever at the club. Following an introduction by Frank Sinatra, Davis put on a scorching performance before an adoring and emotional crowd of the biggest stars on the planet.

Ironically, the growth of the desert gambling oasis to the east would eventually spell the end for Ciro’s and the nightclub circuit nationwide. Las Vegas simply had the money, connections and amenities to lure away the best talent to play in its showrooms. Headliners didn’t have to travel to earn a tidy sum as casino headliners, and they were able to live the showbiz life 24 hours a day in “Paris in the Desert.” Eventually Ciro’s closed its doors in 1957 and was sold at a public auction two years later.

It was also the end of an era for the city of Los Angeles. It remained a vital thoroughfare in the city, but the glamorous array of nightclubs, bars and restaurants gave way to a tacky mishmash of strip clubs, tattoo parlors and fast food restaurants. Although the street would experience yet other revolution in the 1980’s, when Wolfgang Puck’s Spago put Los Angeles at the center of the culinary universe it was never the same after the passing of Ciro’s. It’s tradition of launching young talent on the path to superstardom continues to this day, however–the Comedy Store has operated on the same site for nearly 30 years now. If you name any major comedy star, chances are they got their start at the club or at the very least performed there when they were ‘nobody’.

A Basic Guide To Playing The Ponies

by Ross Everett

Sports gambling is a popular pursuit because everyone understands the basics of how teams win and lose and why. Horses, meanwhile, are an entirely different animal”no pun intended. It is a complex discipline unto itself, and a sound background in handicapping sports doesn’t insure success, or even mediocrity in handicapping the ponies. In fact, the history of sports betting is replete with successful gamblers that had a weakness for horse betting, with an emphasis on the word weakness. Most notable, perhaps, is the former resident handicapper at CBS, Jimmy The Greek Snyder. The story goes that The Greek was a first rate sports handicapper, but he couldn’t pick the winner of a one horse race when playing the ponies. The bad news for The Greek is that he enjoyed playing the ponies nonetheless, and often frittered away the money he won at the other end of the sportsbook.

The information below is the bare bones basics of what you need to know to enjoy a day at the horse track. If you’re interested in becoming a serious horse handicapper, you’re best advice to start with one of the countless books or DVDs that deal specifically with the discipline.

Do your reading: When you arrive at the horse track you should purchase a copy of the Daily Racing Form (DRF for short) and the track program. The DRF is basically the ‘bible’ of horse race handicapping, and offers morning line odds, horse, trainer, jockey statistics and information on each race at every major track across the country. The track program offers similar information for that individual venue, often in more ‘user friendly’ form.

The House Doesn’t Care Who Wins: One thing that is important for the sports bettor to remember when playing the horses is that its a parimutuel situation. In other words, you’re not playing against the house, you’re playing against the other bettors. The track just facilitates the betting and acts as a middleman, handling the money for a fee (15 to 25 percent of the parimutuel pool). Another difference is that the track odds are determined by how much money is bet on each horse. If everyone bets on one horse”whether it is the best horse, or just has the catchiest name”it will go off as the favorite. Long odds on a horse doesn’t necessarily indicate a bad horse, but just one that the wagering public isn’t investing in. Sometimes this can be one and the same, but not always.

So where do the odds in the newspaper or program come from? The so-called morning odds are basically educated guesses as to where the wagering will go. Its roughly analogous to overnight lines in sports gambling. They can be helpful as a guideline, but may or may not be indicative as to how the actual wagering will go.

The Basics of Handicapping: Even expert handicappers approach the sport differently and, like his sports gambling counterpart, may place greater emphasis on the importance of certain data than other handicappers. Some handicappers place a great deal of weight on a horses past performances, including the quality of opposition hes run against. Others place greater value on recent workouts, and still others go to the paddock to eyeball the horses and try to determine which ones are ready to run.

Once a handicapper gets an idea what will happen in the race, he has to factor the available odds into the proposition. A favorite may be an unattractive wagering prospect due to a prohibitively high price, while a long shot may be a good wagering value based on a high potential payback. It all boils down to wagering value, which is simply a matter of doing a math. Teaching the youth of America solid math skills is crucial for no other reason than to help them gamble effectively and profitably.

Trainers and breeding: Some handicappers prioritize a horse’s breeding background–considering his bloodlines and the competitive quality of his parents and grandparents. Then training must be considered–a good trainer can often get a horse to ‘over perform’ much in the same way a good coach can get the most out of his team in sports.

