In other words, you’re betting you’ll roll a 7 before you roll an 8 in this case.

For instance:

The dealer has the black “off” marker on the table, and everybody bets. The shooter rolls the “come out” dice and gets a 7, so everybody wins except for the “don’t pass” bettors, which means the opposite- they lose.

The game goes again but the shooter rolls a 6 this time. The “off” marker is flipped over to white and the “on” side and placed by the 6. Now the shooter will continue to roll, and everyone who bet on the “pass” line fervently hopes the shooter will get a 6 before rolling a 7, because then the will all win. He does and everyone is happy-except the “don’t pass” bettors who lose.

Continue on for another round with the shooter rolling a 5 this time around. The “on” marker gets placed by the 5. Now the people who placed bets on the “pass” line hope the shooter will roll a 5 before he rolls a 7. But it is not meant to be. The shooter rolls a 7 first. So now everyone loses. Except those betters that bet on the “don’t pass” line. This time they win.
