My Tour To Potala Palace

by James Ashe

We wake up to our third day in this amazing city, Lhasa. We both got to sleep in from our night of singing and partying at Music Bar, and push ourselves to stumble over for breakfast at 9:30am! The whole group eventually lumbers in, groggy but happy, we laugh about last nights fun and eat a Chinese breakfast. There are fruit and snacks stands right outside our hotel so we pick some up, and water, lots of water our guide reminds us. Then all twenty-two of us hop on a bus and drive the fifteen minute drive to the most recognizable landmark in Lhasa, and all of Tibet, the Potala Palace.

The incredible Potala Palace is built on Lhasas highest point and if you have seen any movie about Tibet you have seen the Potala Palace. It is considered to be the center for both spiritual and political power for Tibetans. These days the Palace is home to less than twenty Tibetan monks, there used to be several thousand here, and it is rumored to have over 1,500 rooms. Today only a small portion of it is available to the public.

Our guide fills us in as we climb the hundreds of steep steps up to the entrance. We are sweating, huffing and puffing madly as we try to catch our breaths and remain together as a group up to the entrance. I take a second to look around and discover the views are spectacular even only half way up – the small traditional Tibetan section of Lhasa can be seen clearly from this view as smoke from the Juniper branches burns in huge incense burners and rises into the sky. Everyone is taking as many pictures as possible but there are armed Chinese guards at every corner the higher up we go. They relax and lounge about arrogantly, then whisper to each other as groups of visitors pass.

The first palace was built by Songsten Gampo in 631, and it was merged into the tri-colored building that exists today. There is a white palace, a red palace, and a yellow palace. I only heard about the white and red sections but Im sure we saw some of the yellow areas too. There is the White Palace, built in 1645, which is the entrance to the main building. The white area houses the Eastern Sunshine Apartment where the 14th Dalai Lama spent most of his time, the Eastern Courtyard which was nice because of the splendid views but had too many Chinese guards loitering around to be enjoyable. We did find it hilarious that 99% of the bathrooms in China are squat style but the Dalai Lama himself had a more civilized, western-style toilet.

We go past the four Heavenly King Murals which are sumptuous, and on up and up into the Red Palace, 1693, which includes the Maitreya Chapel, the famous golden roofs (actually copper), and the Chapel of the 5th Dalai Lama and the 13th Dalai Lama. The 5th Dalai Lamas chapel contains a Stupa gilded with around 6,500 lb of gold. We also get to the see the infamous 3-D Mandala. The mandala is an intricate model of a palace covered in precious metals and jewels and highlights the paths to enlightenment. It is very large and obviously priceless.

We were instructed there is to be absolutely no picture taking of the guards, or once we are inside, and we only have 60 minutes exactly inside the palace and then we must be out. here is money swishing around beneath our feet as we climb steps, stop to admire an image, and move on. My head is spinning by the time our hour is up and I have a chance to grab a quick book of one of kind only for sale in the Potala Palace postcards, and we make it out, literally, with two minutes to spare.

Other than the abundance of rules for the Palace; no drinks, no food, no bags, everyone goes through security metal detectors, no pictures, and exactly sixty minutes for our tour, it was particularly beautiful inside and out. When we came out in the back of the palace there is a wonderful view except that 2/3 of Lhasa is all Chinese development now. And from high on the palace it looks like one huge industrial park complete with sickening noise, smoke, and traffic.

My recommend tips: According to the local custom, you have to tour clockwise around; don’t step on the doorsill; don’t smoke in the halls; don’t take photos without permission! It is not easy for visitors to climb to the top building because of its height, so you’d better slow down. Because the halls are always chilly; you’d better take a coat while visiting! Potala Palace is allowed less than 2300 tourists and pilgrims to enter each day. Therefore I suggest you prepare for a successful trip by purchasing tickets beforehand. Please note that when buying your tickets, you have to show your ID card or passport.

WoW Mage Guide – Knowing Different Playing Styles as a Mage

by Vincent Gottfried

Like mages in most other games the mage in WoW has low HP and defense which means if you are an inexperienced player you will fall quickly in battle. Not being able to have a tanking pet makes this a bigger problem.

If you play as a mage, your job is to deal as much damage as you can while stay away from the enemies as best as you can. A mage in a group will be very helpful since they have crowd control abilities and high DPS spells. There are a few playing style depends on which talents tree that you want to focus.

