The rivalry between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens is the oldest and most bitter rivalry in the history of the National Hockey League, which has led to these teams being each other’s arch-rivals. From 1944 to 1978, the two teams met each other in the playoffs 12 times, and faced off in five Stanley Cup Finals. While the on-ice competition is fierce, the Leafs-Habs rivalry is actually symbolic of a much deeper cleavage in Canadian history and society ” that between English and French-Canadians. It’s the rivalry between Canada’s largest cities: Toronto, the largest and the heart of Anglo-Canada and Montreal, the second-largest and the heart of Franco-Canada.

As early back as 92 years ago, this rivalry was laying out the groundwork for a bigger one to come. All of Toronto’s fans were generally English speakers, as the fans in Montreal were of French origins. The Maple Leafs logo resembled the Canadian army logo.

In Montreal, the Canadiens were built around a French fan base, as the province of Quebec had its origins with the French republic. In fact, the Canadiens chose to sing “O Canada” before each game, and most of the song was recited in French over English.

While certainly heated during the 1940s and 1950s, the Leafs-Habs rivalry was particularly acute during the 1960s; one of the two teams would capture the Stanley Cup each year in the decade, with the exceptions of 1961 and 1970. The rivalry perhaps reached its zenith in the 1967 season, when both teams met in the Stanley Cup Finals during the centennial year of Canadian Confederation. The city of Montreal was hosting Expo 67 that year, and the Canadiens were expected to beat the Leafs quite handily. Still, underdog Toronto upset the Habs to capture the Cup. Toronto captured their last cup to date in a 4-2 series win over the Canadiens.

Everything seemed to change after the 1967 season. Since this season, Montreal has won 10 more Stanley Cups, and the Maple Leafs have won none. In fact, they haven’t even made it to the final series since 1967. Their closest campaign was the 1993 season, but they were stopped short by the Kings in the conference finals.

In 1998, the Leafs moved into the Eastern Conference’s North East division, along with the Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, and Boston Bruins. This has served to rekindle the rivalry somewhat, although the two teams have yet to appear in a playoff series against each other. And probably never will in my lifetime.

In 2007, right before the start of the playoffs, the Leafs and Canadiens had a game that would decide which team would proceed to the playoffs. The Leafs won, but ultimately did not proceed to playoffs when the New York Islanders stole their spot. The 2009/10 season is coming, and the rivalry continues with Toronto and Montreal facing each other in the opening game of the season. As well as the last game of the season they face off again.

The 2009-2010 season may spark the rivalry between the two once again. With some built up talent on both squads, both Toronto and Montreal are looking to contend more seriously this coming season. Wouldn’t it be great to see it happen?

If you enjoy photography but are new at it then the best way to become good at it is by gathering as much information and tips as you can, then applying what you learn. Like most other things, practice makes perfect. Digital photography is wonderful but in some cases, it makes us a bit lazy. Meaning that we may not put as much emphasis on taking a good picture because we know we have editing tools to enhance it. If one is serious about photography though they should consider putting a good effort into the shot, and taking a good picture and making it better with editing techniques.

To begin with, almost everyone knows that you have to have a steady hand to get that great shot. Unfortunately, not too many of us have that ability to hold the camera perfectly still. This is where a tripod or beanbag is necessary. Many people hate the thought of carting a tripod everywhere they go on their photography shoot. To make this a little easier take a picture without the tripod then take the same picture again. You will be convinced at the need for one.

It is wonderful when you have several hours ahead of you where you have nothing to do but take pictures. You gather all your equipment and arrive at the perfect location. You begin by taking a series of pictures, and then something seems to be wrong. You discover your memory card is full and you do not have your laptop with you to download. Do yourself a favor get at least one high capacity memory card.

Give some thought to using a UV filter. They are very inexpensive but they sure can be worth their weight in gold when it comes to protecting the expensive stuff. The filter fits on your camera lens and acts as protector from scratches and dust. This includes keeping the fingerprints at bay as well. Do not be afraid to be carried away. Keep shooting that same shot several times. You are bound to get a couple of good quality pictures to work with from doing it this way. A fraction of a second can make all the difference in a picture.

In the’60′s, the NHL was almost entirely made up of Canadian born players. There were a few US natives, but players from other countries were unheard of. Stan Mikita, born the country formerly known as Czechoslovakia, started to change that. While he was sometimes overshadowed by teammates like Bobby Hull, most hockey experts consider Mikita the best NHL center of the’60′s. He was born in what is now Slovakia, and sent to live in Canada as a young boy. Like most boys his age, he began playing the national sport of hockey.

Mikita starred for the junior league St. Catherine Teepees as a teenager before making the jump to the NHL joining the Chicago Blackhawks. He quickly became an important part of the Chicago offense in his first and second full seasons as a pro. In’61, he led the team in playoff scoring as they won the Stanley Cup.

During the early and mid’60′s, Mikita centered the Scooter Line with Ken Wharram on the right wing and Ab McDonald or Doug Mohns on the left wing, and earned a reputation as one of the most complete offensive players in the game. Bobby Hull may have been a bigger superstar among mainstream fans, but most hockey experts realized that Mikita was the team’s true offensive catalyst.

Mikita wasn’t a one way player by any means–he was a tenacious defender and one of the best faceoff men in the sport. He’s also responsible for introducing the curved stick blade to the NHL. It was a radical innovation at the time, but now players who *don’t* play with a curved blade are a rarity.

When he first came to the NHL, Mikita was a tough, hard hitting player who spent a considerable amount of time in the penalty box. That changed in the mid’60′s when he became a very sportsmanlike player almost overnight. This cleaner style of play would earn him the Lady Byng Trophy for most gentlemanly player twice. The story goes that he had a change of heart when his young daughter asked why he spent so much time sitting in the box on televised games.

In addition to his Stanley Cup victory, Mikitas career accomplishments are among the most impressive in NHL history. He won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHLs leading scorer four times (1964,’65,’67,’68), the Hart Memorial Trophy for Most Valuable Player twice (1967 and’68) and the Lady Byng Trophy in’67 and’68.

Mikita suffered from chronic back ailments later in his career, and finally retired in’80 having played his entire career for the Chicago Blackhawks. He was voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility (1983) and became enshrined in pop culture history a few years later thanks to the movie ‘Wayne’s World’. In the movie, protagonists Wayne and Garth frequently hang out at a donut shop based on the Canadian Tim Hortons chain. The name of the shop is Stan Mikitas Donuts.
