The I-Pod Revolution

by Cauldwell Pipps

Over the last few years the way music is delivered and listened to has changed immeasurably. Old walkmans and mini disc players have all been made obsolete by the wonderfully simple i-Pod.

Although the Ipod is available in several different models, from the Ipod Nano through to the 120 Gb Classic and the Ipod Touch which is great for also browsing the Internet and watching video, they all share the same basic simplicity of use that has made them firm favourites all across the world.

Organising your music has never been simpler, uploading it to your Ipod is a breeze and the players themselves are so intuitive that operating them is child’s play. The Ipod is here to stay, and doesn’t look like being equalled or surpassed at any time in the near future. The traditional portable music giants Sony have so far failed to make a product to rival the Ipod, and it seems like all other devices are cumbersome to use by comparison.

The ability to watch a feature film on your Ipod on a flight would have been the stuff of science fiction only a few years ago. Today you can easily download your favourite programs, films etc and watch them on the move. What is truly amazing is the mighty battery life that is the norm for Ipods, 14+ hours play back time is normal, so you will never run out of juice.

The size options of Ipods available mean that you can have an Ipod shuffle or Nano to carry with you if you are training or at the gym. Moving up the range you can have a 120 Gb Classic which will store 40,000 songs. The Ipod Touch, is great for Gaming, wireless internet connection, watching video etc, available in 16 Gb or 32 Gb. The Iphone is an 8 Gb phone which is a class leader in performance as well as function and design.

Available in a variety of colours, there is an Ipod to suit everyone, and when connected to a suitable base station you can play your music out load where ever you are. Your music collection can now be carried with you wherever you go, whilst also keeping a back up on your pc safe at home. This gives people freedom like they never had before.

Is The Great Wall Of China Visible From Space?

by James Ashe

Even the game, Trivial Pursuit claims that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible by NASA astronauts from space or from the moon with the naked eye. It’s a space urban legend. While many man-made objects are visible, the Great Wall of China generally isn’t, at least to the unaided eye in low Earth orbit. It certainly isn’t visible from the Moon.

The visible wall theory was tarnished in 2004 with the launch of Chinese Cosmonaut, Yang Liwei. According to the Associated Press, “For decades, the Chinese propagated the myth that their most famous creation was visible from space. Elementary-school textbooks in the world’s most populous nation still proclaim that the structure can be seen by the naked eye of an orbiting cosmonaut.” Yang Liwei, said he couldnt see the historic structure. There was even talk about rewriting textbooks that espouse the theory, a formidable task in the Earths most populous nation.

The idea popped up again when astronaut Leroy Chiao pointed his camera at the Earth from International Space Station. Images taken of Inner Mongolia about 200 miles north of Beijing were determined to show small sections of the wall.

The photos, taken with a digital camera and a 180mm lens, and later with a 400mm lens, were greeted with relief and rejoicing by the Chinese. Chiao himself said he didn’t see the wall, and wasn’t sure if the picture showed it.

From a low orbit of the earth, many artificial objects are visible on the earth, such as highways, ships in the sea, railroads, cities, fields of crops, and even some individual buildings. While at a low orbit, the Great Wall of China can certainly be seen from space but it is not unique in that regard.

However, when leaving the earth’s orbit and acquiring an altitude of more than a few thousand miles, no man-made objects are visible at all. NASA says, “The Great Wall can barely be seen from the Shuttle, so it would not be possible to see it from the Moon with the naked eye.” Thus, it’d be tough to spot the Great Wall of China or any other object from the moon. Furthermore, from the moon, even the continents are barely visible.

Regarding the origination of the story The Straight Dope’s pundit Cecil Adams says, “Nobody knows exactly where the story got started, although some think it was speculation by some bigshot during an after-dinner speech in the early days of the space program.”

NASA astronaut Alan Bean is quoted in Tom Burnam’s book More Misinformation…

“The only thing you can see from the moon is a beautiful sphere, mostly white (clouds), some blue (ocean), patches of yellow (deserts), and every once in a while some green vegetation. No man-made object is visible on this scale. In fact, when first leaving earth’s orbit and only a few thousand miles away, no man-made object is visible at that point either.