Arcane Mage

An Arcane Mage can burst high DPS (Damage per Second) continuously; even surpass the heavy fire mage which already known for the high fire spell damage. It doesn’t come without price though, you need proper gear and large amount of mana to support this build. These are basic playing style as an Arcane mage:

1. Your main spell will be Arcane Blast, available at level 64; this spell will increase the damage of your arcane spell by 15% as well as increase its own mana cost. You can stack this spell up to three times, giving you a very high damage boost. At the third cast, it increase your base damage by 45% and cost around 56% of your base mana, which will make your mana pool suffer if you do it without proper gear.

2. Once you powered yourself with 3 times Arcane Blast, Arcane Barrage will be your choice of spell. Cycling between Arcane Blast and Arcane Barrage will give you high DPS while not having to deal with the debuff.

Overcoming the trouble with mana isn’t impossible; you do have a few things you can use: runic mana potions, mana gems, evocation, and mage armor.

Fire Mage

You will be the one that everybody in your group expect to deal the most DPS while they protecting you and while you will not throwing half of your mana for damage boost like an Arcane mage, you still need adequate amount of mana to keep burst high DPS. Also keep in mind that you don?t have the survivability like a Frost mage have, so you will need a little more control skill. These are the basic playing style as a Fire mage:

1. Your primary spell for damage will be Fireball. You won’t want to spam it since it will drain your mana pool. You can mix it with other spells to complement it. With Improved Fireball talent you will lower your cast time which means more DPS.

2. Flamestrike is the best option for AoE (Area of Effect) spells. You can cast it from a long range which will protect you and you can talent it to gain high critical rate.

3. The job of the Fire mage is to deal high damage so you will want to add all talents that will increase damage, such as these: Improved Scorch, Fire Power, Ignite, and Incinerate.

4. You can gain 6 yards of range, and increase your survivability, by adding Flame Throwing. This is a must have talent for your Fire mage.

With high damage as this build?s goal, your next concerns is getting spell damage gear and enchant to boost your total damage output and use it correctly.

Frost Mage

A Frost mage will have increased survivability because you will have spells to kite like the Frostbolt. You will not have problems with mana because frost spells are mana friendly. Even with these advantages, frost spells have lower damage than Fire spells, and they don’t have insane damage boosts like Arcane spells. For this reason be careful how you use your points. Here is a list of basic Frost mage playing style:

1. Your main damage spell is Frostbolt, but the spell is not very effective on its own. Complement it with Frostbite, Ice Shard, Shatter, Piercing Ice, and Frost Channeling will get you a nice damage package. Don?t forget to invest on Improved Frost Bolt; it will reduce your cast time, which means more DPS.

2. Take Blizzard along with Improved Blizzard as this AoE spell will have the effect of lowering target movement.

3. Arctic Reach will add to the distance of your spell so you can stay safely away from your enemies.

4. Frost Nova is the gateway to the Shatter effect.

5. Ice Block is an essential defense skill; you cannot act for the skill duration but in exchange you will immune to everything, clear almost all debuffs, drop all aggro, and give time for your group?s priest to heal you.

Casting Blizzard won’t burst as much damage, but by adding Improved Blizzard, Frostbite, and Shatter you can help out your group since you can kite the whole mob and allow them to be killed by your group.

This is only a basic idea of some of the builds available. In this WoW mage guide I have focused on just one build for each talent tree. There are other creative builds for each playing style like: Arcane-Frost, Fire-Frost, etc. Each build will provide a lot of variation. It doesn’t matter what build you choose you will need gold to buy gear. A mage is very dependent on the equipment to add to his survivability and DPS.

MMA Flashback: Kimbo Slice And Elite XC Debut On CBS

by Ross Everett

It wasnt the decisive blowout that EliteXC was hoping far to send Kimbo Slices stardom into the stratosphere but with some seriously tense moments for the former street fighter against a game James Thompson everyone concerned is likely happy with a victory of any sort. Kimbo at times displayed some surprising skill on the ground, while at other times looked amateurish and lost.

Though The Colossus kept his feet through several punishing combinations, but the beginning of the end came when a Slice punch nearly sheared his ear off. The bloody, grotesque ear was clearly at risk of being seriously damaged and Kimbo punctuated this with four or five uncontested power punches. Thompson by this point was out on his feet and the ref jumped in to bring the proceedings to a halt giving Kimbo a TKO victory. After the fight an exhausted and relieved Slice flopped onto the mat, clearly relieved to have survived the toughest test hes faced in his embryonic MMA career.

