Live Life More Fully
Well-respected consultant/advisor Dr. Jean Houston is known for her work with the United Nations, the Dalai Lama, past presidents and first ladies, corporations, and government agencies. She has taught and spoken at many colleges world-wide, and she is also a past president of the Association of Humanistic Psychology.
Jean and her husband, Dr. Robert Masters, founded the Foundation for Mind Research together more than 40 years ago. Jean is also a principal teacher at The Mystery School, which she founded over 25 years ago. The Mystery School is known for teaching mystic and spiritual studies.
Some of Dr. Houstons books include Jump Time, A Mythic Life: Learning to Live Our Greater Story,” The Search for the Beloved, Mystical Dogs: Animals as Guides to Our Inner Life, and Women of Wisdom: Empowering the Dreams and Spirit of Women.” She has published more than 25 in all.
Jean Houston started life a bit differently than most children. By the time she was 12 years old, she had been to more than 20 schools across America. The schools of the 1940s and 1950s were very different from schools today. Attending a school in Mississippi was nothing like one in Minnesota.
The reason for Dr. Houstons extensive travel during childhood was her fathers profession as a comedy writer. He wrote for celebrities like Bob Hope. Jean would occasionally attend the same school twice, and she began to notice that the fire for knowledge in young childrens eyes was missing or dimmed in older childrens eyes. She longed to change that.
Two experiences played a major role in shaping Jean Houstons life. Without them, who knows where she would be today? First, she recalls an encounter with a ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen, and his dummy, Charlie McCarthy. Edgar many times would ask Charlie questions like, What is love? and What is the meaning of life?
What caught Jeans attention was the conversation her father had with Edgar. Edgar knew that everything Charlie said was coming from his brain (because Charlie isnt real), but he still insisted that he had no idea what Charlie would say until he said it. It was like another brilliant dimension of reality.
The second experience that impacted Jeans life was a visit with Helen Keller. Helen was both blind and deaf from birth, yet she was able to communicate with others and lead a full, successful life. Jean asked her why she was so happy, and Helen replied that she lived each day as if it were her last. Life and all of its moments are so full of glory.
