Unusual Scottish Vacations
Scotland offers the most glorious countryside in Great Britain making it a most amazing holiday destination. Countless visitors decide upon Edinburgh as their primary destination, while a smaller number decide upon something a bit different. With an immensely diverse countryside the range of things to do is endless. Climbing mountains is highly popular, as are hill walking vacations. The most common vacations are golf or fishing. With Scotland being the home of golfing it should not surprise you that that you are hardly ever too far from a minimum of one superb golf course. With the Rivers Spey, Tweed and Tay you almost guaranteed of an excellent day fishing. But what if you want a vacation with a difference?
Large numbers of folk are choosing music festivals their annual vacation. Although most music festivals are huge with a focus upon making money, there are a small number of family orientated music festival, such as the Wickerman Festival and Tartan Heart.
More of a music and arts festival, the yearly Wickerman festival is held on farm land close to the village of Dundrennan, Dumfries & Galloway about 5m away from the town of Kirkcudbright in Scotland. The festival theme is the cult classic film, “The Wicker Man” which the stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt and Britt Ekland.
The first Wickerman Festival was held in the month of July two thousand and two and was put together by a local man called Sid Ambrose. With no experience of organizing a very large event it is a surprise that it is still held today, especially when you consider the present economic climate. The Wickerman Festival has changed each year and, like the film, has a cult following.
Wickerman is hugely family friendly it has numerous activities for children including, fairground rides, a mountain biking trail, face painting and various workshops. This can be easily verified by simply searching for photos of the Wickerman Festival 2009 or alternatively visit the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.
Not too far from the site of the festival is Kirkudbright where you will find many of the locations used in the film including Harbour Cottage (the bakery) and High Street Gallery which was used for the post office and sweetshop. You will discover that there are a great many places of interest in the region and it is well worth having a short vacation here so that you can visit all of the tourist attractions. Common places in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Bed and breakfast accommodation in Scotland is nearly always first class and is also very affordable and much less expensive than staying in a hotel.