While Thompson and his corner complained of an early stoppage, given the severity of the ear injury and the four or five uncontested power shots by Kimbo its a tough case to make. Furthermore, it was consistent with the officiating all night which obviously was trying to err on the side of caution in the first MMA event on prime time major network television. The ref was quick to call several of the earlier bouts, and the ringside physician was involved. The fights on the card that ended by stoppage could have arguably been called a second or two early, but as the old saying goes better a second too early than a second too late.

Despite the tough test faced by Kimbo Slice and a disappointing no-contest in the semifinal bout between Robbie Lawler and tough Scott Smith, EliteXC overall has to be very happy with how the event came off. The presentation was highly professional all night, and the announcing was superb. There was no question that Gus Johnson and Mauro Ranallo are solid pros, and Frank Shamrock is obviously a well spoken and experienced expert commentator but the three meshed together exceptionally well.

The emphasis from the start was on selling the sport of MMA. This was done via nicely produced and informative instructional videos, which would be helpful to a first time MMA viewer but didnt come off as sophomoric to the seasoned aficionado. Given the often unpredictable nature of the sport, EliteXC has to be pleased with how everything came off and the results of the fights on the card.

Overall, it was a professionally produced and entertaining night of action. With the exception of the less than decisive victory by Kimbo in the main event, it couldnt have gone better for EliteXC had it been scripted. The end result is that both of their marquee names among the general public”Slice and Carano”remained undefeated.

What’s The Difference Between Airsoft Guns And BB Guns?

by Anthony Carter

Hobby gun enthusiasts are wild about airsoft guns. These strictly recreational guns look like real firearms, from hand guns to semi-automatic rifles. They are sold only to people 18 years of age and older who want realistic firearms to play a variety of games, just for the fun of it. Some don’t even play with their guns – they’re serious collectors who are simply fascinated by firearms.

Airsoft hand guns, rifles and semi-automatic weapons are so life-like that people who don’t understand their use confuse them with the more dangerous BB gun. There are quite a few similarities between the two, however there are profound differences between airsoft guns and BB guns, too. Here’s an abbreviated breakdown of the two types of life-like guns.

Firstly, airsoft guns are a relatively new type of gun having been developed just 30 years ago in Japan. Guns were not allowed in that country, despite the demand. So manufacturers developed a spring-firing type weapon, which evolved into a gas firing device. By the time these realistic guns, used strictly for recreational purposes, arrived in North America about 15 years go, an electric-firing model had been developed. These are also referred to as AEGs.

BB guns, on the other hand, have been in use for more than a century. Initially developed and used in Europe, BB guns became popular as a promotional product for the comic Red Ryder in the 1940s. With more power and greater range, BB guns are used for target practice or for killing small animals such as rodents and pesky birds.

BB guns shoot round metal balls, or BBs or other types of small, metal pellets. Airsoft guns, on the other hand, shoot only plastic pellets, typically 6mm in size and larger than BBs. Since BB guns fire with significantly more power, they are more dangerous and can cause bodily harm. They fire at 91 to 152. 4 meters per second, compared with airsoft firing power of just 55 to 91 meters per second. That’s not enough to cause serious harm to someone.

Similarities of the two guns include the firing mechanisms. Airsoft guns use either compressed gas, electricity or are powered by springs. BB guns are almost exclusively air or gas powered. Real guns use neither of these systems.

Airsoft weaponry and BB guns are deliberately manufactured to resemble the look of real guns and to feel like a real weapon when grasped. An unsuspecting person could easily mistake a BB gun or an airsoft gun for a lethal weapon. Fortunately, by law, an airsoft gun must be sold with a bright orange blaze at the end of the barrel to help identify it. This bright orange identifier is mandatory. Real guns do not have a neon orange tip.

As a closing note, airsoft guns are not the same as their messy cousin: paintball guns. Frequently, a paintball facility will offer airsoft as an alternate activity but the two guns are very different. Paintball guns don’t look like real weapons. They are very simple in design, with a canister filled with gas or air mounted on top of the gun. A paintball gun shoots paintballs, which are larger than airsoft pellets and full of paint that explodes on impact. If fired at close range, a victim of a paintball shot may experience pain and bruising. These types of guns are rarely confused with authentic guns.
