Over the years, children’s birthday parties have become extravagant extravaganzas. The repetition fits, as any party-sponsoring parent can attest. Party foods, birthday cake, entertainment and other costs can quickly add up. If a child’s birthday party is held outside the home, the venue adds to the cost significantly.
Besides the actual party costs, the take-home gifts for guests have become a likely addition to the birthday party budget. At most children’s birthday parties, the birthday child is not the only gift recipient anymore. Young guests often eagerly await the take-home treat bags, which may be filled with candy, toys, temporary tattoos, stickers, prizes and other items.
How can you create terrific take-home party favors without busting your birthday party budget? How about making your own super surprises for your young birthday party guests?
Try these five fine favors for children’s birthday parties.
Do-It-Yourself Birthday Party Favor Bubbles
Kids of all ages love to play with bubbles. Why not mix up your own big bucket of bubbles for your child’s summer birthday party? Bubble blowing is a super outdoor activity.
Try this simple and inexpensive bubble recipe.
2 cups of lemon hand-dish washing soap
6 cups of lukewarm water
cup of light corn syrup
Stir all ingredients gently in a large pitcher or plastic bucket.
For take-home party favor fun, pour your homemade bubble juice into baby food jars. Seal the lids tightly. Bend a small piece of gardening wire into a loop, or use a chenille (pipe cleaner) stem, to create a small bubble wand. Tie or tape a bubble wand to each jar of bubbles to complete the bubbly homemade party favor.
Do-It-Yourself Birthday Party Favor Lollipop Cookies
Pick your favorite sugar cookie recipe, and bake the cookies as usual. Immediately after removing the baking sheets from the oven, place a wooden craft (or popsicle) stick into each cookie. Allow cookies to cool completely and harden somewhat before handling them again.
Carefully seal each cooled cookie in clear plastic wrap. Tie a ribbon around each lollipop cookie, or fasten it with a twist tie for a super homemade take-home party favor.
Lollipop cookies also make wonderful classroom treats for children’s birthdays and other occasions.
Do-It-Yourself Birthday Party Favor Photo Magnets
Do you have a digital camera and a computer printer? If so, you can make super simple homemade birthday party take-home party favors that serve as souvenirs of the occasion.
Just snap a photo of each birthday party guest during the festivities. Print out the pictures on cardstock paper. Trim each page to create individual photos.
Use a hot-melt glue gun or strong craft glue to fasten small magnets to the backs of the photos. Once the glue has dried, you can distribute the photo magnets to your young birthday party guests as terrific homemade take-home party favors.
Where can you get great craft magnets? Craft stores sell rolls of magnetic strips, which you can cut into single portions. Of course, you can cut costs by using direct-mail advertising magnets, which seem to accumulate on family refrigerators as well. Once the magnets have been affixed to the children’s photos, their original contents will no longer show.
Do-It-Yourself Birthday Party Favor Play Clay
What child does not enjoy the terrific tactile experience of playing with clay?
Certainly, individual tubs of play clay are available at party supply shops, discount stores and other outlets. Still, you can save lots of money by mixing up your own batch for party fun and take-home party favors.
Here’s a simple homemade play clay recipe I have used for many years.
1 cup flour
1/2 cup table salt
1 cup lukewarm water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Cook play clay mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly. Once mixture forms a uniform lump, remove it from the heat, and allow it to cool completely.
Add food coloring in your choice of colors to individual portions of play clay, and place them into zippered plastic bags. What a wonderful homemade take-home party favor for a birthday party guest. Be sure to remind children (and parents) to refrigerate their play clay between uses, so it will stay fresh for several weeks.
Do-It-Yourself Birthday Party Favor Take-Home Treat Bags
Of course, young birthday party guests will need some sort of packaging for their super homemade take-home party favors.
Gift bags can be quite costly. Why not pick up several brown (or plain white) lunch bags or simple solid craft bags and decorate them yourself? Better yet, offer your young birthday party guests several crayons and markers, so they can decorate their own take-home treat bags? Toss in some stickers, if you wish.
Sometimes the best party favors are homemade.
With a little ingenuity and advanced planning, you can give your child’s birthday party guests plenty of super take-home party favors without spending a fortune on cheap plastic throw-aways. Why not make your party favors extra memorable by creating them yourself?
