The trio of billiard games are a family of three types of games where a person playing tries to hit the ball into a second ball, series of balls, or into a pocket. The games have one commonality: they are all played on a heavy, slate table covered in fabric. Another commonality is that they are all played with a stick that has a leather tip. This stick is for hitting to spearhead the ball and smash this ball into another ball, balls, or pocket.

This series of table games was first thought of in the fourteenth century in some nations of Europe. But, there is heavily debates over the exact birthplace of these games, Paris or the United Kingdom seem to be thought of as the birthplace. Either way, by the 1500′s, these games were popular and were played throughout the world in all the bars and drinking establishments everywhere.

Billiard balls have been composed of multitude of materials throughout the years since the games were invented. In its early days, the contest was played with clay fabricated stones. And, in the 19th century, the balls were manufactured from ivory from elephant tusks. After this, elephants were being slaughtered at an alarming rate, and because of this, people began seeking other material to make the balls. And then in the 19th century, billiard balls were fabricated out of Celluloid, the first type of plastic harvested for production of goods. After this time, experiments were completed to discover the building of billiard balls from a multitude of different plastics. In these times, billiard balls are constructed of a plastic resin containing Saluc, clear acrylic, and polyester molds.

Billiards is a fun game that is available in drinking establishments, clubs, bowling allies, lounges, and other places of entertainment and leisure. Many of these centers display a sign showing billiards for the venue but all do not know what this word is. Billiard games are not always pool as most think. There are actually three individual games that billiards consist of, they are:

* Carom Billiards – This game is played without spots to drop the ball into and opponents are to hit balls against the railing or a series of bumpers. Carom is played with three or four balls depending on which Carom game it is – the games are: balkline, three-rail, or straight rail. In this series of contests, there is a cue ball for each player and an object ball; in some contests there are a couple of object balls it is 4-ball Carom.

* Pocket Billiards – Pocket Billiards is the most common among billiard games that are played nowadays. In some countries, this game is known as Pool. In the U.S., when you say “billiards,” they mean pool. In this game, there are 15 balls that are numbered and have different colors and one solid, white ball named the cue ball. Games of Pool are: Nine Ball, Eight Ball, and One-Pocket.

* Snooker – This billiard game consists of 22 balls, of which 15 are typically red balls. The other balls are labeled with numbers to indicate points; each color has its own point value. The game of Snooker has a white cue ball for each player.

Billiards is a very popular series of games played by people of all nations and cultures. When visiting pubs, bars, and establishments throughout the world, you can see a variation of these games with a variation of different sized tables and a difference in rules depending on the nation. Billiards is great fun and will be a permanent fixture in places throughout the globe.