The Jockeys: In the simplest terms, jockeys are independent contractors and thus to make money they need to do well. In theory, a jockey wants to get on the best horse possible in each race to maximize his chances of winning. That also results in sort of a chicken and the egg conundrum”are the horses winning because the best jockeys are aboard, or are the best jockeys merely adept at getting on the best horses? Most serious horse players look to the jockey as a secondary consideration. Its sort of a situation where a good jockey cant win with a bad horse, but a bad jockey can cause a good horse not to win.

Dedication and Discipline: There’s not a set formula for successful horse handicapping, so try different things and find what works for you. And, as always, don’t go overboard with the money you wager and particularly until you get a feel for what you’re doing. If you’re interested in learning more, check out the Daily Racing Form website.

Remake Of Nightmare On Elm Street To Hit Theaters April 16, 2010

by Nataly Mared

It happens when you dream and it’s happening AGAIN! The remake of Wes Craven’s cult classic “Nightmare On Elm Street” wrapped production on July 10, 2009 and it’s set to hit theaters on April 16, 2010. Are you ready? You may never sleep again!

One, Two…Freddy’s Coming For You…. The original Nightmare On Elm Street, written and directed by Wes Craven and produced by New Line Cinema, was released in 1984 and featured a group of high school kids being terrorized in their dreams by the Ghost »”>ghost of child murderer, Freddy Krueger. Wes Craven’s production of Nightmare On Elm Street grossed over $25 million at U.S. box offices and has become one of the most popular horror movies of all time, with it’s villian, Freddy Krueger, becoming one of the most well recognized movie villains of cinematic history. The premise of the film is the question of distinction between dreams and reality. Is never sleeping again the only way to end the terror?

Three, Four…Better Lock Your Door… The origin of Nightmare On Elm Street lies in several experiences from Wes Craven’s childhood. His inspiration for the basis of the film lies in several articles printed by the LA Times on a group of Cambodian refugees and their children, who were were suffering horrific nightmares, after which they refused to sleep. Acting on medical advice, their parents encouraged them to do so. However, each of the children died in their sleep soon after, following the second dream. The name for serial child murderer, Freddy Krueger, was taken from a bully that Craven went to school with, Fred Krueger. And, initially, Fred Krueger was intended to be a child molester but the character was changed to a child murderer due to some highly publicized child molestation cases that were going on in California at the time of production.

Five, Six…Grab Your Crucifix… And who IS this Freddy Krueger guy? Krueger was the child of a nun, Amanda Krueger, who was violently raped by one hundred raving maniacs. As a child, he was constantly ridiculed for his infamous and brutal conception and it was then that he started murdering small animals. After suffering abuse from his stepfather for many years, he killed him with a razor. Thus began his killing spree. After being aquitted of the murder of several children in Springwood, Ohio, the angry parents followed Krueger to his hideout and burned it to the ground, with him in it. Ever since that night, Krueger has taken his revenge on the parents of Springwood by stalking their children through their dreams.

Seven, Eight…Gonna Stay Up Late…Platinum Dunes is producing a remake of Nightmare On Elm Street and will keep the original high school setting. The reboot, directed by Samuel Bayer and written by Wesley Strick, (”Arachniphobia” , “Cape Fear”) based on Wes Craven’s own adaptation, portrays Freddy as a child molester, the way Craven originally intended. The biggest difference, however, is in Freddy himself. Played this time by Oscar nominee Jackie Earl Haley, Freddy will be quieter…but deadlier! (Coincidentally, Haley auditioned for a role in the original Nightmare On Elm Street but was beat out by his friend, Johnny Depp, who just went along for the company!)

Nine, Ten….Never Sleep Again! So mark your calendars, folks! April 16, 2010 is the date…can you stay awake that long? Freddy’s betting you can’t!

Enjoy Paris City Breaks

by Oliver Garrett

Paris is the perfect location for romantic city breaks or a short getaway with your family. It has always been an easy city to access for short breaks, but now that the Eurostar only takes two and a quarter hours from London there is no excuse not to take a break here - you could even go for a day and night out and make it back home in 24 hours.

Staying for only one day is really pushing it a bit, but it is more than feasible, however what could be better than popping off to the City of Light for a quick weekend away. You don’t have to trouble yourself with hours and hours of traveling time, just plan a weekend of sleep, walking, fun, good food and wine, great views and shopping of course.

Paris is all about art, fun, walking, great views, food, wine and of course shopping. The Louvre has been there forever and will more than likely remain forever, so if only have a short time, forget about it for the time being, set a day aside in the future for that visit. Chose carefully what you want to do!

You may have a favorite quartier of the city and if so make sure you stay there, if not then try the Rive Gauche. However don’t do the Rive Gauche on a Sunday or Monday as many of the facilities are closed on these two days, including museums and shops.

Choose ahead of time what restaurants you want to visit and try to avoid the Brassiers. Many of these have become chain managed restaurants and the food is very predictable and in some instances awful.