MMA Flashback: Strikeforce Shines At The Playboy Mansion

by Ross Everett

Hugh Hefner is really starting to show his age, but there he was at cageside wearing his trademark pajamas and bathrobe. Had he bothered to look up every now and then he would have enjoyed a spirited night of fighting that may have been short on significant matchups but wasnt lacking for entertainment value.

STRIKEFORCE had to scramble on this show, as injuries changed the main event several times. It was initially a non-title matchup between former UFC bad boy Renato Babalu Sobral and promotion light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth. He was replaced by Trevor Prangley, who has been with a number of organizations and was formerly the middleweight champion of the ill fated BoDog Fight promotion.

The Prangley/Ruiz contest was a one sided affair, with the South African using his strength to repeatedly takedown his opponent and control him on the ground. Ruiz had the edge in the standup game, but Prangley avoided trouble by keeping the fight where he wanted it en route to a unanimous decision victory. With the frequent changes this bout was moved well down on the card and aired third on the televised portion of the event.

The main event was nominally the US debut of World Victory Roads Kazuo Misaki aka The Grabaka Hitman taking on well traveled veteran Joe Riggs. After an uneventful first round, the second round brought fireworks. Riggs struck first, flooring Misaski early in the round with a short left hook. It was what could most properly be called a flash knockdown that in no way hurt the Japanese fighter. In fact, he basically somersaulted back to a standing position and responded in kind with a straight right hand that sent Riggs to the canvas. Josh Rosenthal quickly waved off the fight awarding Misaki the TKO victory.

After the stoppage, Riggs immediately jumped to his feet in protest. The crux of his argument was that he was defending himself and that Misakis blows were doing little damage. He did have something of a case, as the replay showed that he was covered up and absorbing most of the blows to his gloves. Still, the referee is within his authority to step in and stop the proceedings if a fighter is not intelligently defending himself. While Riggs may not have been taking the full brunt of Misakis strikes, he was basically covered up in survival mode and not doing anything to improve his position. With the safety of the fighters always the top priority, our conclusion was that the stoppage was legit. At the same time, however, you certainly cant blame Riggs for not being happy with it.

Earlier in evening, STRIKEFORCE lightweight champion Josh Punk Thompson made short work of a game but overmatched opponent in Ashe Bowman. To his credit, Bowman figured that he had to take the fight to the champion and went on the attack. Thompson then put on a counterpunching clinic nailing Bowman with a straight right followed by a flurry of uncontested punches that sent the young fighter to the canvas for a quick stoppage.

The most impressive submission of the night was courtesy of PRIDE vet Mitsuhiro The Endless Fighter Ishida. Justin Wilcox was the unlucky recipient on a beautiful submission when he attempted to take Ishida down and almost too fast to see the Japanese fighter slapped on an armbar for the quick tapout. The KO of the night had to go to Terry Martin, who appeared to be on his way to a unanimous decision loss to Cory Devela until the third round when he knocked out his opponent with a sneaky straight left.

Boston Bruins’ Scoring Legend Phil Esposito

by Ross Everett

Although many of his offensive records have now been left in the dust by Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, former Boston Bruins/New York Rangers center Phil Esposito is still regarded by hockey experts as one of the greatest players in NHL history. He’s forever enshrined in hockey’s hall of fame along with brother, goaltender Tony Esposito.

Esposito was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and his prodigious hockey talent quickly became apparent. He was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks as a teenager, and made his NHL debut in 1964. In 1967, Esposito was traded to the Boston Bruins along with Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield. Within a few years Hodge and Stanfield blossomed into All Stars, while Esposito quickly took his place alongside his former teammate Hull as the best scorer in the league.

It wasnt long before Esposito started to destroy long standing NHL records. In 1969, he became the first NHL player to top the 100 point mark (combined goals and assists) for the season”he obliterated the record with 126 points, which would be the first of six times that hed top the century mark. He topped 100 points in five straight seasons between 1971 and 1975, missing a sixth straight season by a single point with 99 in 1970. Bruins fans were fond of displaying car bumper stickers that read Jesus Saves; Esposito scores on the rebound.

