What You Need To Know About Airsoft Guns
Airsoft guns are extremely realistic replicas of conventional firearms which many people are increasingly using for recreational purposes. Working in much the same way as paintball guns, they have been used by military, federal and state police departments in training exercises, due to the very real nature, weight and detailing of the product.
Designs vary, though all remain very close to the originals they aim to replicate. The obvious difference is in the mechanisms used to fire them; with range from springs, compressed gases, (such as propane and CO2), and spring loadings. Whilst many can be operated manually, automatically charged weapons are the product of choice.
Whilst the lower end velocity, (at about thirty meters per second), are not likely to cause much harm, the plasticized six millimeter pellets can be fired at double the speed.
Because of this, airsoft guns can be potentially lethal, and despite much public opinion, should not be considered of toys suitable for minors.
This is again true due to the very realistic detailing of the weapons. Possessions of the weapons are not controlled under federal law, but their discharge most certainly is. Discharging them within city limits is a felony, though outside of city limits ordinance controls do not apply.
The main issue with the guns surrounds the realism and, although manufactured with a clear bright orange or yellow tip, (which is strictly controlled by federal law), many owners modify their weapons to make them appear realistic.
It is with such modifications that the problems arise however and, in some cases, has lead to lethal consequences. Both the law enforcement agencies and, more importantly in many respects, the public at large are forced into a situation where they see an airsoft weapon and deem it to be real.
Whilst removing the safety devices is to be discouraged, there are many other tips to ensure responsible use is guaranteed.
No matter what the joke maybe, it is imperative that you never point your weapon at someone who is not fully aware of what is going on. As already discussed, these weapons are extremely well detailed representations of their real counterparts. As a minimum it will cause panic, and could lead to a long jail sentence for you; or worse.
This is certainly true in those states where it is a felony centering on the “victim’s” perception of the weapon and its potential to cause harm; no matter the truth of the weapon’s nature.
Indeed, pointing the weapon at someone who is completely aware of what it is should also be tightly controlled, and only then when they are wearing protective equipment.
Finally, airsoft guns should really only be transported when you are travelling to use them and, should most certainly not be taken out in public areas. Applying common sense will hopefully ensure you enjoy your weapon responsibly however, if you are ever confronted by enforcement agencies, discard it immediately. Differences can be resolved, mistakes often can’t.