LeTimbre is a privately owned restaurant with a stunning view, it is very small, owned and managed by a self taught chef from Manchester. He manages to cook for 24 people and run his restaurant with absolutely no help and the food is divine. La Cerisaie is also a genuine privately owned restaurant with a cupboard sized kitchen which manages to produce the food of the gods.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Preview

by Dave Taylor

Infinity Ward, developer of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, returns with this year’s Modern Warfare 2, after last year’s Call of Duty game came from the series’ other developer, Treyarch. Activision has confidently stated that it expects Modern Warfare to be the biggest games launch ever seen.

That’s a bold assertion, because for a start the original Modern Warfare sold an incredible 12 million copies, and for another thing, Activision has raised the price for Modern Warfare 2 to a premium. Which means that Modern Warfare 2 is expected to shift more units with a higher price tag.

Still, there’s reason for gamers to be pleased with this because it’s evidence that Activision believes it has a very good game on its hands. Modern Warfare 2 combines the same stalwarts of the series, and indeed an successful videogame, single player and multiplayer, and it was the latter that prompted the success of the original Modern Warfare.

There has been multiplayer video footage shown off by Infinity Ward - demoing the new chain bonus, and the truth is that it does look great. All the graphics have been improved and polished since Modern Warfare, although there are still some concerns voiced on the internet forums about details on some of the snow levels.

There’s more detail, more destructive effects for environment, smoother animation and lots of bullets. So far, Modern Warfare 2 looks very much like the original with the volume turned up. The only downside on visual so far is that the console version won’t render at HD resolution, but at the same 1024×600 that the original Modern Warfare ran at.

All that we know about the Single Player game is that gameplay will vary from mission to mission and that the locations will take gamers from Afghanistan and its deserts to Russia and its frozen mountains.

As with the rest of Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward looks to have taken the successful elements from its predecessor and then looked to improve on them. It’s more of the same, for sure, but better, and that’s likely to be a big draw for gamers.

Modern Warfare 2 is due out 10th November 2009 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Get Best Discount Offers Online To Buy Digital Cameras

by Dan Feildman

“Digital” has become a keyword to every consumer product today. From TV to music system, from food processing to engine ignition, everything is getting digital. But one consumer product which has gained immense boost by the digital revolution is the camera.

The way we take photographs has changed dramatically with the advent of the digital camera and manufacturers have taken advantage of this by developing a wide array of digital cameras. No longer are we dependent upon film and photo processing and people have found they are addicted to the instant gratification that comes from seeing the photo the instant we take it.

Increased consumer demand as well as the variety of choices available has given consumers something they never dreamed of, amazing discounts. Because of this you can get more bang for your computer buck and purchase an incredible camera that will meet all your needs.

If you are in the market to purchase a new digital camera you will find that there are some incredible bargains on great cameras. Yet, you may be asking yourself, where do you find the discounted digital cameras? This article is designed to point you in the right direction so you can find exactly what you are looking for at a price that will make you smile.

One of the best ways to find discounts on the digital cameras is through the Internet. There is no faster and comprehensive medium like Internet. Here you can search for discounts on different types of digital cameras. Moreover there are thousands of sites which deal with digital cameras and offer discounts on these cameras. Plus there are several online stores and online retailers who also offer discounts on some models of the digital cameras.

With the availability of so many choices on the net, you can easily compare the discount rates offered by different online retailers on the model which has similar features. For example you want a 3.0 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom and a 2 inch LCD monitor and an aperture range from f/2.0-f/8.0. Now there would be different companies which would offer different discount rates on the cameras with same features. With different options available, you can easily buy a camera from a store which offers the best bargain to you.

Along with finding discounts you will also want to check out online reviews of the different cameras and manufacturers. These are important so you purchase the camera that will best meet your needs and last long enough for you to get your money’s worth.

You can also look for web sites that will ask for exactly what you are looking for and then take you to a page that has only those cameras along with the price. They might ask for your required megapixel range, zoom range, flash, memory, exposure and size. After you finish filling these details, the web sites would display the results of the cameras including these features, along with the discount offers.

If you don’t have access to the internet you will need to rely on the local phone book. This is a bit more difficult as you will need to find discount dealers and then contact each one. I recommend that you check out the stores yourself, to compare the rates and then go back to a certain shop which offers you the best discounts. Obviously this method requires a lot of time, money and patience. Moreover the discount that you would get won’t be much of a difference to the market price.

So if you want to buy digital cameras on discount, you can prefer any of the two options. But keeping in mind the convenience and swiftness of results, the Internet is unarguably the best place to buy the discounted digital cameras.