In the 1970-71 season, Esposito smashed the NHL record for most goals in a season with 76. That record stood for over a decade until Wayne Gretzky scored 79 for the Edmonton Oilers in 1981-82. Gretzky also broke Espositos single season points record of 154. Even now, only four other players including Gretzky have scored more than 150 points in a season and only five others have scored more than 76 goals in a season. Perhaps the most amazing element of Espositos game was the frequency with which he put the puck on net”Espo had 550 shots on goal in 1970-71. No one has since come close”in fact, just last Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals became the first player to come within 100 shots of Espositos mark.

In 1975, Esposito was traded with Brad Park to the New York Rangers for Brad Park, Joe Zanussi and Jean Ratelle. By that point, he had been slowed considerably by knee injuries but his experience, intelligence for the game and nose for the puck made him a valuable component of the Broadway Blueshirts offense and he was named team captain. Until the very end of his career, he remained a dangerous scoring threat that all opposing teams were forced to reckon with.

After his retirement in 1975, he remained active in hockey. He served as the GM of the Rangers before helping secure an expansion team for Tampa, Florida in 1992. Esposito served as the President and GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning until 1998. Esposito now hosts a daily hockey radio show on XM Radio, and has even done some acting appearing in a recurring role as a fire chief on the TV series Rescue Me.

The Foxtrot: A Dance History

by Melanie LaPatin

In the world of ballroom dancing, there is no dance more classically American than the Foxtrot. While ballroom dancing in general originated in Europe, the Foxtrot began as part a unique vaudeville act. Although it is generally considered “the most popular social dance,” in fact, it wasnt originally a partner dance at all! We owe the Foxtrot to its creator, an American entertainer named Harry Fox. Harry (whose real name was Arthur Carringford) didnt exactly have an ideal childhood. He was out on his own by the age of 15. He began his entertainment career in a short run with the circus and was briefly a professional baseball player. He got into vaudeville when a music publisher liked the way he sang and he performed in theatre in San Francisco.

After the big earthquake in San Fran, however (and the fire of 1906), Harry decided to head for firmer ground on the opposite coast. Ending up in New York, Harry Fox made quite a name for himself performing in various vaudeville shows. In April, he started working with the Dolly Sisters, a gorgeous pair of blonde Hungarian twin dancers. There was even a movie about them starring Betty Grable and June Haver. Such an act had to get noticed, and it did.

In the summer on 1914, one of the largest live theatres in the world, the New York Theatre, was converted into a movie house. Perhaps to hedge his bets on whether the newfangled movie industry would actually turn a profit, the owner decided to add popular live entertainment into the mix. The roof was turned into a dance floor and vaudeville acts performed in the theatre between movie showings. Harry Fox and his American Beauties were hired as a dancing act. The booking made headline news, with Variety Magazine announcing, Harry Fox will appear for a month or longer at a large salary with billing that will occupy the front of the theatre in electrics. Opening night brought this review from Variety, The debut of Harry Fox as a lone star and act amidst the films of the daily change at the New York Theatre started off with every mark of success. The Dolly Sisters are dancing nightly on the New York Roof. ”

While the beauties were dancing on the roof, Harry was knocking them dead in the theatre with a little dance of his own, trotting around the floor to ragtime music. The audience called this Fox’s Trot and soon, everyone was doing the Foxtrot. Competitions sprang up and professional dancers copied the style. When American dancer G.K. Anderson travelled to London and partnered with Josephine Bradley in dance competitions, they not only won the trophies but the hearts of all England as well. The Foxtrot took Times Square by storm.

Its not hard to understand why the Foxtrot caught on. As one of the most versatile dances, you can dance to almost any kind of music, from slow ballads to quick ragtime. You can dance the Travelling Foxtrot around the floor or remain on the spot, allowing dancers to use as much ” or as little ” floor space as is available. It fits in as well with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett songs as it does with country music or even a tango. The Country Two-step is in fact a variation on the Foxtrot. So the next time you feel like dancing, hats off to Harry!
